The glaring image that strikes you at any of the nomadic settlement is the sheer amount of children, children just loitering around out of school, out of any day-care center with nowhere to go except helping parents with earning living or attending chores.  It is heart wrenching to see such a waste of childhood. Initially, the problems we starred at were plenty but  one of the first interventions by VSSM for the nomadic communities was to ensure children start attaining education but how to make that happen was another issue. Educational deprivation was one of the core reasons for such marginalisation of these communities. We began with efforts to blend these children in the mainstream with enrolling them in the village government schools or Ashram Shalas. But numerous reasons resulted into the children coming back from Ashram Shalas or being pushed out of the schools. Hence VSSM launched its program of Bridge Schools,  meaning VSSM operated schools in the settlements which subsequently created a need to start a hostel. As the children began to understand what it is to go school, what difference it has brought to their lives; more number of children began coming to school and hostels. The children who had potential but resisted coming to school had to be  cajoled or coaxed and brought to school while  sometimes if the need  emerged  we were also  required to scold the parents to let the children remain in school. All these efforts of past few years have paid off as now there is so much demand for hostels that we have run out of space. That is the reason why we are moving children from two of our hostels to one facility in Ahmedabad. 

The Sadvichar Parivar Trust has offered VSSM one of its campus in Naroda, Ahmedabad. 180 children from Doliya hostel and 35 children from Radhanpur hostel will move into this facility from June this year. Arrangements have been made to accommodate 300 children in this hostel. The Baldosts are busy preparing a list of children interested in joining the Naroda Hostel. We hadn’t imagined in the wildest of our dreams that the figure of children willing to join the Naroda Hostel will  600. 

IN the meantime efforts are on prepare the children to appear for a school entrance test. The N. V School in Naroda has agreed to enrol these children provided they clear the entrance test. We had identified and called almost 200 children instead 300 turned up and appeared for the entrance examination held on 29th April. 94 of these children have cleared the test and secured admission in N. V. School. 

To our utter astonishment 30 children had come from Vadiya to appear for this test.  We knew the change was imminent but weren’t expecting it to be  so soon!!  The events that have unfolded during past couple of weeks  are extremely  surreal  and we can’t help but thank the Almighty for the same. 

It is equally important that we take this opportunity  to express  a big thank you to Dimpleben for her rock solid support and untiring efforts to ensure that maximum number of children benefit from Naroda Hostel. It is her efforts that have relieved us from lot of worries and anxieties…..Thank you Dimpleben and all the Baldosts of VSSM…..

વિચરતી જાતિઓ સાથે કામ શરૃ કર્યું તે વખતે પ્રશ્નોની વણઝાર સામે હતી. ઉકેલો પણ નહોતા સૂઝતા. કેટલું થશે? શું કરી શકાશે? વગેરે કશો જ ખ્યાલ નહોતો. વસાહતોમાં રઝળપાટ દરમ્યાન ભૂખ્યા અને શિક્ષણથી વંચિત બાળકોને જોઈને જીવ બળી ગયો હતો. જે પીડા આ સમુહ વેઠી રહ્યો હતો એના કારણોમાં અશિક્ષિત હોવાનું પણ જવાબદાર લાગેલું. એટલે પ્રથમ ઉકેલના રૃપે બાળકોને જુદી જુદી સરકારી આશ્રમશાળામાં દાખલ કરાવ્યા પણ તેમાં આ બાળકોને સુખ ના આવ્યું. ખુબ મૂંઝવણો વચ્ચે તેમની વસાહતોમાં તંબુશાળા અને એમાંથી 7 બાળકોને લઈને હોસ્ટેલ શરૃ કરી. અમે જેમના બાળકો ભણે એમ ઈચ્છતા એવી વસાહતોમાંથી તો બાળકોને ઉપાડીને લઈ આવતા. મા-બાપને પ્રેમથી ઘમકાવતા પણ ખરા. પણ ઘીમે ઘીમે અમે જે ઈચ્છતા હતા તે બદલાવ દેખાઈ રહ્યો હતો.

