"We have to beg though we do not like to. Our parents used to beg without hesitation."

Young children of Fulwadi community said this. They earlier used to earn money as snake charmers. However, the government banned this activity. Since then they try to earn their livelihood by doing small labour jobs or by begging. The parents move around for work and along with them these children seek alms. 

The boys study till standard 8th and the girls till standard 5th only. They believe that is all they should study. Even parents accept that.

In Kakar Village of Banaskantha there is a large population of Fulwadi community. More than 350 families stay there. However only 125-150 children register their names in the school. There may be more than 300 children. However many have not registered their names. Moreover, even the children move around with their parents so teachers cannot register their names.

In the month of "Magshar" ( as per Hindu calendar) they come home for a month else they along with their parents lead a nomadic life.

Some children stay put in the community and go to school. They survive on their own by begging for food on Saturdays & Sundays which last for the rest of the week.

This is a tragic &  unbelievable situation.

Whenever I go to "Fulwadi" community in Kakar from Ahmedabad, it feel like you have travelled back in time to the 18th Century. 

In order that children staying in this community in Kakar can study, Smt Viraben Meghji Shah (Chanderia) built a school; for them.  However it is extremely difficult for the children to continue going to school on a long term basis. They cannot stay put at one place. This is a tough call for us. We have to overcome this problem of children not going to school.  For that we will do whatever best is required to be done. It requires patience. Our well wishers have to understand that it is difficult to get results overnight. Our donor Pravinbhai Shah in whose mother's name the school is set up understands this and supports us fully. That is a big comfort for us. We at VSSM are thankful to Shri Pravinbhai & his family for their support

'અમાર તો મોગવાનું!'

'પણ માંગવું કોને ગમે?'

'ચમ ના ગમ્. અમાર મા-બાપ તો ઠેઠથી મોગ...'

સાપના ખેલ બતાવીને પેટિયું રળનાર અને ખેલ બતાવવા પર પ્રતિબંધ આવ્યા પછી મજૂરી મળે તો મજૂરી કરીને અને ન મળે તો ભીખ માંગીને પેટિયું રળતા ફૂલવાદી સમુદાયના ટબુડિયાઓ સાથેનો આ સંવાદ. મા-બાપ કામ ધંધા માટે વિચરણ કરે ને એમની સાથે નાના નાના બાળકો પણ ખભે ઝોળી લઈને માંગવાનું કરે. 

બાળકો ધો.8 સુધી ભણે એ વાત વડિલો સમજે. બાકી ધો.8થી આગળનું એમને ન સમજાય. બાળકો પણ 8 ધો. સુધી જ ભણવાનું એમ માને. જ્યારે દિકરીઓ તો 5 ધો. જ ભણે.

બનાસકાંઠાના કાકરમાં ફૂલવાદીની મોટી વસાહત. લગભગ 350 થી વધુ પરિવારો ત્યાં વસે. પણ નિશાળમાં માંડ 125 -150 બાળકોના નામ દાખલ થયા હશે. વસાહતમાં બાળકોની સંખ્યા તો 300 ઉપર હશે પણ બધાના નામ નિશાળમાં લખાવ્યા નથી. વળી બાળકો મા-બાપ સાથે વિચરણ કરે એટલે શિક્ષકો પણ સામે ચાલીને નામ નોંધવાનું કરી ન શકે.

માગસર મહિનામાં આ બધા એક મહિના માટે ઘરે આવે. બાકી ભમતા રામ.

કેટલાક બાળકો વસાહતમાં રહે ને નિશાળમાં જાય. આ બાળકો પોતાનો ખર્ચો જાતે કાઢે. પાંચમાં છઠ્ઠામાં ભણતા બાળકો શનિ રવીમાં અનાજ માંગવા જાય ને જે મળે તેમાંથી અઠવાડિયું ચલાવે.

અકલ્પનીય સ્થિતિ.

અમદાવાદથી જ્યારે કાકરની ફૂલવાદી વસાહતમાં જવું ત્યારે લાગે કે 18મી સદીમાં આવી ગઈ છું.

આ વસાહતમાં રહેતા બાળકો ભણે તે માટે અમે વસાહતમાં જ શ્રીમતી વિરાબહેન મેઘજીભાઈ શાહ(ચંદેરિયા) છાત્રાલય બાંધ્યું. પણ બાળકોનું નિયમીત છાત્રાલયમાં ટકવું ખરેખર મુશ્કેલ. પગમાં ભમરી એટલે પગ ઝાઝો સમય એક જગ્યા પર સ્થિર જ ન થાય.

અમારા માટે પણ આકરી કસોટી. સફળ તો થવાનું જ છે. એ માટે એડીચોટીનું જોર લાગડી દઈશું. પણ આ કાર્યમાં ધીરજ ખુબ જોઈએ. મદદ કરનાર સ્વજનો આ વાત સમજે તો જ બધુ કામનું. બાકી રાતો રાત પરિણામ અહીંયા ન મળે.

અમારા પ્રવિણભાઈ શાહ જેમના માતૃશ્રીના નામ પર આ છાત્રાલય ચાલે એ આ વાત બરાબર સમજે. એટલે જ પુરા ભાવથી અમારા પર શ્રદ્ધા રાખી એ મદદ કરે. એમની બહુ મોટી હૂંફ છે.

When kids like Yagnesh do good in life after working so hard, they will have many stories to share and inspire others....

 “My father sells peanuts, and my mother works as a diamond polisher. I,  want to begin earning and contribute to the family income pool.” Eighteen years old Yagnesh shares his aspirations.

 After finishing his 10th grade, Yagnesh got enrolled in a 1-year paramedical course. After completing the course, he got a job at a private hospital in Surat with a monthly remuneration of Rs. 9,500. Yagnesh aspires to study further in the field of medicine by pursuing a General Nursing Course (GNC). Dr Mayurbhai, the employing doctor at the hospital Yagnesh currently works, is a sensitive individual; he has agreed to Yagnesh continuing with his studies and working at the hospital. This has been a great relief as Yagnesh can now complete his class 12th studies, after which he will apply for the GNC course.

The privileged will never be able to comprehend the struggle it is to study and do well in life, for the children on the margins. The hardships one endures are the best teacher to shape any individual’s character. When kids like Yagnesh do good in life after working so hard, they will have many stories to share and inspire others.

I am sure each child from our hostel will have such stories to share.

VSSM’s education team led by Dimpleben Parikh, Vanita Dave, Bijol Desai, Kokila Chamtha, Pravin Chamtha are the best mentors these children will ever have. The team ensures the children are placed in vocational courses that suit their aptitude, attitude and family background. They identify suitable course taking the mentioned aspects into consideration and also that they get gainfully employed after completing the course. It was Dimpleben who got Yagnesh placed at this private hospital in Surat because she knew the doctor.

Currently, 450 children stay and study at VSSM-operated hostels. We wish continued success to our children.

એ ધો.10 ભણ્યો એ પછી અમે એને પેરામેડીકલનો એક વર્ષનો કોર્સ કરાવ્યો. જેના લીધે એને સુરતની એક હોસ્પીટલમાં 9,500ના પગારથી કામ મળ્યું. એની ઈચ્છા મેડીકલ લાઈનમાં જ આગળ વધવાની. એ જનરલ નર્સીગનો કોર્સ કરવા ઈચ્છે. જે હોસ્પીટલમાં એ કામે લાગ્યો એના ડોક્ટર મયુરભાઈ ખુબ માયાળુ એમણે કહ્યું, મારા ત્યાં કામ કરતા કરતા એ ભલે GNM કરે.

યજ્ઞેશને આનાથી મોટી રાહત મળી. હવે એ ધો.12ની પરિક્ષાની તૈયારી કરી રહ્યો છે. ધો.12 પાસ કરી એ જીએનએમ કરશે.

સુખી સંપન્ન પરિવારના બાળકો યજ્ઞેશ જેવું વિચારી શકે? મારુ માનવું છે સંઘર્ષ આપણને ઘડે છે, ઘણું શીખવે છે. યજ્ઞેશ જેવા બાળકો આ પ્રકારની મહેનત પછી આગળ વધશે ત્યારે એમની પાસે એમની સફળતાની વાર્તાઓ હશે. જે બીજા લોકોને પ્રેરણા આપશે.

અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા દરેક બાળક પાસે આવી વાર્તાઓ છે. અમે બાળકને તેમની ક્ષમતા તો ક્યાંક તેમની ઘરની સ્થિતિ સમજી યોગ્ય રોજગારી મળે તેવા કોર્સમાં દાખલ કરાવતા હોઈએ છીએ. અમારી શિક્ષણ ટીમ જેમાં ડીમ્પલબેન પરીખ, વનીતા દવે, બીજોલ દેસાઈ, કોકીલા ચામઠા, પ્રવિણ ચામઠા વગેરેનો આ કાર્યમાં ઘણો મહત્વનો રોલ.

એ લોકો જ કોર્સ શોધી જે તે જગ્યાએ બાળકોને ગોઠવવાનું કરે ને કોર્સ પત્યા પછી નોકરી માટે પણ વ્યવસ્થા કરે જેમ કે યજ્ઞેશને ડીમ્પલબેને જ સુરતની હોસ્પીટલમાં એમના પરિચીત ડોક્ટરના ત્યાં ગોઠવ્યો.

હાલમાં અમારી પાસે યજ્ઞેશ જેવા 450 બાળકો ભણે છે.. બસ આ બધા બચ્ચાઓ પણ સફળતા પામે તેમ ઈચ્છીએ.

 

Roti Making – A Machine or an useful tool to satisfy our little wonders’ tummy

“Chalo ji Roti Khane” usually this is how our mothers or even we ask our family, friends, relatives to join us for food.

Roti is considered a complete meal. Every Indian meal is served with roti & rice as staple food. In rural India towards the Northern regions rotis or bhakris made of wheat, bajara or jowar are included in all the three times meal. 

VSSM’s Vatsalya Hostel Nomadic Children are from farther most regions of North Gujarat, they have been grown until now with the habitat of having rotis in their all meals. Unlike us or our town side kids, they have choices to make from the variety of cuisine served in breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Our tiny toes had wandered till now, asking for rotis door to door, lets make these rotis a unlimited joy, they cheer while going to school, fulfils them in lunch when they return from school & satisfies their hunger in dinner.

Initially we could not measure the quantity of wheat flour may require per meal, cooks in our hostel were gruelling for making rotis sufficient for 300 + children. These children have a very robust appetite. Most of them have never experienced so much food security. They do not like anything else other than roti and bhakhari. Every meal required making rotis from 70 kg flour just for 180 children. In just 2 months 6 cooks left the job here. Since the kids did not like aloo-poha, upma or anything else, the cooks were required to get up at 3.45 in the morning and begin with marathon roti making sessions. 

Expecting the children to help with these tasks is also inappropriate as they have morning school and need to leave the campus by 6.45 in the morning. These tiring 3 sessions had gradually made cooks to run away. Roti Making machine was the sole tool to minimise the endless efforts and improve the efficiency of cooks. Hence we decided to invest in a machine that rolls and roasts the rotis. This way we have reduced our manpower dependency for rolling rotis as it was the single most challenging task for the cooks.

Today it is like wonder in the kitchen, the first day trial of machine was memorable to our children, their excitement &  pleasure watching these round rotis automatically swifting from the pitballs and turning hot puffed ready to eat in seconds!!

Our dining area now whilst with stories, laughter and satisfaction. Thanks to our valuable donor Mahesh & Maheshwari Desai Foundation INC. they donated the machine in profound memory of their late mother Smt. Nirmalaben Desai. We are grateful to Dr. Maheshji to understand our requirement and helped us in atomizing the structure. 

Our dinning place is must see place in our hostel, the grown up children now act as volunteers, before entering everybody has to remove shoes, everyone must sit on the floor as equals, so all people are on the same level and nobody is ‘above’ anyone else, prayers are performed before they start, plates spoons & bowls are served & then the food is served, volunteers makes sure that children don’t waste food & after they finish they walk in que & after dining, plates and utensils are handed to washing area, they are washed in large communal areas and plates are then stacked for the next round of meal.

Bunk Beds - a need to accommodate more no. of children at VSSM’s hostel...

Sleeping accommodation needs to be suitably furnished and of sufficient size for the number, needs and ages of children accommodated, with appropriate design or pattern comfortable for all age groups of children.

The idea behind purchasing bunk beds for VSSM, Vatsalya hostel was to accommodate more number of nomadic children in small place.

Sleeping area size for girls hostel is apparently huge enough to accommodate all 73 girls. For Boys sleeping area, 12 rooms with 6 beds each are provided in each room along with there is a huge area at the ground floor to accommodate all remaining kids.

Size of each bunk bed is 2.5 x 6 ft.

No of Bunk Beds purchased are 100 – Two tier, cost of each bunk bed is Rs.5500/-.

Hostel accommodates more than 263 nomadic children..

Sleeping area, for both boys hostel & girls hostel is of adequate size and not overcrowded.

Beds are of sufficient size, stable and of sound construction, with mattresses of reasonable depth, clean and in good condition. Mattress are sufficiently warm in winter & separate bedsheets are given and alternately changed. Blankets are received from our beloved Donor Smt. Madhuben.

Bunk beds (beds fully one above the other, as distinct from cabin style beds with desk areas or storage beneath) and apparently does not lead to overcrowding of bedroom or studying space. Beds have adequate space around them for children to change comfortably, and sufficient headroom above them (particularly above bunk beds).

All kids have single bed and individual sleeping cubicles have a good air flow. There is adequate storage space either in or adjacent to sleeping areas for kids clothing and property. Kids can if they wish personalise an area with suitable posters and personal items. Staff, staff family and visitors’ sleeping accommodation is separate from children’s sleeping accommodation. Requests from children to change bed for good reasons are properly considered by hostel in charge.

Pattern of Bunk bed : We have selected a comfortable ladder style pattern of bunk bed, keeping in mind our children are from remote villages they are not used to such style of beds. Firstly they were excited of getting up onto the top bunk. Climbing ladder to reach their own bed was fun now. Earlier kids used to sit or stand on bed and challenge their physical capabilities with other mates or just flop back down while trampling over the other kid, they had quarrel for who will sleep below as there is no ladder.

Apart from the nuisance of a bathroom run in the night there is also the obvious hazard of falling out. Our hostel bunks have proper barrier or side bar and have not heard of any occasions when children in sound sleep have plummeted off.

Safety of children : Our hostel in charge always make a quick check of the slats underneath to ensure that they have not migrated off their tracks – and this will hopefully minimise the risk of a swift descent in the night or worst a severe squashing.

These children have inclination to jump on the beds, while top or bottom bunk there is always the potential to crack their head on the ceiling or the underside of the bed above, hostel in charge take cares that children should not face such injuries.

If given a choice kids always opt for the top bunk. As they experience peaceful sleep on the top. Children need good & sound sleep to ensure proper body and mind development and we at VSSM take care of this important aspect.

VSSM’s Unnati  Girls Hostel : The 40 girls staying in Unnati Hostel are ferried to school in a private van. The distanceis not far but the city traffic is going bad to worse and it isn’t safe for small kids to walk that distance. Hence to address this issue we have arranged vans to help us ferry nomadic children to their schools.

Previously the students used to reach school by auto rickshaws or hired vehicles, as these arrangements were time consuming & to arrange more no of private wheelers at same time was challenging, these arrangements were also costly compared to the current arrangement. Now children commute by Vans, though they are private but the school timings are maintained. It costs Rs.300/- per child per month.

VSSM’s Vatsalya Hostel :  Managing the transport of 275 children of Vatsalaya Hostel to 5 different schools has been quite a challenge. The distance is more, the early morning traffic in the city near Naroda (north side of Ahmedabad) is worse due to factories & industries exist here. While it’s not safe for small children to walk that distance. Hence, to address this issue we have purchased a School Bus SML ISUZU 50+ Seater. The Purchase Cost of Bus is 14,51,000/-. It’s  being supplied on a very concessional price, below their ex-showroom price through one of our well-wisher Shri. Kiritbhai Shah. It gives immense pleasure to share with you that CIMS Hospital,Ahmedabad, has sponsored rupees 9 Lacs under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), for this generous cause. VSSM has contributed the balance amount of Rs. 5,51,000/-, for the purchase of bus.

