Dexterous skills  and performing arts - in the past these  were the two hallmark features that one would associate with the  nomadic communities.  Sadly, with the advent of modern means of entertainment and mechanised productions,  the value and demand for these skills and arts have almost disappeared. There is no doubt that the skill these communities possess are priceless  and such arts and crafts need to be nurtured and promoted.

VSSM has been striving to preserve this precious inheritance. We have tried to give a contemporary touch to  the Bhavai theatre form, train and equip the artists with better musical instruments, regularly host their performances and much more. While the efforts in the direction continue it is also important that the current generation of these communities remain in-tune with their glorious legacy. 

Thus, while they are staying with us in VSSM operated hostels we try to encourage them into musical performance during the prayer  time and other celebrations in the hostels. The hostels prove to be their learning grounds. 

Recently, during the  Kala Utsav event organised by the  State Government of  Gujarat , two students staying with the VSSM managed and Aarti Foundation supported Vatsalya Hostel performed exceptionally well at the Ahmedabad district level and won laurels for their school. Master Pravin Palali won stood first in the ‘child-poet’ category while Master Vijay Nat bagged the first price in Dholak performance. The received certificates and cash price each. 

Such instances help in bringing back the confidence in the kids as well as strengthens our belief that we are on the right path. A special thank you  to our  Bal-Dosts Valji and Hairkishan for working tirelessly with these children and mentoring them with so much of love and care!!!

વિચરતી જાતિનો અદભૂત કલાવારસો હતો. એક સમય હતો જ્યારે તેમની કલાની ચોતરફ બોલબાલા હતી. તે પછી નટના ખેલ હોય કે ભવાયાની ભવાઈ. પણ સમાજ વિકાસ થયો તેમાં આ સમુદાયોની પરંપરાગત કલાઓ પણ વિસરાતી ગઈ. VSSM આ સમુદાયોની પરંપરાગત કલાઓને નવા સ્વરૃપમાં લોકો સમક્ષ મુકવાનું કરવા ધારે છે પણ આ ઘણી મહેનત માંગતું કામ સાથે આર્થિક રીતે પણ ખાસા એવા ખર્ચે થનારું કામ છે. પણ તે કરવાનું છે એ નક્કી.

ત્યાં સુધી આ સમુદાયની જે પઢી આપણી પાસે રહીને ભણી રહી છે તે તેમની ગાયન અને વાદન શૈલીમાં આગળ એવા પ્રયત્નો VSSM દ્વારા થઈ રહ્યા છે. 

VSSM સંચાલિત અને આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન તેમજ સમાજના સહયોગથી ચાલતી વાત્સલ્ય હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા બાળકો નિયમિત સાંજે પ્રાર્થનામાં પોતાને ગમતા ભજનો ઢોલક, ખંજરી જેવા વાદ્યો વગાડીને ગાય છે. આ તેમની પ્રયોગશાળા છે.

રાજ્ય સરકાર દ્વારા આયોજીત કલાઉત્સવમાં અમદાવાદ જિલ્લામાં વાત્સલ્ય હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા બાળકોમાંથી પ્રવિણ પલાણીનો બાળકવી તરીકે તેમજ વિજય નટનો ઢોલક વાદનમાં પ્રથમ નંબર આવ્યો. બંને બાળકોનું જિલ્લા કક્ષાની આ સ્પર્ધામાં સન્માન થયું અને રોકડ ઈનામ પણ આપવામાં આવ્યા.

વિચરતી જાતિની ભાવી પેઢી તેમની પરંપરાગત આવડતોને આગળ ધપાવે તેવી ઈચ્છાને ઉપરોક્ત બંને વિદ્યાર્થીઓએ અનુમોદન આપ્યું. બંને વિદ્યાર્થીઓને તેમના ભાવી માટે ખુબ શુભેચ્છા અને તેમની પાછળ મહેનત કરવાવાળા બાલદોસ્ત વાલજી, હરકીશનને થેક્યુ...

10 years ago when we began working with the nomadic communities of Gujarat we realised that  the challenges they faced were immense, we were absolutely clueless on how to begin, from where to begin, the lives of hundreds and thousands  of these families was in absolute shatters. Right from establishing them as citizens of this country to addressing their need for housing, livelihood, education, health and restoring their dignity everything had to addressed. We took baby steps and with perseverance we tackled one issue at a time. 10 years down the line we have made significant progress and much has changed for the better, but one issue that is Education of the nomadic children is a biggest challenge we face requiring very intensive efforts. 