ડોળિયાગામમાં vssm સંચાલીત હોસ્ટેલમાં 180 બાળકો ભણતા જ્યારે રાધનપુરમાં 35 બાળકો. આ બંને હોસ્ટેલ જુન 2016થી અમે અમદાવાદમાં શીફ્ટ કરવાનું આયોજન કર્યું. નરોડા ખાતે આવેલા સદવિચાર પરિવારના કેમ્પસમાં 300 બાળકો રહી શકે તેવી વ્યવસ્થા ગોઠવી. સંસ્થાના કાર્યકરો હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા આવવા ઈચ્છતા વિદ્યાર્થીઓની યાદી તૈયાર કરીને મોકલાવી રહ્યા હતા. મને ક્યારેય ભરોષો નહોતો કે આ યાદી 600ના આંકડાને ક્રોસ કરશે. હા 600 ઉપરાંત બાળકોના મા-બાપે પોતાના બાળકોને હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા મૂકવાની તૈયારી દર્શાવી અને પ્રવેશ આપજો જ તેવી વિનંતી પણ કરી.

નરોડાના એન.વી. વિદ્યાલયે બાળકોની પરિક્ષા લઈને પ્રવેશ આપવાનું નક્કી થયું હતું અમે 200 જેટલા બાળકોને બોલાવ્યા હતા. તા.29મીએ આયોજીત પ્રવેશ પરિક્ષામાં 300 ઉપરાંત બાળકો પ્રવેશ પરિક્ષા માટે આવ્યા જેમાંથી 94ને એન.વી.માં પ્રવેશ મળી ગયો. 

બદલાવ શરૃ થઈ ગયો છે.. જો કે આટલો જલદી બદલાવ આવશે તેની મને કલ્પના પણ નહોતી. વાડિયામાંથી પણ 30 બાળકો પ્રવેશ માટે આવ્યા હતા. નવાઈ લાગે તેવું અને માની ના શકાય તેવું છે પણ આનંદો આનંદો.... ભગવાન thank you..

Education as a need is yet to be established for the nomadic families. These wanderers have never felt the necessity of sending their children to school nor have they missed not going to school. Given the current scenario of their livelihoods the need to be educated is more than ever. In absence of alternate occupations most of the nomadic families are taking up begging as a profession. The children from very young age are taken along by parents beg. They are seen as earning members of the family. If we reason why weren’t they willing to send children to school they would reply, “ what will he do after going to school, who’s  going to give him a job, ultimately he will have to beg for living!!??

As the monsoon comes to an end the Nath Vadee community descend over the villages. The collect grains from the freshly harvested crop. The grains are enough to last them a year. The women adorn black clothes, carry a plate with an idol of their deity on a it they move shop to shop, villages, towns and cities showering blessing and asking for money in return.

In the year 2006 we first come into contact with these community, understood their social and cultural environment. In 2007 we opened a Balghar in the settlement igniting a lamp of learning. The Nath Vadee Dangaa children held slate and pen in their hands instead of begging bowl. The began scribbling alphabets for the first time. Seeing their children learning brought smiles on the faces of the parents. 

If the Nath Vadee children came across Shardaben in the bazaar with begging bowls in hands they would quickly hide it. If they were fighting the other would hush them so that Shardaben wouldn’t know…. there were gradual but consistent changes in the attitude, behaviour and  personality of these children after they began attending the Balghar. The children also received health and wholesome food like Moong, Chana, Poha, Dhokli, Halwa etc at the Balghar. But what they preferred was the meal they were used to,  their humble rotla and onion...