We favoured the decision to buy our own school bus the reason being plying kids to/fro hostel and other multipurpose use including that of an education trip to enhance outlook of these nomadic children.
Our objectives behind buying school bus & the procedures our children & staff observe are as :

1. Prescribed information of children their respective school, individual timing to & fro are maintained by the bus driver & bus attendant.
2. Bus service is for N.V. Patel Vidyala, Nutan Vidyalaya, Satyam Vidyalaya, Anand Vidyalaya & Kanya Shala 1 & 2 No. Our children study in these five different schools, according to their standards.
3. Using the school vehicle is an opportunity for the pupils to cultivate good habits like patience, forbearance, tolerance, sympathy, team spirit, cooperation and consideration for others.
4. Children maintain order and discipline in the school bus.
5. Drivers and bus attendees are empowered to report complaints to the Hostel incharge for any action of the pupil which does not befit a cultures personality.
6. Children behaviour is monitored while waiting for the bus, entering the bus only in single line, special consideration is to be given to girls and small children.
7. No choral, shouting or throwing articles out of the bus is allowed. Making comments on the pupil outside, arguing with them etc., will invite stringent disciplinary action.
8. Maintenance of Bus is monitored by Bus driver & attendant. And Log book is maintained for the same.
9. If any child is late for school, bus doesn’t wait they have to adhere to other students timings. Such left out kids are sent separately by hostel in charge.
10. School timings are maintained & children return to hostel happily and in good spirits.

Sharing some more of VSSM's bitter-sweet experiences

Kamalaben Gadaliyaa was at  VSSM’s  office to drop her sons Mangal and Kamlesh both of who had ran away without informing from the newly initiated Vatsalya hostel. “Ben, we have given them birth, but you are their true parent because you have cared to educate them. We Gadaliya are considered to be tough hearted people however it was with great difficulty and a heavy heart I chose to send my children to this hostel. Ahmedabad is quite far from Vakaner you see!! But my boys proved to be worthless, you cared for them like a mother and yet  they decide to run away from school without informing anyone. How much stress you much have undergone worrying about the whereabouts of my children. When Valjibhai called up to convey that the boys had not reached back to the hostel more than them I worried about was you, how would you have felt!! You must have thought that Kamla’s sons are useless. The moment they arrived in the settlement i beat them up..they simply don’t get it what will happen of them if they do not study..we have endured so much of pain because we never got to go to school. We want our children to study and have a better future, we work hard to ensure they remain in school and look at these boys they do not want to study. I have told them if they do not want to remain in school the have no place in the house so do not return back home..” a visibly upset  Kamlaben continued speaking and crying at the same time. 

Seeing her cry the atmosphere in the office turned a bit heavy but we were glad to see such commitment from a parent to educate her children. The sons while assuring not to repeat the mistake tried  comforting her. They even promised  me something like this will not happen again  and will focus on studies!  

Rakesh who happens to be the elder to Mangal and Kamlesh also wanted to join the hostel. “Ben, enrol me in the hostel as well I too want to study!!” he requested and his mother also joined him. We have decided to enrol him, let’s see how much he can study..

We are experiencing many such incidents everyday. Some parents come complaining some thanking but all are trying to give their future generation a better tomorrow. The families shave absolutely nothing to contribute hence VSSM has taken complete responsibility of their children by trying its best to educate them.  However though VSSM wouldn’t have succeed in taking such leaps without the support of our well-wishing  friends. Many-many of you have helped us provide food, stationary, clothes to  our 350 children. 

I am sure through our collective strength we shall be able to educate  not just 350 but 3000 children and provide the mothers like Kamlaben freedom from painful drudgery she has endured all her life…..

વિચરતી જાતિના બાળકો માટે વી.એસ.એસ.એમ. દ્વારા શરૃ કરેલી હોસ્ટેલના ખાટા મીઠા અનુભવો

‘બેન અમે તો છોકરાંઓને જનમ જ આપ્યો છે પણ તમે તો એના ખરા મા-બાપ છો. અમારા ગાડલિયા મને કઠણ કાળજાની કે છે. છોકરાંઓને આમ વાંકાનેર થી છેક અમદાવાદ ભણવા મુક્યા છે તે. પણ મેય મારા કાળજા પર પથરો મુકીને તેમને મારાથી દૂર મુક્યા છે. પણ આ છોકરાંઓ કપાતર પાક્યા. વગર કીધે નિશાળમાંથી આમ ભાગી આવાય? મને છોકરાં કરતાંય વધારે તમારી ચિંતા થાતીતી. તમે એમને માવીતરની ઘોડે હાચવો અને છોકરાં આમ કીધા વગર ભાગી આવે તો તમને કેટલી ચીંતા રે. 

છોકરાં હોસ્ટેલમાં ના પુગ્યા એટલે વાલજી સાહેબનો ફોન આયો. મને તમારી જ ચિંતા હતી. તમને કેવું લાગશે આ કમલાના છોકરાં આવા કપાતર પાક્યા એમ થાતુ હશેને બેન. છોકરાં વસાહતમાં આયા એવા પેલા તો બે ધોલ મારીતી બેન. એને હમજ નહીં પડતી કે નહીં ભણે તો શું થાશે. અમે ગધા મજુરી કરીએ છીએને તોય બે ટંક ભેગા થાતા નથી. લાબાચા લઈને આખી દુનિયામાં ભટક્યા કરવાનું. આમના નસીબમાં આ બધુ ના આવે એટલે એમને ભણાવવા મેનત કરુ છુ તે આમને ભણવું નથી. પણ બેન મે હવે એમને કહી દીધુ છે કે, ભણવું ના હોય તો ઘરમાં તમારી માટે કોઈ જગ્યા જ નથી. એટલે ત્યાં તો આવતા જ નહીં.’

કમલાબેનની ભણતરની સમજણ જોઈને આનંદ થયો. બાળકોને પાછા મુકવા તેઓ આવ્યા અને ઉપરની વાત કરતા છોકરાંઓની સામે જ રડી પડ્યા. ઘડીક તો વાતાવરણ ગમગીન થઈ ગયું. મંગળ અને નાના કમલેશે ‘મા હવે ભણીશું નહીં ભાગીએ પણ તુ રડમા’ એમ કહીને માને દીલાશો આપ્યો તો મને ‘હવે નહીં ભાગીએ અને ખુબ ભણીશું તેવું વચન આપ્યું.’

મંગળ અને કમલેશનો મોટોભાઈ રાકેશ જે ભણતો નથી. તેને ભણવું છે એટલે ‘હોસ્ટેલમાં મને રાખો બને મારે ભણવું છે’ તેવી વિનંતી સાથે કમલાબેન સાથે આવ્યો. અમે હાલ પુરતો એને રાખ્યો છે એને ભણાવશું. જોઈએ એ કેટલું કરી શકશે.

પણ આવા કાંઈ કેટલાય ખાટા મીઠા અનુભવો થઈ રહ્યા છે. કેટલાક વાલીઓ ફરિયાદ લઈને આવે તો કેટલાક કોઈ ફરિયાદ વગર ઉપકારભાવથી તેમની ભાવી પેઢી પોતે જે યાતના વેઠી રહ્યા છે તેવી યાતના ના વેઠે તે માટે બાળકોને ભણાવવા મથી રહી છે. તેમની આર્થિક સ્થિતિ સારી નથી એટલેvssm તેમની સંપૂર્ણ જવાબદારી લઈને તેમને ભણાવવા કોશીશ કરે છે.

આ બધુ સમાજના સહયોગ વગર શક્ય નથી. જે લોકો આ કામમાં મદદરૃપ થઈ રહ્યા છે તે તમામના અમે આભારી છીએ સાથે સાથે અનાજ, સ્ટેશનરી વગેરેની ૩૫૦ બાળકોની ઘણી મોટી જરૃરિયાતને પહોંચીવળવા ખુબ લોકો મદદમાં જોડાય તેવી અપેક્ષા રાખીએ છીએ.

એક વ્યક્તિ ધારે તો થોડું કરી શકે પણ આપણા જેવા હજારો લોકો ભેગા થશે તો 3૫૦ શું 3000 બાળકોને પણ આપણે ભણાવી શકીશું અને કમલાબેન જેવી હજારો માને તેમણે વેઠેલી વેદનામાંથી મુક્તિ અપાવી શકીશું.