From bridge schools in tents to hostels in rented premises, enrolling children in prominent education institutions across Gujarat, VSSM has made efforts in all these directions in its mission to educate the children of some of the most marginalised and extremely poor communities of this country.  But what we required was a premises and institute that addresses the specific needs of nomadic children, such children who have never lived settled lives and socialised in that manner. VSSM has had contemplated such facility but funds were always an issue. Mumbai based ‘Jain Yuvak Sangh’ helped us ease the need of funds by making a generous donation of Rs. 65 lakhs for the construction of an education enclave for the children of nomads. The land required for the same has been donated by ‘Sadvichar Parivar.’

vssm દ્વારા વિચરતી જાતિના બાળકોના અભ્યાસ માટે નિવાસી સંકુલ બનાવવા માટે ભુમીભુજન યોજાઈ ગયું.

વિચરતા સમુદાયના પરિચયમાં આવવાનું થયું ત્યારે એ લોકો જે મુશ્કેલી વેઠી રહ્યાં હતાં એ જોઇને જ હેરાન થઇ જવાયું હતું. સમસ્યાઓ તો ગણ્યા ગણાય નહિ અને છાબડીમાં માય નહિ એટલી. ધીમે ધીમે બધું સમજાતું ગયું અને ઉકેલો સુઝતા ગયા એમ એમ આગળ વધતાં ગયા. નાગરિક તરીકેની ઓળખ, ઘર, રોજગાર અને શિક્ષણની દિશામાં નોંધપાત્ર કહી શકાય એવું કામ થઇ રહ્યું છે. 

પણ શિક્ષણમાં જેટલું કરીએ છીએ એના કરતા પણ વધારે કામની જરૂર હતી. વિચરતી જાતિઓની વસાહતોમાં જ તંબુશાળા અને ત્યારબાદ ભાડા પર હોસ્ટેલ શરુ કરી. આ બધામાં આ સમુદાયના બાળકોને અનુરૂપ શિક્ષણ સંકુલ થાય તે અત્યંત જરૂરી લાગતું હતું. મુંબઈમાં vssmના કામોમાં સદાય સહાયભૂત થતાં ‘શ્રી મુંબઈ જૈન યુવક સંઘ’ના ટ્રસ્ટીગણે રૂ.૬૫ લાખ બાળકોના શિક્ષણ અર્થે બાંધવાની થતી હોસ્ટેલ માટે એકત્રિત કરી આપ્યાં અને ‘સદવિચાર પરિવારે’ હોસ્ટેલ માટે જમીન આપી. આ જમીનનું ભૂમિપૂજન તા.૨૦ ફેબ્રુઆરીના રોજ ઉવારસદ મુકામે યોજાઈ ગયું.. 

બસ વિચરતી જાતિના બાળકો માટે સુંદર નિવાસી શાળાનું સ્વપ્ન ઝટ પૂરું થાય એવી પ્રભુ પ્રાર્થના..

One of the major reasons for the children of nomadic communities to be out of the mainstream school system is of access to the education system. Most of the nomadic settlements are away from the villages and since they do not enjoy a legal status the settlements also remain devoid of any basic infrastructure facilities. Accessing power, water, road, house, health, education are the challenges the residents of these settlements face on daily basis. 

One such settlement in Surendranagar’s Dudhrej has large concentration of nomads. The children need to walk long distance to reach the government school in the nearby village. Apart from the distance the other grave concern is of crossing the main highway that runs between the settlement and the village. As a result the parents were never prepared to send their children to school. In 2008 with the support of Janpath and GFC, VSSM initiated a Balghar - Bridge school in the settlement. It was first ever experiment of educating the children of a nomadic settlement. The challenge was to acclimatise the children with the process of learning in a structured environment. The Baldost of the settlement Harshad did a commendable and inspirational job with igniting the passion for learning amount the children and sensitising the parents towards the need to educate their children. Since the number of children was huge a proper school with qualified teachers was an absolute must. VSSM requested for a government school in the settlement itself. 3 years ago a government school was sanctioned in the settlement. The school began functioning in a rented premises the structure of which  was in an extremely appealing condition. If the school was to function it required a proper building. The Principal of Dudhrej government school and Harshad worked really hard devotion lot of time to ensure that the school had a new building,  as a result of their untiring efforts the government sanctioned  land for school and a new building now stands on the land. 