The Nath Vadee children- from begging with parents to studying at the Balghar and continue learning beyond the Balghar. From 2007 to 2015 it has been a long journey, creating an environment of learning amongst one of the most rigid and orthodox nomadic communities the Nath Vadee. Today 20 of these children are in 9th standard and 15 children in 10 standard. An extremely encouraging outcome for us. The numbers here could have been more was it no for an age old traditional practice this community follows. At the age of 14 the male child in the community is engaged and has to go and leave at his in-laws house. Here he is responsible for everything … its the practice of ‘gharjamai’ ……more about this later…

Mahesh Nainnath, Mukesh Keshnath and Haresh Keshnath are extremely bright students. These kids have asked their parents to enrol them in a private school and get private tuitions because the government school isn’t good enough. Private school and private tuitions are an expensive affair but parents have decided to go ahead and  enrol the kids in private schools and private tuitions. The fees comes to around  Rs. 20,000 per child. The parents decided to take an interest free loan from VSSM and enrolled the children in N. H Vidhyamandir in Tharad. The boys are doing well in the school. 

Its hard to believe but this is a full circle moment for us. There was a time when we imposed our selves upon the parents and fought  with them  to send their children to school, now its  the concerned parents taking loan from us to educate their children. 

These children want to be Collector, Doctor when they grow up…… “So why do you want to be a Collector?” we asked… “We will use our position for the overall development of the nomadic communities!!” they replied…it was an reply reflecting the pains associated with their wandering lifestyles.

ભિક્ષાવૃતિ પર નભનાર નાથાવાદી પરિવારોએ બાળકોને ભણાવવા vssmમાંથી લોન લીધી

ભણતર અને વિચરતા સમુદાયને બાર ગાઉંનું છેટું. બાળક જન્મે કે માં પીઠે ખોળિયું બાંધીને ભિક્ષા માંગવા જાય. બાળક ચાલતા શીખે કે એનેય હાથમાં વાટકો આપી સાથે લઈ જાય. કોઈક પૂછે તો કહે અમારો નોબરો (છોકરો) ભણીને શું કરશે ? એને નોકરી કોણ આપવાનું ? આખરે તો ભીક્ષાજ માંગવાની ને ...

ચોમાસું ઊતરે કે નાથવાદીઓ ગામેગામ ફરી વળે. લણણી થયા પછી સમૂહમાં આખાય ગામની શેરી શેરીએ ફરી વળે. આ દિવસોમાં સારી ભિક્ષા મળે. રિઝર્વ ક્વોટા તરીકે ચાલે એટલી... સ્ત્રીઓ કાળા વસ્ત્રો ધારણ કરી થાળીમાં માતાજીની છબી રાખે. ગામમાં /નગરમાં દુકાને દુકાને ફરે. સૌને આશીર્વાદ આપે અને જે આવક થાય એનાથી પેટીયું રળે.

વર્ષ ૨૦૦૬માં VSSMનાં માધ્યમથી નાથવાદીઓને મળવાનું થયું. સમગ્ર વિગતો જાણી. ૨૦૦૭માં બાળઘર શરૂ કર્યું. નાથવાદીઓનાં ડંગામાં સ્લેટ પેન આવ્યા. ભણતરનાં કોડિયાનો અજવાશ પ્રગટ્યો. . લગભગ પચાસેક બાળકો બાળઘરમાં આવવા લાગ્યા. એંકડો ઘૂંટવાની શરૂઆત થઇ. બાળકોને ભણતા જોઈ માં-બાપ પણ હરખાતા, મલકાતાં.

ક્યારેક ગામની બજારમાં શારદાબહેન નીકળે કે નાથવાદી બાળકો ભિક્ષાનું પાત્ર વાટકો સંતાડી દે. આ બાળઘરનાં સંસ્કારનો પ્રભાવ હતો. ડંગામા ઝઘડતા હોય તો બૂમ પડે – “ નોબરી હે તો બોલવાનું બંધ કર. નહિ તો એમને ખબર પડી જશે.” બાલઘરમાં નિયમિત વિવિધ વાનગીઓ નાસ્તામાં મળે. મગ, ચણા, પૌઆ, ઢોકળી ક્યારેક શીરો... પણ સદીઓની રઝળપાટમાં આહારની ટેવોમાં “ બેન ટપી દો કોનદો તો પેટ ભરાય (રોટલો અને ડુંગળી)”