Janaki realises her true potential…...

Quite, intelligent, diligent and mature beyond her age is how we would describe 11 years old Janaki Nayak. In 2012, 7 years old Janaki arrived at Kalrav Hostel in Doliya along with elder sister Payal.  These small girls  had just lost their mother and the daunting task of raising the family was left on their father Vishnubhai who works as manual laborer.  A shattered Vishnubhai was in no condition either psychologically, physically or financially to take care of his five children; four daughters and one son all between the ages of 10 years to 2 months at the time his wife passed away.  Nonetheless, it was important for him to keep going so that at the end of the day he had money to buy food to feed his children.  A concerned and caring father that he is, Vishnubhai decided not to remarry but raise children with some help from his extended family. Another concern that boggled him was education of his children. These devastated children who were going to school found it hard to cope with the loss of   their mother.  He approached VSSM with a request to enroll his elder two daughters in the Doliya Hostel.

At the time of her enrolment Janaki could hardly  read or write and was under sever trauma. She would frequently wake up in the middle of the night crying for her mother. The team of Kalrav provided her all the necessary care and support and love of a mother. Today, Janaki is a confident 11 year old, studying in 6th grade, excelling in studies as well as co-curricular activities. Since last 2 years Janaki ranks first in her class, recently she went on to win the school elocution competition when she spoke on the subject of ‘Democracy and the Indian Election system.’ Janaki takes initiative of managing various tasks in the hostel and performs her duties well.
 The adversities of life  have made Janaki an extremely mature girl at a very young age. She is aware of the sacrifices her father has made to raise her and the siblings, especially not marrying again (which is very common in their community).  When she grows up she wants make life easy for her father. Janaki desires to peruse medicine when she grows up.
 So what would have become of Janaki had she not come to stay at Kalrav hostel?? Well, she like hundreds of girls of her community would have been married and working as a child labour in any of the farms to supplement her family’s income and feed the large brood!! It is the opportunities created at Kalrav that has enabled Janaki realize her true potential.

vssm સંચાલિત કલરવ હોસ્ટેલ, ડોળીયામાં ભણતી જાનકી વકૃત્વ સ્પર્ધામાં પ્રથમ

“પપ્પા, મારી મમ્મી ક્યારે આવશે...?” સહજ રીતે માતાની છત્રછાયા ગુમાવી બેઠેલ દીકરી જાનકી દ્વારા અનાયાસે પૂછવામાં આવેલ પ્રશ્ન! વાત છે મહેલજ ગામના વતની નાયક વિષ્ણુભાઈની. પત્ની ચાર-ચાર દીકરીઓ અને એક દીકરાને મુકીને ચાલી ગઈ, અવિરત અનંત પ્રવાસે. પાંચ-પાંચ સંતાનોની જવાબદારી ખભે લઈ વિષ્ણુભાઈ આખો દિવસ ‘દાડ્યું’ કરી ગુજરાન ચલાવે. ઘરે મારાં બાળકો એકલા-અટુલા છે” તેવી દ્વિધામાં હંમેશા રહે.
બાળકો ઘીમે-ધીમે મોટા થવા માંડ્યા, દરેક પિતાની જેમ તેમને તેમના અભ્યાસનો પ્રશ્ન સતાવવા માંડ્યો. તેઓ પણ યુનિફોર્મ પહેરી ઊછળ કૂદ કરતા બાળકોના સપના જોવા માંડ્યા. પરંતુ,એક મજુરી કરતા, ઘર વિહોણા, વિધુર પાંચ બાળકોનાં બાપને તે અધિકાર ક્યાંથી હોય. સરકારે શિક્ષણ એક ‘મૂળભૂત બંધારણીય અધિકાર’ ઘોષિત કર્યું છતા પણ ભણતરમાં પૈસાનો ભાર અનિવાર્ય છે તે વિષ્ણુભાઈ સારી પેઠે જાણતા હતા. તેથી ગામઠી સરકારી નિશાળમાં જાનકીને દાખલ કરી, પણ મન:સ્થિતિ પહેલા જેવી જ, કારણ ત્રીજા ધોરણમાં હોવાં છતાં જાનકીને કક્કાનો ક ન આવડે.
આવા કપરા સંજોગોમાં વિષ્ણુભાઈએ ડોળીયા ગામમાં vssm દ્વારા વિચરતી જાતિનાં બાળકો માટે ચાલતા છાત્રાલય વિશે સાંભળ્યું. આ છાત્રાલયમાં બાળકોને વિનામૂલ્યે ભણાવાય છે તે સાંભળી વિષ્ણુભાઈએ છાત્રાલયની મુલાકાત લીધી. “હે બુન, મારી છોડીને ઓય ભણવા રાખશો?” ડોળીયા કન્યા છાત્રાલયનાં બાલદોસ્ત વંદનાને અભણ બાપે પુછેલ સાહજિક પ્રશ્ન.
સર્વે દ્વારા કુટુંબની પરિસ્થિતિનું આકલન કરી જાનકીને ચોથા ધોરણમાં દાખલ કરવામાં આવી. આમ, વિધિવત્ રીતે શિક્ષાનો પ્રારંભ થયો. જાનકી પ્રથમ વર્ષે છાત્રાલયમાં કક્કાના ક થી જ્ઞ જાણી શીખી. હંમેશા નિયમિત વિદ્યાર્થીની જાનકીએ ધીમે-ધીમે પોતાની પ્રતિભા દેખાડવા માંડી. ભણતરનું એવું તો ઘેલું લાગ્યું કે પાંચમાં ધોરણની વાર્ષિક પરીક્ષામાં નાયક જાનકી વિષ્ણુભાઈ પ્રથમ નંબર લાવી. અત્યારે એના વર્ગમાં એ ‘રેન્કર’ છટ્ઠા ઘોરણમાં અભ્યાસ કરે છે.
આજે જાનકી છાત્રાલય વ્યવસ્થાની ઘણી જવાબદારીઓ સંભાળે છે. બાળકોના સર્વાંગી વિકાસ માટે છાત્રાલયમાં અવારનવાર ઈત્તર પ્રવૃત્તિઓ થતી હોય છે. તેમાં પણ તેણી સક્રિયપણે, રસપૂર્વક ભાગ લે. ૨૫મી જાન્યુઆરી એટલે રાષ્ટ્રીય મતદાતા દિવસ. આ દિવસે શાળામાં યોજાયેલ વકૃત્વ સ્પર્ધામાં હોશભેર જાનકીએ ભાગ લીધો. અને ‘લોકશક્તિ અને ભારતની ચૂંટણી પ્રક્રિયા’ વિષય પર બોલી પ્રથમ ક્રમાંકે આવી. પિતા તરીકે વિષ્ણુભાઈ આજે કહે છે, “આ vssmની નીહાળે મારી છોડીને ખુબ સારી સુવિધા આપી. આજે મારી બે છોડી ને એક છોરો ઓય ભણે સે. હું બીજાને પણ કવ સુ તમારા સોકરાવને ભણવા ઓય મુકો.”
જાનકી જેવાં અનેકોનાં અનેક કોડ ઈશ્વર પૂર્ણ કરે તેવા મનોરથ સાથે, વિષ્ણુભાઈ જેવાં અનેક બાપનાં ૭૦૦ થી વધારે સંતાનોને vssm વિનામૂલ્યે શિક્ષાની સુવિધા પૂરી પાડી રહ્યું છે.

10 years ago when we began working with the nomadic communities of Gujarat we realised that  the challenges they faced were immense, we were absolutely clueless on how to begin, from where to begin, the lives of hundreds and thousands  of these families was in absolute shatters. Right from establishing them as citizens of this country to addressing their need for housing, livelihood, education, health and restoring their dignity everything had to addressed. We took baby steps and with perseverance we tackled one issue at a time. 10 years down the line we have made significant progress and much has changed for the better, but one issue that is Education of the nomadic children is a biggest challenge we face requiring very intensive efforts. 

