Ganga lives in Surendranagar’s Doodhrej.

The school is a little away from her settlement. The parents remain at work throughout the day. There was no one to bring her to and from the school. But they wanted their daughter to study. However, from the 7th standard Ganga started getting teased and harassed while commuting to school and back. The fear of these anti-social elements resulted in her refusing to go to school. Like all parents,  Ganga’s parents also wanted her to have a better future hence,  they wanted her to continue with her schooling. They shared their dilemma with VSSM’s  Harshadbhai. This is how Ganga reached our hostel in Ahmedabad.

The guidance and mentoring of VSSM’s education team consisting of Dimpleben, Vanita, Kokila ironed away all the academic deficiencies Ganga had when she first arrived at the hostel. Initially, for the fear of being harassed, she hesitated going back to her village.  The once shy and fearful girl is now a confident 10th grader.

“I wish to have a job and build a house of my own when I grow up,” she shares.

The safety a house provides might have made her aspire for one, we wish and pray her aspirations to turn into reality.

“Once the schools reopen, along with Ganga,  I want to send my other two daughters to study at VSSM.” Ganga’s mother had mentioned when I was in Surendranagar recently and decided to visit her.

Such good intents are always welcome…

ગંગા... સુરેન્દ્રનગરના દૂધરેજમાં રહે. 

સાતમાં ધોરણમાં ભણતી એ વેળા એની છેડતીના પ્રશ્નો થવા માંડ્યા. મૂળ એના છાપરાંથી નિશાળ દૂર. મા -બાપ બેય મજૂરી કરે. નિશાળે લેવા મૂકવા જવાનું એ કરી ન શકે. પણ બેઉની લાગણી પોતાની દીકરી ભણે એવી. 

આવામાં ગંગા અસમાજિક તત્વોના ડરથી નિશાળ જવાની ના કહેવા માંડી. પોતે ભણ્યા નથી એટલે આજે દુઃખોનો પાર નથી. દીકરી નહીં ભણે તો એની દશાય પોતાના જેવી..એમણે આ મૂંઝવણ અમારા કાર્યકર હર્ષદને કહી ને ગંગા આવી અમદાવાદ અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં. 

ભણવામાં નબળી પણ અમારા ડિમ્પલબેન, વનીતા, કોકીલા વગેરેની મહેનતથી ધીમે ધીમે એ બધુ શીખવા માંડી. હાલ દસમુ ધોરણ ભણે. શરૃઆતમાં વેકેશનમાં કોઈ હેરાન કરશે તો એવો ડર એને સતાવતો. પણ હવે એ આત્મવિશ્વાસથી ભરપૂર છે. 

'મોટા થઈ ને નોકરી કરીશ અને પોતાનું પાક્કુ ઘર બનાવીશ' એવું ગંગા કહે. 

ઘર બનાવવાની વાત કદાચ સુરક્ષીત વાતાવરણના પરીપેક્ષમાં એ કરતી હશે.. પણ એની આ ભાવના કુદરત પૂર્ણ કરાવે.

થોડા સમય પહેલાં સુરેન્દ્રનગર જવાનું થયું ત્યારે ગંગાને ખાસ મળવા ગઈ.. એની મા કહે છે, 'આ નિશાળો ખુલે એટલે ગંગા ભેગી મારી બીજી બે દિકરીઓને પણ તમારી પાહે ભણવા મુકી દેવી છે.. 

'આ તો મંગલ વાત વધાવવાની જ હોય ને...

‘Football is a game boys play,’ was the notion most of my generation and ones before me have grown up believing. However, since I have been active in sports all my life it was difficult to comprehend that games can be gender specific!! Things have changed considerably with girls excelling at almost all sports and other fields.

Our fluttering little butterflies, our girls have been receiving football training  for almost a year now. An organisation named Kahani has been training them free of cost.

I remember the first day of their training. The dress code called for shorts and t-shirts. The girls just couldn’t convince  themselves to wear shorts as it showed their legs and they weren’t comfortable in the dress. It is also the cultural taboo in communities across India and most girls are refrained from wearing revealing clothing. Our Dimpleben, who nurtures these girls like a mother tried convincing them but none relented and requested for a legging that they wore underneath the shorts.

It took  10 months to step out of this shyness. The girls are now rough and tough like any sportspersons. No one dare take their name. If anyone harasses any of the girls staying in the hostel, these girls turn in to tigresses ready to pounce upon anyone. There are instances of this too. Will share it some other time.

The girls have remained persistent with their training and improving the game. As a result, Neha and Kashish were selected for a tournament held by Gujarat State Football Association. The team Neha and Kashish represented stood second in this state level tournament. The medals they brought back home had inspired other girls to work hard on their game and try to become part of a team.