બાળઘરમાં ભણતા બાળકો પ્રાથમિક શાળામાં ગયા એક શરૂઆત... આજે નવમાં ધોરણમાં વીસ અને દશમાં ધોરણમાં પંદર નાથવાદી બાળકો અભ્યાસ કરી રહ્યા છે. આ ઓછી સંખ્યા પાછળ એક સામાજિક રીવાજ પણ જવાબદાર છે. છોકરો ૧૪ વર્ષનો થાય એટલે સગાઈ કરી દેવામાં આવે પછી એને સાસરિયે જવું પડે. સાસરિયે સંપૂર્ણ જવાબદારી જમાઈરાજાની. માથે બાંધેલો રૂમાલ અને લૂંગી (શરીરે વીંટાળેલુ કપડું એ જમાઈરાજા ની ઓળખાણ- નિશાની. આ પ્રથા એટલે ઘરજમાઈ. આ અંગે ફરી ક્યારેક વિગતે લખીશું.

શાળામાં ભણતા બાળકો પૈકી મહેશ નૈનનાથ, મુકેશ કેશનાથ અને હરેશ કેશનાથ તેજસ્વી બાળકો. સરકારી શાળામાં શિક્ષણ બરાબર નથી એટલે આ ત્રણેયના માં - બાપે બાળકોને  ખાનગી શાળામાં જે ખર્ચ થાય એ કરીને ભણાવવાનો તથા ટ્યુશન રખાવવાનો નિર્ણય કર્યો. રૂ.૨૦,૦૦૦ એક બાળકની ફી. પાસે આટલા બધા તો પૈસા હોય નહિ એમણે VSSM પાસેથી ત્રણે બાળકોની શાળાની ફી અને ટ્યુશન માટે બાળક દીઠ રૂપિયા વીસ હજાર લોન(વગર વ્યાજની) મેળવી થરાદનાં એન.એચ વિદ્યામંદિરમાં પ્રવેશ મેળવ્યો. બાળકો સરસ ભણી રહ્યા છે.

એક પણ બાળકને ભણાવવા વસાહતમાં કોઈ રાજી નહોતું ત્યાં પોતાના બાળકને સારું શિક્ષણ મળે એ માટે ભિક્ષાવૃતિ કરીને ખાનારા પરિવારો લોન લે! માનવામાં જ ન આવે! પણ પરિવર્તન દેખાવા માંડ્યું છે જેનો આનંદ છે.

આ બાળકોના સ્વપ્નો છે... કલેકટર બનવું છે, ડોક્ટર બનવું છે. “ કલેકટર બનીને શું કરશો ? “ એમનો પ્રત્યુતર એમની આજીવન રઝળપાટ નો જાણે પ્રતિધ્વની હોય- “ વિચરતા સમુદાયનાં સર્વાંગી ઉત્કર્ષ માટે અધિકારનો ઉપયોગ કરીશું.”

જે બાળકોના શિક્ષણ માટે લોન આપવામાં આવી છે એ જે સ્થિતિમાં રહે છે એ ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.. એક નવા પરોઢનાં ઉદયનાં સાક્ષી બનવાનો આનંદ છે.

Celebrating birthdays during seasons and festival the child was born and not 1st of June…..

Have you ever noticed that tens of thousand of children born in rural India celebrate their birthday on 1st June!! Surprised?? Well that is what the teachers and principals of the schools do to enrol children whose parents aren’t aware of the child’s date of birth. They write child’s date of birth 1st June.  This is a easy way out for the school authorities who otherwise struggle to find birthdates so as to match them with cut of age for first grade admissions that begin through out Gujarat from mid- June every year. 