From bridge schools in tents to hostels in rented premises, enrolling children in prominent education institutions across Gujarat, VSSM has made efforts in all these directions in its mission to educate the children of some of the most marginalised and extremely poor communities of this country.  But what we required was a premises and institute that addresses the specific needs of nomadic children, such children who have never lived settled lives and socialised in that manner. VSSM has had contemplated such facility but funds were always an issue. Mumbai based ‘Jain Yuvak Sangh’ helped us ease the need of funds by making a generous donation of Rs. 65 lakhs for the construction of an education enclave for the children of nomads. The land required for the same has been donated by ‘Sadvichar Parivar.’

vssm દ્વારા વિચરતી જાતિના બાળકોના અભ્યાસ માટે નિવાસી સંકુલ બનાવવા માટે ભુમીભુજન યોજાઈ ગયું.

વિચરતા સમુદાયના પરિચયમાં આવવાનું થયું ત્યારે એ લોકો જે મુશ્કેલી વેઠી રહ્યાં હતાં એ જોઇને જ હેરાન થઇ જવાયું હતું. સમસ્યાઓ તો ગણ્યા ગણાય નહિ અને છાબડીમાં માય નહિ એટલી. ધીમે ધીમે બધું સમજાતું ગયું અને ઉકેલો સુઝતા ગયા એમ એમ આગળ વધતાં ગયા. નાગરિક તરીકેની ઓળખ, ઘર, રોજગાર અને શિક્ષણની દિશામાં નોંધપાત્ર કહી શકાય એવું કામ થઇ રહ્યું છે. 

પણ શિક્ષણમાં જેટલું કરીએ છીએ એના કરતા પણ વધારે કામની જરૂર હતી. વિચરતી જાતિઓની વસાહતોમાં જ તંબુશાળા અને ત્યારબાદ ભાડા પર હોસ્ટેલ શરુ કરી. આ બધામાં આ સમુદાયના બાળકોને અનુરૂપ શિક્ષણ સંકુલ થાય તે અત્યંત જરૂરી લાગતું હતું. મુંબઈમાં vssmના કામોમાં સદાય સહાયભૂત થતાં ‘શ્રી મુંબઈ જૈન યુવક સંઘ’ના ટ્રસ્ટીગણે રૂ.૬૫ લાખ બાળકોના શિક્ષણ અર્થે બાંધવાની થતી હોસ્ટેલ માટે એકત્રિત કરી આપ્યાં અને ‘સદવિચાર પરિવારે’ હોસ્ટેલ માટે જમીન આપી. આ જમીનનું ભૂમિપૂજન તા.૨૦ ફેબ્રુઆરીના રોજ ઉવારસદ મુકામે યોજાઈ ગયું.. 

બસ વિચરતી જાતિના બાળકો માટે સુંદર નિવાસી શાળાનું સ્વપ્ન ઝટ પૂરું થાય એવી પ્રભુ પ્રાર્થના..

Looking at the way our charismatic and wonderful daughters residing at the Ahmedabad hostel are growing triggers the feelings of relief and joy…it makes us thank the moment we decided to start a hostel for these nomadic girls and  give them an opportunity to realise their potential, to grow and bloom in a secured and encouraging environment.  

Since last June, 35 girls haven been staying in a hostel initiated by VSSM just behind its Ahmedabad office. The girls are enrolled in a leading school of Ahmedabad  city - the H. B. Kapadia School where they are gradually improving in their studies. Thought one field they excel in is sports. 

On 22nd February during the school’s  Annual Sports Day event the girls won numerous medals, so many that when they began showing me the medals I could not stop myself from asking, “ were you all alone at the event or the event had other participants as well??” To which they replied, “Didi, there were so many other participants but we remained ahead of them, our teacher also told us that along with studies we are improving in sports activities too!!” After which they all broke into a carefree laughter. 

I asked them to line up with their medals and allow me to take a group photograph. “Didi, share this picture with our parents so that they get to know what we have accomplished, how understanding and clever we have become…”

Such amazing and resilient  daughters we are blessed to be taking care of….

vssm દ્વારા ચાલતી હોસ્ટેલની દીકરીઓનો સ્પોર્ટ્સમાં ઉત્તમ દેખાવ

Vssm દ્વારા અમદાવાદમાં વિચરતી જાતિની દીકરીઓની હોસ્ટેલ ચાલે જેમાં ૩૫ દીકરીઓ ભણી રહી છે. આ દીકરીઓ અમદાવાદની ખુબ જાણીતી સ્કુલ એચ.બી. કાપડીયામાં અભ્યાસ કરી રહી છે. ભણવામાં ધીમે ધીમે તેજસ્વી થઇ રહી છે પણ રમત- ગમતમાં અવ્વલ છે.

તા.૨૨ ફેબ્રુઆરીના રોજ દીકરીઓની સ્કુલમાં આયોજિત સ્પોર્ટ્સ ડેમાં હોસ્ટેલની દીકરીઓ ઢગલાબંધ મેડલ જીતીને આવી. જયારે એમણે મેડલ બતાવવાના શરુ કર્યા એટલે સાહજિક રીતે પૂછાઈ ગયું, 

‘સ્પર્ધામાં તમે એકલા જ હતા કે બીજા કોઈ હતા?’

અને અમારી વહાલી દીકરીઓએ કહ્યું, ‘દીદી બહુ બધા હતા પણ અમે બધામાં આગળ રહ્યાં. અમારા ટીચર કહેતાં કહેતાં હતા કે, આ છોકરીઓ તો ભણવાની સાથે સાથે હવે રમવા પણ પહેલી આવવા માંડી છે.’ આટલું કહી બધી જ દીકરીઓ ખુબ હસી..

મે બધાના ફોટો પડ્યા એટલે એમણે કહ્યું, ‘અમારા ઘરે આ ફોટો મોકલાવજો એ લોકો જુએ તો એમને ખ્યાલ આવે કે, અમે ક્યાં પહોચી ગયા છીએ!.. કેવી સમજદાર થઇ ગઈ છે..

Viram Vansfoda, son of Chaganbhai Vansfoda of Jesada village in Shankheshwar block of Patan studies in 5 standard at the village primary school. He has recently won a gold medal in the long jump event at a sports meet organised at the Sankheshwar block level. 

Chaganbhai  earns his living by selling plastic house-ware. These once nomadic Vansfoda families now lead settled lives with men wandering in neighbouring villages for selling such plastic ware.  VSSM has been instrumental in helping this families obtain residential plots in the village. Currently the construction of their houses in underway. 

Viram winning  a medal is a  matter of pride for his entire settlement. “ VSSM will  support you only on a precondition - you will have to send your children to school and ensure they receive continuous education,” was a requirement VSSM’s Mohanbhai had put forth these families before beginning to support them. This is how such barters pay off…. and we are definitely not going to have it any other way…..

વિરમ વાંસફોડા તાલુકા કક્ષાની લાંબીકુદ સ્પર્ધામાં પ્રથમ આવ્યો..

પાટણ જીલ્લાના શંખેશ્વર તાલુકાના જેસડાગામમાં રહેતાં છગનભાઈ વાંસફોડાનો ધો.૫માં ભણતો દીકરો વિરમ તાલુકા કક્ષાની લાંબીકુદ સ્પર્ધામાં પ્રથમ આવ્યો.

વિરમભાઇ પ્લાસ્ટીકના તબકડા વેચવાનું કામ કરે છે. vssmના સતત પ્રયત્નથી આ પરીવારોને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ અને ઘર બાંધકામ માટે મકાન સહાય મળી છે. એમના ઘરો બનવાનું કામ ચાલુ છે. આ પરિવારો હવે સ્થાઈ રહે છે અને એમના બાળકો સ્કુલમાં ભણવા જાય છે. પુરુષો કામ માટે આસપાસના વિસ્તારમાં વિચરણ કરે. 

આવામાં વિરમનું તાલુકામાં પ્રથમ આવવું આખી વસાહત માટે ગૌરવ સામાન છે. vssmના કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈની આ પરિવારોના પ્લોટ અને અન્ય કામોમાં મદદ કરવા માટે મુકેલી શરત કે ‘તમારા બાળકોને શાળામાં ભણવા મોકલશો તો જ હું તમારા કામમાં મદદ કરીશ’ એનું આ પરિણામ છે.