It is often said that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’… the football training of our girls wouldn’t have been possible if Chaturbhai aka Chaturkaka did not bring them to the coaching ground on time, every time. In absence of Chaturbhai, Harishbhai takes up the responsibility.

The girls are putting lot of  hardwork, giving up their sleeping hours during weekends to be able to train well.

We wish more girls join the game, train well and make their parents proud.

પતંગિયા જેવી અમારી દીકરીઓ...

ફૂટબોલની રમતમાં ઝળકી...

ફૂટબોલ રમવાનો ઈજારો છોકરાઓને એવું નાનપણમાં સાંભળેલું. જો કે હું પોતે રમતવીર હોવાના નાતે એ વખતે કોઈ પણ રમતમાં એકલા છોકરાઓનો ઈજારો હોવાનું પડકારરૃપ લાગતું. અમે કેમ ના કરી શકીએ એવું એ વખતે થતું. ખેર આજે તો દરેક ક્ષેત્રમાં છોકરીઓ ઝળકી રહી છે.

અમારી હોસ્ટેલની તીતલીઓ ફૂટબોલ રમવાનું છેલ્લા બે વર્ષથી શીખી રહી હતી.

'#કહાની' સંસ્થા અમારી દીકરીઓને વિનામૂલ્યે તાલીમ આપવાનું કરે.

પહેલીવાર તાલીમમાં ગઈ ત્યારે ટીશર્ટ નીચે એકલી શોર્ટ તો કેવી રીતે પહેરાય. એટલે આખો પગ ઢંકાય એવી કાળી લેંઘી પહેરી ને ઉપર શોર્ટસ. આ દીકરીઓ પર માની જેમ હેત વર્ષાવનાર ડીમ્પલબેન ઘણું સમજાવે કે આમાં તમને રમવું ના ફાવે પણ એકલી શોર્ટ પહેરતા શરમ આવતી.

દસ મહિના લાગ્યા આ શરમ કાઢતા. હવે પાક્કી સ્પોર્ટસ ગર્લ બની ગઈ છે. એકદમ રફ એન્ડ ટફ. કોઈ નામ ના લઈ શકે એવી.

હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતી કોઈપણ દીકરીની કોઈએ છેડતી કર્યાનું અમારી હવે તીતલી નહીં કહુ પણ વાધણ કહીશ, આ વાઘણોને ખબર પડે તો તો સામેવાળાનું આવી જ બને... એનો સરસ કિસ્સો છે પણ એ ફરીલખીશ. આવી બહાદુર દીકરીઓ હોસ્ટેલનો આખો કારભાર સંભાળે છે.

ફરી #ફૂટબોલ પર આવું,

દીકરીઓ સારુ રમાય એ માટે ઘણી મહેનત કરે. જેના પરિણામે ફૂટબોલ રમતી બધી દીકરીઓમાંથી નેહા અને કશીશની પસંદગી ગુજરાત સ્ટેટ ફૂટબોલ એસોસીયેશન દ્વારા યોજાતી સ્પર્ધા માટે થઈ. આખા ગુજરાતની ફૂટબોલ ટીમ સાથે આ દીકરીઓ એમની ટીમ સાથે હરીફરીફાઈમાં ઉતરી અને બંને દીકરીઓની ટીમે બીજો નંબર મેળવ્યો.

નેહા અને કશીશના ગળાના મેડલ જોઈને એની સાથે ફૂટબોલ રમતી બીજી દીકરીઓએ પણ હવેની હરીફાઈમાં પોતાને પણ મેડલ મળે એ માટે કમર કશી છે.

આ દીકરીઓને આ સ્તરે પહોંચાડવા દરરોજ ફૂટબોલ રમવા માટે ફૂટબોલ ગ્રાઉન્ડ પર પહોંચાડવાનું દીકરીઓ જેમને ચતુરકાકા કહે એ કરે. ચતુરભાઈની ગેરહાજરીમાં હરીશભાઈ આ જવાબદારી સંભાળે.

બીજી દીકરીઓ રવીવારે આરામ કરતી હોય ત્યારે ફૂટબોલની ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે એ ટીમ સવારે વહેલા ઊઠી રમવા જાય..

જીંદગીમાં કંઈક મેળવવું છે એટલે એ માટે મહેનત તો કરવી જ રહી..

હજુ વધુ દીકરીઓ ફૂટબોલ રમતી થાય અને એમના માતા પિતાનું નામ રોશન કરે એવી અભ્યર્થના...