The new premises for Dudhrej settlement school was dedicated to the community in an program organised on 9th December 2015. VSSM’s  Harshad Vyas was applauded and honoured for his dedicated efforts during this opening ceremony, it was indeed a proud moment for VSSM  to have such gems in its team.  VSSM and the nomadic communities are thankful to the government for the new school.

સુરેન્દ્રનગરના દૂધરેજમાં વિચરતી જાતિની ઘણી મોટી વસાહત આવેલી છે. આ વસાહતથી શાળાનું અંતર વધારે હોવાના કારણે અને શાળા અને વસાહત વચ્ચે હાઇવે હોવાના કારણે પરિવારો પોતાનાં બાળકોને શાળામાં મોકલવા તૈયાર નહિ. vssm દ્વારા જનપથ અને GFCની મદદથી આ વસાહતમાં ૨૦૦૮માં બાલઘર શરુ કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું અને બાળકોને ૩ કલાક ભણાવવાનું કામ બાલદોસ્ત હર્ષદે બખૂબીથી નિભાવ્યું. બાલઘરની સાથે સાથે આ બાળકો માટે તેમની વસાહતમાં જ શાળા બને એ માટે vssmએ પ્રયત્નો કર્યા. ૩ વર્ષ પહેલાં સરકાર દ્વારા ભાડાના મકાનમાં શાળા શરુ થઇ પણ મકાન ખુબ જર્જરિત હતું એટલે પોતાનું મકાન બને એ જરૂરી હતું. દૂધરેજ શાળાના આચાર્ય અને બાલદોસ્ત હર્ષદે શાળાનું પોતાનું મકાન બને એ માટે ખુબ મહેનત કરી જેના પરિણામે શાળા માટે સરકાર દ્વારા જમીન આપવામાં આવી અને શાળાનું સુંદર મકાન ત્યાં ઉભું થયું. 

મકાનનો લોકાર્પણ કાર્યક્રમ તા.૯ ડીસેમ્બર ૨૦૧૫ન રોજ યોજાઈ ગયો જેમાં vssmના કાર્યકર અને શાળાનું મકાન ઉભું થાય એ માટે અથાગ મહેનત કરનાર હર્ષદ વ્યાસનું સન્માન થયું. vssm અને વિચરતી જાતિ શાળા માટે સરકારના આભાર વ્યક્ત કરે છે. સાથે સાથે હર્ષદ જેવા કાર્યકર હોવાનો ગર્વ અનુભવીએ છીએ.. વધારેને વધારે લોકોને મદદરૂપ થઇ શકીએ એવી ખેવના સાથે શાળાના ઉદઘાટન સંદર્ભે છાપામાં આવેલા સમાચાર...

A constant wandering lifestyle the nomadic communities lead, teamed up with drudgery, joblessness, food scarcity makes  them susceptible to a number of undesired habits. One of it is addiction to tobacco, smoking and in certain cases alcohol. These addictions are rampant amongst men, women and children as well…addictions starting at such young age means high instances of cancer and other fatal illnesses. In the last couple of years VSSM has initiated a drive, in all the settlements it works, to make the community members aware of the deadly side effects of tobacco and likes and motivate  them to give up their addictions.

The Vavdi village of Rajkot district has settlement of nomadic families from Vaanza (Vansfoda), Salat and  Devipujak communities. The families earn their living working as labourers. Extreme physical work means these individuals  are addicted to some or the other kind tobacco products. The addictions weren’t   limited to the adults but the children too were addicted to tobacco. The parents also had not qualms about the children being out of school, loitering around and picking up such fatal addictions. Our team member Kanubhai is the Baldost in this settlement and responsible for creating an environment for learning in this community. Learning was limited to the text book education but about issues that affected their life and well-being. Kanubhai preached a lot to this families on the ill effects of tobacco, but hardly any one paid heed, they would restrain from consuming tobacco in presence of Kanubhai but once he was gone it was back to the old business!!! The children also followed what their parents did.