So here we have two distinct sections - One where the parent know the date of birth, have registered the birth of their child and celebrate the birth dates with great pomp and show.  Than there is this another group where the parent is unaware of the exact date but remembers the time of the year/season the child was born or the Hindu calendar date but not the year of birth. The children from the nomadic communities belong to the later group. Born in the woods or  makeshift homes,  to the parents who constantly wander the nomadic children nevi have their births registered because the parents aren’t aware of the importance of getting the birth registered. In instances where the parents do go to get the birth registered the Panchyats refuse to register because they are unwilling to process rest of the citizenry documents for the family from the village. Earlier this was not a major issue but now since birth certificate has become mandatory, not registering births is a becoming an issue.

The child never gets to know her actual date of birth and continues to celebrate on 1st June. 60% of children studying with the Bridge Schools, Balghars and Hostels of VSSM celebrate their birth dates on 1st June. We make sure the children  get to celebrate their birthdates with fanfare and the way each child would like to. But since  the hostels and schools remained closed for vacation from April to 15th June the children with birthdates on 1st June were left out and those have it after 15th June for to enjoy their birthdates. The children did feel left out. So the Baldosts came up with a novel idea. They spoke to parents and found out the season or festival during which the child was born. Nor each child with VSSM gets to celebrate his/her birthday. We make sure it becomes a special day for them, they were new clothes, blessings are showered, beautiful birthday songs play in the background and they pledge to work hard for their better tomorrow. 

ઋતુચક્રને અનુલક્ષીને દિવસો નક્કી કર્યા અને જન્મ દિવસની ઊજવણી શરૂ કરી

એક બાજુ એવા પરિવારો છે કે જેમના કુટુંબમાં બાળકના જન્મનો અવસર ગામમાં મીઠાઈ વહેંચીને ઊજવાય છે. જન્મની તારીખ યાદ રાખીને તેની દર વર્ષે ઊજવણી થાય છે અને તેમાં બાળકની ઉતરોત્તર પ્રગતિના આશીર્વાદ અપાય છે. જયારે બીજી બાજુ સદીઓથી વિચરણ કરતા આ પરિવારમાં વનવગડામાં, ગામના પાધરે, એકાદ આડશ પાછળ તબીબ સહાય કે દાયણની મદદ વગર એક વધુ જીવનો ઉમેરો થાય છે. હરખ તો અહીંયા પણ છે પણ મીઠાઈ સ્વરૂપે હરખ વ્યક્ત કરવા પૈસા નથી હોતા. બાળકના જનમ્યાની તિથિ કે તારીખની ય ક્યાં ખબરે હોય. કેવણઋતુનું આછું સ્મરણ હોય. જે ગામમાં પડાવ હોય તે ગામની પંચાયતમાં જઇને તલાટી પાસે પોતાના વહાલસોયાની નોંધણી કરાવવાનીયે ખબર નાં હોય અને હોય તોયે કઈ પંચાયત નોંધણી કરે? કારણ નોંધણી થાય તો ગામમાં રહેતાં હોવાનો આધાર મળે એટલે જન્મતારીખ જ નાં હોય. પહેલાં તો ભણાવવાનીયે ક્યાં ચિંતા હતી પણ હવે બાળકોને ભણાવવા છે અને એટલે શાળામાં દાખલ કરે છે.