The KALRAV and VATSALYA are two Hostel in Doliya is a VSSM managed hostel supported by The Giant Group of Central Mumbai and Arati Foundation. The Kalrav hostel (Nomadic girls hostel) first became operation to accommodate  girls from the nomadic families but as the demand from boys emerged Vatsalya hostel (Nomadic boys hostel) became operational to accommodate the boys of nomadic communities. Currently around 200 children stay with these hostels.

While the children stay with the hostel they school at the government schools in Doliya. Along with the regular studies emphasis is given on the all round development of the children and they are mentored lot of co-curricular activities.

Two children for both the hostels showed outstanding performance in the recently organised art and painting competition by the ‘Kala Shikshak Sangh.'

Samata Nakiya, a 9th grader from Digsar village in Surendranagar’s Muli block bagged a gold medal in her category. Samata comes from a family of 6 daughters. The economic condition of her family is so weak that educating his daughters was an impossible task for her father. VSSM asked her father to send his girls to Kalrav hostel. Samata wishes to be a teacher when she grows up.

Ravi from the Vatsalya Hostel went on to secure bronze medal in the competition. Ravi is from Kadi town, his father earned living by working as construction labour. The family was always on the move wandering in each of work. This affected the Ravi’s chances of receiving decent education. Hence he was enrolled in Vatsalya Hostel.

Such initiatives by VSSM supported by its well-wishers are enabling extremely marginalised children realise their potential and achieve their dream of a better brighter future.

vssm સંચાલિત હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા વિચરતી જાતિના બાળકોએ ચિત્ર સ્પર્ધામાં સિદ્ધિ હાંસલ કરી

સુરેન્દ્રનગર જીલ્લાના સાયલા તાલુકાના ડોળીયા ગામે ‘વિચરતા સમુદાય સમર્થન મંચ’ સંચાલિત ‘જાયન્ટ ગ્રુપ ઓફ સેન્ટ્રલ મુંબઈ’ અને ‘આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન’ના આર્થિક સહયોગથી ચાલતી કલરવ કન્યા છાત્રાલય અને વાત્સલ્ય કુમાર છાત્રાલયમાં વિચરતી અને વિમુક્ત  જાતિઓનાં બાળકો અભ્યાસ કરી રહ્યા છે.

છાત્રાલયમાં અભ્યાસની સાથે સાથે અન્ય પ્રવૃત્તિ પણ કરાવવામાં આવે છે. તાજેતરમાં જ ‘કલા શિક્ષક સંઘ’ દ્વારા આયોજિત ચિત્ર રંગપુરણી સ્પર્ધામાં બન્ને હોસ્ટેલના બે વિદ્યાર્થીઓએ ઉત્કૃષ્ટ પ્રદર્શન કર્યું.

કલરવ કન્યા છાત્રાલયમાં રહીને ધોરણ ૯માં અભ્યાસ કરતી મુળી તાલુકાના દિગસર ગામની સમતા નાકીયા એ પ્રથમ ક્રમ પ્રાપ્ત કરી ને સુવર્ણચંદ્રક પ્રાપ્ત કર્યો . સમતાના પરિવારમાં ૬ બહેનો છે અને આર્થિક પરિસ્થિતિ ખરાબ હોવાના કારણે સમતાને આગળ ભણાવી શકવાની એના પિતાની ક્ષમતા નહોવાના કારણે સમતાને vssm સંચાલિત હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા મૂકી છે. સમતા પણ ભણીને  શિક્ષક બનવા માંગે છે .  

વાત્સલ્ય કુમાર છાત્રાલયમાં રહીને ધોરણ ૯માં અભ્યાસ કરતો રવિ બજાણીયા એ ચિત્ર રંગપુરણી સ્પર્ધામાં તૃતીય ક્રમ પ્રાપ્ત કરીને કાંસ્યચંદ્રક મેળવ્યો હતો. રવિ મુળ નાની કડીનો વતની છે. તેના પપ્પા કડિયાકામ કરીને પરિવારનું ગુજરાન ચલાવે છે. તેઓ મજુરી માટે વિચરણ કરતા રહે છે. આથી તેમણે રવિને હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા માટે મુક્યો છે.

વિચરતી જાતિના દરેક બાળકોનું ભવિષ્ય તેજોમય બને એવી શુભેચ્છા સાથે રવી અને સમતાને ખુબ ખુબ અભિનંદન..

The girls hostel in Ahmedabad that became functional in June last year has been receiving lot of love and support from the community of our Ahmedabad based well-wishers and friends. One such ardent well-wisher is U. S. based  Mardaviben Patel .  On her recent visit to the city she decided to take the girls from these hostel  for a day trip to Inroad Nature Park situated in Gandhinagar. Everyone including Mardaviben was exited about this trip. She also asked her friends to join for this outing. The girls were so overwhelmed with the trip that they planned everything a day before. Had a good head bath so that they could have a desired hair style for the outing.

We are extremely thankful to you Mardaviben for taking this initiative and giving a special day full of fun memories to these girls. We were looking forward to plan an exposure trip for them, take them in lap of nature, you read our minds by planning this outing.  I am glad you are associated with us. A big THANK YOU DIDI on behalf of the girls  as well.

vssm દ્વારા અમદાવાદમાં વિચરતી જાતિની દીકરીઓની હોસ્ટેલ ચલાવવામાં આવે છે. આ દીકરીઓને ખુબ લોકોનો પ્રેમ મળ્યો છે. અમેરિકામાં રહેતાં અને vssm ના કામોમાં સદાય સહાયભૂત થતાં માર્દવીબહેન પટેલે આ દીકરીઓને એક દિવસના પ્રવાસે લઇ જવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. દીકરીઓની સાથે સાથે માર્દવીબહેનને પણ ખુબ ઉત્સાહ. પોતે અને એમનાં મિત્રો પણ આ પ્રવાસમાં દીકરીઓ સાથે જોડાયા. પ્રિય અને વહાલાં માર્દવીબહેન - દીકરીઓનો એક દિવસ ખાસ બનાવવા માટે અમે આપના આભારી છીએ.. દીકરીઓ બહારની દુનિયા અને કુદરતનું સૌંદર્ય મહત્તમ માણે એવી અમારી ઈચ્છાને આપે પૂરી કરી છે અમે સૌ આપના આભારી છીએ અને આપ સાથે છો એનો આનંદ વ્યક્ત કરું છું.

ફરવા જવાનું છે એટલે દીકરીઓએ પણ પૂરી તૈયારી કરી લીધેલી. વાળ તો ગઈકાલથી જ ધોઈ નાખેલા જેથી હેરસ્ટાઈ કરી શકાય. આ દીકરીઓની ભાષામાં કહું તો thank you દીદી..

Some beautiful moments we experience with our lovely daughters

The  hostel at Ahmedabad for the girls from nomadic families was initiated as a response to resolve the issue of education for the girls living marginalised lives in some remote part of the state. It was a challenge we had to embrace without being concerned about the way the program would move further. We had embarked upon this journey with no infrastructure or logistics in place. All we had was strong desire to give these girls a different life. Acclimatising the girls to the environment of learning and community living was the first and the hardest  challenge we had to tackle. Along with the girls we had to tackle their parents who always were prepared to fight with us and came up with hoards of issues. Dealing with them on daily basis was extremely exhausting…. all these while we are struggling to make room for 35 girls, mobilising ration, supplies, managing school admissions etc. Everyday I would be speaking so much that by the end of the day my mouth and ribs hurt. The day would be long, starting from 7. 45 (reaching office) stretching up to  some wee hours when the conditions would ease up for me to return home. The family especially young Kiara remained  neglected all the time …

During these times Vrutika and Hetal joined us as Baldosts for this hostel. They are an absolute treasure to the program. Extremely hard working, loving and selfless ladies who too had to endure the various allegations made by the parents. Gradually things began to calm down. The duo managed to calm the nerves of these girls, they began focusing  on studies and their life in the hostel. Vrutika and Hetal took charge of them as a mother does for her children. Without any disgust they cared and nurtured the girls. Cleaned them, bathed the small ones, nursed them during their illness. They became their mothers, their guardians.. Recently Reena also joined the team. She works in the VSSM office during the day and lives with these girls during the night. These Baldosts have made it possible for me to remain at home during Sundays. I can now come to office at 10 and travel for work with a relative ease..