Fed up the insensitivity showed by the adults, Kanubhai gave up advising them but continued doing so to the children. He asked them to begin saving the money they took from their parents to buy tobacco, gutkha, beetle nut etc., from the saved money they can but the things they want he explained. The children did not digest the idea in initially and it took lot of coaxing from Kanubhai to get his message across. Gradually the children began saving the money with Kanubhai, who would talk about the amount saved by each child and the progress made, within the students group. This had a huge impact amongst the students as it enticed  the non-savers to begin saving from their pocket money.

On the 9th of September, I had this opportunity to visit Eklavya Balghar, where the children shared the news that during the past 2 months, 32 children had saved Rs. 2238. When I asked what would they like to buy from their savings the kids promptly replied “school bag, school dresses, books…..” as much as a delight the reply was a result of relentless efforts put by Kanubhai.

As we discussed this development with parents they were absolutely surprised to hear the development. We hope that parents, in this case,  take a lesson from their children, understand the importance of savings and give up their deadly addiction to tobacco in its various avatars….

રાજકોટના વાવડી ગામમાં વિચરતી જાતિમાંના વાંઝા(વાંસફોડા), સલાટ, દેવીપૂજક પરિવારો રહે છે. આ પરિવારો છૂટક મજૂરી કરીને પોતાનો ગુજારો કરે. વસાહતમાં વ્યસનનું પ્રમાણ ખુબ. મા –બાપ તો વ્યસન કરે અને એમને જોઇને બાળકો પણ કરે. વળી એક પણ બાળક શાળામાં જાય નહિ અને બાળકો ભણતા નથી એ સંદર્ભે પરિવારોને પણ કોઈ ક્ષોભ નહિ. આ વસાહતમાં બાળકોને ભણાવવાનું કામ vssmના કાર્યકર – બાલદોસ્ત કનુભાઇએ શરુ કર્યું. એમણે માં-બાપને વ્યસન બાબતે સમજાવવાની ખુબ કોશિશ કરી પણ બધા માને નહિ. હા કનુભાઈની હાજરીમાં તમાકુના ખાય અને બીડી ના પીવે પણ એમની ગેરહાજરીમાં બધું ચાલે. બાળકો પણ મા-બાપની જેમ જ.

કંટાળીને કનુભાઈએ માં-બાપ સાથે માથાકૂટ કરવાનું માંડી વાળ્યું પણ બાળકોને સમજાવવાનું ચાલુ રાખ્યું. સોપારી, પાન-મસાલામાટે માં-બાપ જે પૈસા આપે એની બચત કરવા કહ્યું અને એ બચતમાંથી બાળકોને જે વસ્તુ જોઈએ એ લાવી આપવાની એમ નક્કી થયું. બાળકોએ ધીમે ધીમે ઘરમાંથી વાપરવા માટે આપતાં પૈસા કનુભાઈને જમા કરાવવાનું શરુ કર્યું. આમ તો શરૂઆતમાં બાળકોની તૈયાર નહોતી  પણ કનુભાઈએ બે બાળકોને બરાબર સમજાવ્યા અને એ બાળકોની રોજેરોજની બચત શરુ થઈ એટલે કનુભાઈએ બધા બાળકો વચ્ચે એ બાળકોની બચત કહેવાની શરુ કરી અને ચમત્કાર થવા માંડ્યો એક પછી એક બાળક બચતમાં જોડાવવા માંડ્યું. 

તા.૯-૯-૧૫ના રોજ આ બાળકોના એકલવ્ય બાલઘરની મુલાકાતે જવાનું થયું ત્યારે ૩૨ બાળકોએ છેલ્લા બે મહિનામાં કરેલી બચત રૂ.૨૨૩૮ની વિગતવાર માહિતી આપી. બચતમાંથી શું લાવશો એ અંગે જયારે બાળકોને પૂછ્યું, તો એમણે કહ્યું, સ્કુલ ડ્રેસ.. કેવી અદભુત વાત..

બાળકોના વાલીઓ સાથે એમના બાળકોએ કરેલી બચત અંગે વાત કરી. વાલીઓને ખુબ નવાઈ લાગી.. આશા છે કે, બાળકોની બચત જોઇને વાલીઓ પણ બચતને સમજતા થાય.