શાળામાં દાખલ થનાર આવા વનવગડામાં જન્મેલા જેટલા પણ બાળકો હોય તે તમામની જન્મતારીખ શાળાના માસ્તર સરકારી નિયમ મુજબ ૧ જાન્યુઆરી કે ૧ જુન લખી દે. સંસ્થા દ્વારા કાર્યરત હોસ્ટેલ અને બાલઘરમાં ભણતા ૬૦ ટકા ઉપરાંત બાળકોની જન્મતારીખ ઉપર જણાવ્યા પ્રમાણેની જ ૧ જુન... બાળક તો ખરાઈ કરતું નથી ૧ જુને સાચે જ એ જન્મ્યા છે એમ એ માને. હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા અમારા આ બાળકોના જન્મની અમે માનભેર ઉજવણી કરીએ. એ દિવસે બાળક માટે ખાસ દિવસ બની રહે તેની પૂરી કાળજી લઈએ. પણ અમે જેમના પણ જનમ દિવસે ઉજવીએ એ ૧૫ જુન પછી જન્મેલા બાળકો કેમ કે હોસ્ટેલનું વેકેશન ૧૫ જુન પછી ખુલે. એટલે મોટાભાગના કિસ્સામાં સાચી જનમતારીખ વાળા બાળકના જનમ દિવસની ઉજવણી થાય અને ૧ જુન વાળા રહી જાય. કશું કહે નહીં પણ એક મૂંઝવણ એમને થાય.... બાલદોસ્તોએ આ મૂંઝવણ જાણી અને વચગાળાના ઉપાય તરીકે તહેવાર, ઋતુચક્રને અનુલક્ષીને દિવસો નક્કી કર્યા અને જન્મ દિવસની ઉજવણી શરૂ કરી . જન્મદિવસની નવપલ્લવિત સવારે બધા બાળકો શુભેચ્છાઓની વર્ષા વરસાવે. બાળકને નવા વસ્ત્રો પહેરાવાય અને મધુર ગીતો વચ્ચે બાળક આવતી કાલનો સંકલ્પ લે.. ખૂબ ભણીશું.. આગળ વધીશું અને સૌના કલ્યાણમાં નિમિત્ત બનીશું...

In the very binging of our efforts to empower the nomadic communities of Gujarat, we had made recognised the fact that to bring these communities out of the perpetual  cycle of poverty and marginalisation we will have to sow the seeds of education amongst the current and future generations of these communities. VSSM made very conscious and  consistent efforts to bring these children within the folds of mainstream education . From Bridge schools to hostels to mainstreaming the children habituated to going to school and enrolling them in some prestigious residential schools of Gujarat we have done it all. Currently 665 children are directly associated with the 13 Bridge schools and 5 hostels run by VSSM.  This year we have embarked upon another initiative, starting a hostel for 30 girls within our office premises in Ahmedabad.

Recently on 30th June 2015, noted academician and author Shri. Bhadrayubhai Vacchrajani treated the girls with a dinner at ‘Karma Cafe’ on occasion of his marriage anniversary. The girls absolutely enjoyed their evening out, it was have been more fun had they got Dal and Rotla for dinner but this too was good…..

વિચરતી અને વિમુક્ત જાતિઓમાં શિક્ષણનું પ્રમાણ ખુબ ઓછું છે. vssm આ સમુદાયના બાળકો ભણતા થાય એ દિશામાં કામ કરે છે. જે અંતર્ગત ૧૩ તંબુશાળા અને પાંચ હોસ્ટેલ ચાલે છે. જેમાં ૬૬૫ બાળકો અભ્યાસ કરી રહ્યા છે. આ વર્ષે અમદાવાદમાં vssmના કેન્દ્રીય કાર્યાલય પર જ ૩૦ દીકરીઓ માટે હોસ્ટેલ વ્યવસ્થા ઉભી કરી છે.

આ દીકરીઓ માટે ૩૦ જુનના રોજ જાણીતા શિક્ષણવિદ અને લેખક શ્રી ભદ્રાયુભાઈ વછરાજાનીએ એમની એનીવર્સરી નિમિતે કર્મકાફે અમદાવાદમાં રાત્રી ભોજનની વ્યવસ્થા કરી.. દીકરીઓને ખુબ મજા પડી.. હા જમવામાં હજુ દાળ અને રોટલાની જ ટેવ હોવાના કારણે થોડી તકલીફ થઇ પણ પછી બધું ગોઠવાઈ ગયું.. ફોટોમાં દીકરીઓ કર્મકાફે..

VSSM operates a Balghar for the children of Nomadic Communities in the Vavdi village of Rajkot. The Baldost Kanubhai has done some beautiful work in education the children of this village. As space is a constraint the Balghar functioned from under a tree so come rains and how to function became an issue. The children got concerned thinking that if it rains Kanubhai wouldn’t come to teach them!!! In fact,  Kanubhai and the parents had been contemplating of moving the Balghar to some place else during the monsoons. 