The same applies for the other  deligent and dear  set of Baldosts at Doliya… Vandana, Valji, Jalpa, Harkishan and Harshad. Together this team cares for 200 children.

Having  such devoted team has enabled us to reach to hundreds of children from nomadic communities …A big Thank you. It is your dedication and whole hearted efforts that are bringing such amazing results to our education initiative. It is because of you that I can focus on other challenges the nomads face.

In the midst of such tumultuous teething times  we were joined by an enthusiastic and extremely  caring  volunteer Dimpleben, not only she worries about the girls but also about the activities of VSSM, a big thank you for being with us during such times of need.  We are immensely delighted to have with us.

VSSM’s team members Chayaben, Shardaben, Ilaben, Amiben worked round the corner to make sure the girls felt at home in their new residence.

Our dear friends Pragneshbhai, Kiritbhai, Namrataben, Direndrabhai, Satsang Parivar never left our side and made sure we had all the infrastructure and support we needed. Their warm support ensured we keep going on the mission we had embarked upon. I am grateful to for your presence in VSSM…

This doesn’t happen everyday… yesterday the girls who were heading to school  and Baldosts suddenly felt the need to have a group photograph clicked…. the moment captured in the camera…..such priceless moments wash away  all the pain,  both mental and physical, of working with these communities….

vssm દ્વારા વિચરતી જાતિની દીકરીઓની અમદાવાદમાં શરુ કરેલી હોસ્ટેલ હવે હવે થાળે પડી રહી છે..

અમદાવાદમાં vssm દ્વારા અને સમાજના સહયોગથી ચાલતી હોસ્ટેલમાં દીકરીઓ ભણવા આવી. શરૂઆતમાં દીકરીઓને ગોઠવવી ખુબ મુશ્કેલ હતી. દીકરીઓ અને એમના માં-બાપની ઢગલોબંધ ફરિયાદો. થાકી જવાય. ક્યારેક તો બોલી બોલીને પાંસળી દુખવા માંડે. સવારે ૭:૪૫ વાગે ઓફીસ આવી જાઉં અને રાતના ઘરે જવાનો સમય નક્કી નહિ. મૌલિક અને કીયારાને પણ અન્યાય કરું. 

આ સ્થિતિમાં વૃતિકા અને હેતલ આ દીકરીઓના બાલદોસ્ત તરીકે જોડાયા. બન્નેની ખુબ મહેનત. વૃતિકા ઉપર તો દીકરીઓ અને એના માં-બાપે ઘણા આક્ષેપો કર્યા. અમને વૃતિકા જોઈએ જ નહિ એવી માંગણી પણ કરી. પણ ધીમે ધીમે સમજાવટ અને આ બંનેનો દીકરી ઉપરના અપાર પ્રેમના કારણે અમારી દીકરીઓ શાંત થઇ, ભણવા માંડી. જે વૃતિકા ગમતી નહિ એ આજે બે કલાક માટે જવાનું કહે તો અનુ અને વિજયા તો એને પકડીને રડવા જ માંડે. વાગ્યા પરનો ઘા હોય કે આ દીકરીઓની સ્વચ્છતાનો મુદ્દો હોય, કોઈ છોછ વગર ખુબ પ્રેમથી બંને બાલદોસ્ત દીકરીઓને સાચવે.

હમણા એમાં રીના પણ જોડાઈ. આખો દિવસ ઓફિસમાં કામ કરે અને રાતના આ દીકરો સાથે રહે.. આ બાલદોસ્તોના કારણે હવે હું રવિવારે ઘરે રહી શકું છું. ઓફીસ પણ ૧૦ વાગે આવું છું.

આવા જ વહાલા ડોળીયા હોસ્ટેલના બાલદોસ્તો વંદના, જલ્પા, વાલજી, હરકિશન અને હર્ષદ જેઓ ૨૦૦ બાળકોને સાચવે છે..

આવા સરસ બાલદોસ્તોના કારણે જ વિચરતી જાતિના બાળકો સાથેનું કામ શક્ય બને છે.. મારા વહાલા બાલદોસ્તો thank you. તમે છો તો બાળકોને તમને સોપીને હું વિચરતી જાતિ સાથેનું બીજું કામ કરી શકું છું.

આવા જ ડીમ્પલ બેન કેટલી બધી ચિંતા બાળકો અને સાથે સાથે અમારી પણ કરે. thanks સાથે છો એના માટે.. શરૂઆતમાં vssm ટીમમાંથી છાયાબેન, શારદાબેન, ઇલાબેન, અમીબેન સૌની કેટલી દોડાદોડી. તો રશ્મિનભાઈ, પ્રદીપભાઈ ફ્રેન્ડ્સ ઓફ vssm, પ્રજ્ઞેશભાઈ, કિરીટભાઈ, નમ્રતાબેન, ધીરેન્દ્રભાઈ, સતસંગ પરિવાર વગેરે જેવા વહાલાં સ્વજનોનીની સતત સાથે હોવાની હુંફથી જ આ કામ થઇ શક્યું. સૌ પ્રત્યે કૃતજ્ઞતા વ્યક્ત કરું છું.

ગઈ કાલે અચાનક મને ખુરશીમાં બેસાડીને બાલદોસ્તોએ અને સ્કુલ જઈ રહેલી અમારી દીકરીઓએ ફોટો સેશન કરાવ્યું જે જોઈ શકાય છે.

The hostel living in all the VSSM managed hostel facilities is targeted to build an environment of learning, community living, inculcating the universal human values in the children staying with us. The daily schedule is designed in such a way that children work to clean their surroundings and their living spaces, perform community prayers, the elder children have to take care of the needs of the younger ones, studying and picking up other co-curricular activities…All these daily activities help them become better students and citizens. 

In the VSSM managed and ‘Giant Group of Central Mumbai and Aarti Foundation supported Kalrav girls hostel at Doliya 93 girls are staying and continuing with their education. These girls are between the ages of 5 to 11 years. On 2nd October they took up the task of cleaning the main road just outside their hostel premises. This road is the Rajkot-Ahmedabad road. The cleanliness drive was to mark Gandhi Jayanti and remember the principles Gandhi practiced and preached. The Baldosts of the facility Vandana, Jalpa, Harshad who are taking remarkable care of this children designed this initiative to put into practice what the children  have been learning in their books. 

Such small yet thoughtful initiative go a long way……one has to make very conscious efforts to ensure that these universally relevant principles that Gandhiiji preached aren’t forgotten by the future generations. With all our efforts we make sure that such initiatives do not remain limited to special days but are followed as a way of life by our children…

Vssm સંચાલિત અને ‘જાયન્ટ ગ્રુપ ઓફ સેન્ટ્રલ મુંબઈ’ અને ‘આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન’ના આર્થીક સહયોગથી સુરેન્દ્રનગર જીલ્લાના ડોળિયા ગામમાં કલરવ કન્યા છાત્રાલય ચાલે છે. વિચરતી જાતિની ૯૩ દીકરીઓ આ છાત્રાલયમાં રહીને ભણે છે. હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા આવતી દીકરીઓની ઉંમર ૫ વર્ષથી લઈને ૧૫ વર્ષ સુધીની છે. આમ તો આ દીકરીઓ રોજ પોતાની હોસ્ટેલ અને એની આસપાસના પ્રાંગણની સફાઈ કરે જ છે પણ આજે ગાંધીજયંતિ નિમિતે ખાસ હોસ્ટેલ બહારનો રાજકોટ –અમદાવાદ તરફનો રસ્તો એમણે સાફ કર્યો.. દીકરીઓ ગાંધીજીના જીવનને એમના મુલ્યોને સમજે એ માટે બાલદોસ્ત વંદના, જલ્પા, હર્ષદ એમને પુસ્તકની સાથે સાથે પ્રેકટીશમાં પણ ગાંધીના મુલ્યોને શીખવવા કોશિશ કરે છે.. નવી અને યુવા પેઢી ગાંધીના મુલ્યો સમજશે તો ભવિષ્યમાં હિંસા રહિત વિશ્વ જોઈ શકાશે.. જાણું છું આ ખુબ મોટી આશા છે.. કેટલાકના મતે અશક્ય. પણ સ્વપ્ન તો જોઈ જ શકાય અને એ સ્વપ્નને સાકાર કરવાનું પોતાના ઘરથી કરી જ શકાય.. અને એટલે જ vssm પરિવાર ગાંધીને સમજી એમના માર્ગે આગળ વધે એ કોશિશમાં અમે સતત લાગ્યા રહ્યા છીએ.. વળી આ કાર્ય ફક્ત ૨ જી ઓક્ટોબરે જ યાદ આવે અને એ થાય એ અજુગતું લાગે. આ નિરંતર પ્રક્રિયાની જેમ ચાલવું જોઈએ. vssm પરિવાર ગાંધી મુલ્યોને સમજી એને સમજદારી પૂર્વક અપનાવે એવી શ્રદ્ધા...