VSSM’s efforts has kindled the desire to learn amongst the nomadic children.

In the year 2005 when we began working with and for the nomadic communities of Gujarat we were clueless on where  do we start from!! The issues these communities faced were so many that nothing but questions stared back at us!!! However, as we embarked upon our journey, things gradually began to fall in place. VSSM team, a collective of focused, dedicated and extremely hard working individuals, came together. Such sedulous  team meant gravest of issues getting resolved and VSSM inning closer to achieving its mission. 

Education and the lack of it is the severest challenge the nomadic communities face. It is both the cause and effect of their dismal condition. The VSSM team was required to put in tremendous hard work to bring the children to school and cultivate an environment of learning within these communities. Along the hard work came unflinching support of the our very dear friends and well-wishers. The first programs focusing on education we began were of the Bridge Schools and Balghars, which later progressed into hostels.15 girls in a specially initiated Doliya Girls Hostel is how we began to now 180 children at the Doliya Hostel alone. Currently this  hostel is running at its full capacity. There are numerous children wishing to come ad study at Doliya but we have to refuse admission as it is virtually impossible to accommodate any more children at Doliya. 

We recently, on 10th September, paid a visit to the hostel. The children gave us a warm welcome. The special request they had for us this time was to arrange their two days trip to Ahmedabad!! 

We are grateful to ‘Giant Group of Central Mumbai’ and 'Aarti Foundation’ for their continued support towards the Doliya hostel. 

The urge for education amongst the children from nomadic communities has kindled and VSSM is working towards ensuring that by next year it is able to accommodate children all these children who are willing to stay in hostel and study further. We look forward to the continued support of our well-wishers in our efforts.

વિચરતી અને વિમુક્ત જાતીઓ સાથે કામ શરુ કર્યું ત્યારે કંઈ કેટલાંય પ્રશ્નો સામે હતાં. અમે હંમેશા એ પ્રશ્નો માટે કહેતાં,

ગણ્યા ગણાય નહિ ..

વીણ્યા વીણાય નહિ..

શરૂઆત ક્યાંથી કરવી એ પણ એક પ્રશ્ન હતો.. પણ ધીમેધીમે ઉકેલ સુઝતા ગયા અને આગળ વધતાં ગયા. vssmને સમાજ માટે કંઈ કરી છૂટવાની ભાવનાવાળી સુંદર ટીમ મળી અને કામ સરળ થવા માંડ્યા.

વિચરતી જાતિમાં શિક્ષણનું પ્રમાણ ખુબ ઓછું. ખુબ મહેનત કરીને આ જાતિઓના જે પડાવોમાં અમે કામ કરતા હતાં. એમાના કેટલાકમાં અમે vssm સાથે સંકળાયેલા શુભેચ્છક સ્વજનોની મદદથી તંબુ શાળા શરુ કરી અને એમાંથી જ હોસ્ટેલ પણ ઉભી થઇ. હોસ્ટેલની શરૂઆત ૧૫ દીકરીઓથી કરેલી આજે ૧૮૦ બાળકો ડોળીયાગામમાં આવેલી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણી રહ્યા છે. 

તા.૧૦ ઓક્ટોબરના રોજ આ બાળકોને મળવા જવાનું થયું. બધાએ ફૂલથી સ્વાગત કર્યું અને અમદાવાદમાં બે દિવસનો પ્રવાસ ગોઠવવાની માંગ પણ કરી. ડોળીયાની આ હોસ્ટેલમાં જેમનો આર્થિક સહયોગ મળે છે એવા ‘જાયન્ટ ગ્રુપ ઓફ સેન્ટ્રલ મુંબઈ’ અને ‘આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન’ના અમે આભારી છીએ એમના સહયોગ વગર આ થવું મુશ્કલે હતું. અત્યારે ઘણા બાળકોને હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા આવવાની ઈચ્છા છે પણ હવે હોસ્ટેલની કેપેસીટી નથી. આવતા વર્ષે આ બધા બાળકો માટે નવી વ્યવસ્થા ગોઠવાય એ માટેના અમે પ્રયત્ન કરીશું. સમાજ સહયોગ કરશે એવી શ્રદ્ધા છે.