Kanubhai was on leave for 20th and 21st June. He called up to inform the kids, “When will you come Saheb??” they inquired.

“Monday” replied Kanubhai.

VSSM run Balghar to function during monsoons

“Saheb, come on Tuesday, we want to show you something, don’t come before that,” ordered the kids…

When Kanubhai reached the village on Tuesday, what he saw took him by a complete surprise, “Ben, my children and their parents created a shade for me to run the school, they contributed money and decorated it with balloons, ribbons and confetti. They asked me to inaugurate the school, inspite of my refusing it they forced me. I wonder from where my kids learned all these!!” narrated a bewildered Kanubhai. 

Its just a shade but creating a venue so that their children can study is a huge leap forward for parents who until now never gave importance to the education of their children. We couldn’t be more happier, hope to have more such examples ….

vssm દ્વારા ચાલતા બાલઘરના બાળકોએ ભણવા માટે જાતે બેઠક વ્યવસ્થા ગોઠવી..

રાજકોટના વાવડી ગામમાં વિચરતી જાતિના બાળકોને ભણાવવાનું કામ vssm કરે છે. બાલદોસ્ત કનુભાઈએ શરૂઆતમાં આ બાળકોને ઝાડ નીચે બેસાડીને ભણાવ્યા. અત્યાર સુધી આ રીતે ભણવામાં વાંધો નહોતો પણ હવે ચોમાસું શરુ થયું. બાળકોને ચિંતા થઇ કે વરસાદ આવે એ દિવસે એમના સાહેબ કનુભાઈ એમને ભણાવવા નહી આવે કારણ ચાલુ વરસાદમાં બેસવાની વ્યવસ્થા નથી.. કનુભાઈ અને બાળકોના વાલીઓ પણ બાળકોને બેસવાની વ્યવસ્થા અંગે વિચારે. કનુભાઈ તા.૨૦-૨૧ જુનના રોજ બે દિવસ રજા ઉપર હતા. બાળકોએ એમને ફોનથી પૂછ્યું, ‘સાહેબ તમે ક્યારે આવશો’

‘સોમવારે’

‘સાહેબ મંગળવારે આવજો ને. અમારે તમને કંઇક બતાવવાનું છે. વહેલાં ના આવતાં’

કનુભાઈ ને કંઈ સમજાયું નહિ પણ બાળકોએ કહ્યું છે એટલે એમણે મંજૂર રાખ્યું અને મંગળવારે બપોરના બાળકોને ભણાવવાના રાબેતા મુજબના સમયે એ પહોચ્યાં. અને જે જોયું, એ અંગે એમના જ શબ્દોમાં, ‘બહેન મારા બાળકો અને અને વાલીઓએ મળીને સરસ બેઠક વ્યવસ્થા કરી છે. દરેક બાળકે રૂ.૧૦ -૧૦ મા- બાપ પાસેથી લઈને એમની આ નિશાળને ફુગ્ગા, રીબીન વગેરેથી શણગારી છે. અને મારા હાથે એમણે આ શાળાનું ઉદઘાટન પણ કરાવ્યું. મેં ઉદઘાટન માટે ના પડી તો એમણે કહ્યું, ના સાહેબ એ તમારે જ કરવાનું છે’ હું ખુબ રાજી છું બેન મારા બાળકો આ બધું ક્યાંથી શીખ્યા સમજાતું નથી પણ એમણે એમની રીતે બાલઘર બનાવ્યું, (વાલીઓના સહયોગથી) ઉદઘાટન કર્યું અને વાલીઓ પણ આમાં સહભાગી બન્યાં.’ વસાહતના લોકોએ પોતાના બાળકોને બેસવા માટે આમ તો એક છાપરું જ બનાવ્યું છે પણ એમની એમના બાળકોને ભણાવવાની ચિંતા જોઈ રાજી થવાય છે. બસ વિચરતી જાતિના તમામ બાળકો ભણતા થાય એ જ અપેક્ષા ...