The  June of 2015 saw the opening of a nomadic girls hostel right behind the VSSM office in Ahmedabad.   This hostel has girls from extremely vulnerable and marginalised nomadic communities staying with it. While they stay in the hostel here, they school at one of the leading schools of Ahmedabad,  the H. B. Kapadia High School. On 26th January the H.B. Kapadia Group had organised an art competition for the students of various H. B. Kapadia schools spread across Ahmedabad city. 7 girls from VSSM hostel also participated in this competition that was held at the Alpha One Mall. 

By participating in such events the girls are exposed to a different learning environment and acquire exposure that is required for acclimatising themselves to living in a environment that differs from the one they have lived in until now….

We are grateful to all those who have been helpful in helping these girls realise their dreams…

vssm સંચાલિત હોસ્ટેલની દીકરીઓએ ચિત્ર સ્પર્ધામાં ભાગ લીધો.

vssm દ્વારા અમદાવાદમાં વિચરતી જાતિની દીકરીઓ માટે હોસ્ટેલ શરુ કરવામાં આવી છે. જેમાં ૩૫ દીકરીઓ ભણે છે. આ દીકરીઓ અમદાવાદની ખુબ જ સારી કહી શકાય એવી એચ.બી. કાપડિયા સ્કૂલમાં અભ્યાસ કરી રહી છે. એચ.બી. કાપડિયા ગ્રુપની અમદાવાદમાં ઘણી સ્કૂલો આવેલી છે. આ તમામ સ્કૂલોના વિદ્યાર્થીઓ માટે આલ્ફા મોલમાં ચિત્ર સ્પર્ધાનું આયોજન કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું. જેમાં આપણી હોસ્ટેલની ૭ દીકરીઓએ ભાગ લીધો હતો.

આ દીકરીઓનું મહત્તમ એક્સપોઝર થાય અને એ પોતાના ભાવી માટે સ્વપ્ન જોતી થાય એ કરવાનું અમે કરી રહ્યા છીએ. સમાજના સૌ આ કામમાં સહયોગ કરી રહ્યાં છે જે માટે અમે એ સૌના આભારી છીએ.

A constant wandering lifestyle the nomadic communities lead, teamed up with drudgery, joblessness, food scarcity makes  them susceptible to a number of undesired habits. One of it is addiction to tobacco, smoking and in certain cases alcohol. These addictions are rampant amongst men, women and children as well…addictions starting at such young age means high instances of cancer and other fatal illnesses. In the last couple of years VSSM has initiated a drive, in all the settlements it works, to make the community members aware of the deadly side effects of tobacco and likes and motivate  them to give up their addictions.

The Vavdi village of Rajkot district has settlement of nomadic families from Vaanza (Vansfoda), Salat and  Devipujak communities. The families earn their living working as labourers. Extreme physical work means these individuals  are addicted to some or the other kind tobacco products. The addictions weren’t   limited to the adults but the children too were addicted to tobacco. The parents also had not qualms about the children being out of school, loitering around and picking up such fatal addictions. Our team member Kanubhai is the Baldost in this settlement and responsible for creating an environment for learning in this community. Learning was limited to the text book education but about issues that affected their life and well-being. Kanubhai preached a lot to this families on the ill effects of tobacco, but hardly any one paid heed, they would restrain from consuming tobacco in presence of Kanubhai but once he was gone it was back to the old business!!! The children also followed what their parents did.

Fed up the insensitivity showed by the adults, Kanubhai gave up advising them but continued doing so to the children. He asked them to begin saving the money they took from their parents to buy tobacco, gutkha, beetle nut etc., from the saved money they can but the things they want he explained. The children did not digest the idea in initially and it took lot of coaxing from Kanubhai to get his message across. Gradually the children began saving the money with Kanubhai, who would talk about the amount saved by each child and the progress made, within the students group. This had a huge impact amongst the students as it enticed  the non-savers to begin saving from their pocket money.

On the 9th of September, I had this opportunity to visit Eklavya Balghar, where the children shared the news that during the past 2 months, 32 children had saved Rs. 2238. When I asked what would they like to buy from their savings the kids promptly replied “school bag, school dresses, books…..” as much as a delight the reply was a result of relentless efforts put by Kanubhai.

As we discussed this development with parents they were absolutely surprised to hear the development. We hope that parents, in this case,  take a lesson from their children, understand the importance of savings and give up their deadly addiction to tobacco in its various avatars….

રાજકોટના વાવડી ગામમાં વિચરતી જાતિમાંના વાંઝા(વાંસફોડા), સલાટ, દેવીપૂજક પરિવારો રહે છે. આ પરિવારો છૂટક મજૂરી કરીને પોતાનો ગુજારો કરે. વસાહતમાં વ્યસનનું પ્રમાણ ખુબ. મા –બાપ તો વ્યસન કરે અને એમને જોઇને બાળકો પણ કરે. વળી એક પણ બાળક શાળામાં જાય નહિ અને બાળકો ભણતા નથી એ સંદર્ભે પરિવારોને પણ કોઈ ક્ષોભ નહિ. આ વસાહતમાં બાળકોને ભણાવવાનું કામ vssmના કાર્યકર – બાલદોસ્ત કનુભાઇએ શરુ કર્યું. એમણે માં-બાપને વ્યસન બાબતે સમજાવવાની ખુબ કોશિશ કરી પણ બધા માને નહિ. હા કનુભાઈની હાજરીમાં તમાકુના ખાય અને બીડી ના પીવે પણ એમની ગેરહાજરીમાં બધું ચાલે. બાળકો પણ મા-બાપની જેમ જ.

કંટાળીને કનુભાઈએ માં-બાપ સાથે માથાકૂટ કરવાનું માંડી વાળ્યું પણ બાળકોને સમજાવવાનું ચાલુ રાખ્યું. સોપારી, પાન-મસાલામાટે માં-બાપ જે પૈસા આપે એની બચત કરવા કહ્યું અને એ બચતમાંથી બાળકોને જે વસ્તુ જોઈએ એ લાવી આપવાની એમ નક્કી થયું. બાળકોએ ધીમે ધીમે ઘરમાંથી વાપરવા માટે આપતાં પૈસા કનુભાઈને જમા કરાવવાનું શરુ કર્યું. આમ તો શરૂઆતમાં બાળકોની તૈયાર નહોતી  પણ કનુભાઈએ બે બાળકોને બરાબર સમજાવ્યા અને એ બાળકોની રોજેરોજની બચત શરુ થઈ એટલે કનુભાઈએ બધા બાળકો વચ્ચે એ બાળકોની બચત કહેવાની શરુ કરી અને ચમત્કાર થવા માંડ્યો એક પછી એક બાળક બચતમાં જોડાવવા માંડ્યું. 

તા.૯-૯-૧૫ના રોજ આ બાળકોના એકલવ્ય બાલઘરની મુલાકાતે જવાનું થયું ત્યારે ૩૨ બાળકોએ છેલ્લા બે મહિનામાં કરેલી બચત રૂ.૨૨૩૮ની વિગતવાર માહિતી આપી. બચતમાંથી શું લાવશો એ અંગે જયારે બાળકોને પૂછ્યું, તો એમણે કહ્યું, સ્કુલ ડ્રેસ.. કેવી અદભુત વાત..

બાળકોના વાલીઓ સાથે એમના બાળકોએ કરેલી બચત અંગે વાત કરી. વાલીઓને ખુબ નવાઈ લાગી.. આશા છે કે, બાળકોની બચત જોઇને વાલીઓ પણ બચતને સમજતા થાય.