Education for All - School Building at Dudhrej for
Nomadic Communities Children

There is a nomadic settlement  situated 2 kms away from the Dudhrej village of Surendranagar. The settlement consists of families from nomadic communities of Devipujak, Marwari Devipujak Community,Saraniyaa Community, Kangasiyaa Community etc. The settlement has substantial number of children of school going age. To access the nearest government school which is in Dudhrej village the kids have to  walk 2 kms. It is a substantial distance and  the parents  remain hesitant to enrol their kids in this school as Dhangadhara-Surendranagar Highway stands between the settlement and the school, the road accidents in the past have discouraged parents to send their children to school in Dudhrej.  As a remedial measure VSSM initiated a Bridge School in the settlement bringing education to their doorstep. VSSM’s Harshadbhai played a very important role in bringing these children to school and their eventual absorption in the mainstream education system. A system to ferry the children to and from the school was also worked out.  Simultaneously,  efforts to bring a government school to the settlement were also launched by Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch -VSSM and persistent efforts did result in sanctioning  of a school in the settlement. However, as it is in India approvals and implementation do not go together, the school never began. We were required to  relaunch our efforts towards getting the school started. This time it began in a makeshift rented structure which could hardly suffice for a proper school, hence the lobbying continued. Finally, the construction has began (as seen in the picture).

The parents who normally decide  to keep their mouth shut and never utter a word  before authorities and villagers spoke up in the School Management Committee ( SMC ) just for the benefit of  their children and succeeded in bringing a government school in their settlement and thus answering the never ending inquires of their kids, “when will we have school in our settlement??” 

VSSM’s Harshadbhai has been instrumental in persuading the parents to work towards the benefit of their children….. 

vssm અને વાલીઓની મહેનતથી ઘર આંગણે નિશાળ આવી..

સુરેન્દ્રનગરનાં દૂધરેજમાં મારવાડી દેવીપૂજક, સરાણીયા, દેવીપૂજક, કાંગસિયા વગેરે પરિવારો રહે. વસાહતથી ગામની શાળા બે કી.મી દૂર અને વળી પાછો વચમાં ધ્રાંગધ્રા-સુરેન્દ્રનગર હાઇવે આવે એટલે બાળકોને શાળામાં મૂકતા વાલીઓ ડરે. અકસ્માતના અનુભવો પણ કારણભૂત. બે વર્ષ સુધી આપણે આ વસાહતના બાળકો માટે બાલઘર ચલાવ્યું. (જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે) બાલદોસ્ત હર્ષદની ખૂબ મહેનતથી છોકરાઓ શાળામાં જતા થયા. બાળકોને શાળામાં લેવા-મૂકવાની વ્યવસ્થા ગોઠવી પણ અગત્યનું વસાહતમાં જ શાળા થાય તે હતું. vssmની વારંવારની રજૂઆતના અંતે દૂધરેજ વસાહતમાં જ શાળાની મંજુરી મળી પરંતુ, મુશ્કેલી અમલીકરણની હતી. ખુબ મહેનત પછી કામચલાઉ શાળા એક ભાડાના મકાનમાં શરુ કરી પણ જરૂરિયાત તો એક અલાયદી શાળા થાય એની હતી. ઘણો વખત રાહ જોવાની થઇ. વાંરવારની રજૂઆતના અંતે હવે કામ શરૂ થયું છે. બાળકો સતત પૂછતાં અમારી વસાહતમાં શાળા કેમ નહિ? એ પ્રશ્નનો અંત આવ્યો.. જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.

વસાહતના લોકો ગામલોકો સાથે વાત કરતાં ડરતાં. પણ બાલદોસ્ત હર્ષદના સતત માર્ગદર્શનથી હવે પોતાના બાળકો માટે SMC (સ્કુલ મેનેજમેન્ટ કમિટી)માં રજૂઆત કરતાં થયા અને પોતે પણ SMCનો હિસ્સો બન્યા અને પોતાનાં બાળકો માટે ઘર આંગણે નિશાળ લાવ્યા..
