Irreplaceable Integrity and Love of Girls of VSSM Unnati Hostel

Mittal Patel talking to hostel girls
If you all are truly my girls find me Kinjaldidi’s watch within half-an-hour or else I will not eat my dinner!!!

This evening in the rush to go and pick up the girls from the school, Kinjal forgot her watch in the bathroom. Kinjal is a very polite and obedient child. Her mother Ramaben Chuvadiya Koli earns her living as a daily wage earning labour. The family doesn’t even have a pucca house to stay, “The house is bound to happen once my Kinjal finishes her education!!” she always says with a smile on her face. Ramaben saved some money from her daily earning to gift Kinjal a wrist watch worth Rs. 250. Don’t we all hold the gifts our parents give us as precious things ever? For Kinjal, this watch was the most precious thing ever, she would always wear it. Hell broke loose when Kinjal couldn’t trace her watch after she returned from picking up the girls from school.

I was in the office finishing my writing assignments. Kinjal came and stood behind my chair. This is a ritual. Whenever these girls have to tell or confess to  me they come and stand behind my chair so that we do not face each other, they speak up all they want to. While they are talking I am forbidden to turn around and look at them. I was waiting for Kinjal to speak up. Five minutes passed but there was no talking. Kinjal remained quiet. “What is the matter?” I inquired without turning my chair.

All the girls surrounded Mittal Patel to tell her about the watch
Kiara is always around the hostel, spending her time with the girls. She has made friends with a lot of girls her age hence she knew what was the matter. “Mumma, Kinjaldidi has lost her watch,” she let me know.

And Kinjal began crying profusely. “Didi, my mummy must have worked so hard to save money to buy me a watch. I consoled and assured her that we will find her watch.

At the hostel it was time for evening prayers. Everyone had gathered in the hall. I went and spoke about Kinjal’s watch, who had gifted it to her and quoted an instance when I had brought back a pen from a relative’s house without their knowledge and how I spent a sleepless night until I went there the next day and let them know that the pen was with me. They were so pleased with my honesty that I was gifted that pen.  They liked my truthfulness. Everyone likes honest people.

“I despise such behaviour from my girls. Hence, we need to find the watch within half-an-hour or else I will not eat my dinner. If you all love me find me the watch. If you fail to do that I will understand how much you all love me.” After the talk I returned to my office.

Within 10 minutes there was a sudden commotion in my office, all the girls rushed in  and gathered around my table (as seen in the picture), “Didi, didi we have found the watch.”

I was delighted to witness this honesty from my children.

The girl who found it was given an ovation. The rest were cautioned to not to point fingers at her.
I am glad these daughters of ours are learning to be honest humans first. I have decided to gift these 80 girls a wrist watch each for their honesty and truthfulness.

“Didi, now have your dinner. In fact eat twice as much today!” they joked.

These are precious moments I share with my girls. The clamour made Dashrath inquisitive, thank you for capturing these moments, Dashrath. And that is Kinjal in pink t-shirt.

How blessed I am to receive  such irreplaceable love and affection!! Thank you God for bestowing these opportunities!!

Hina Bhanushali…. may your tribe grow!!

Hina Bhanushali talking to Mittal Patel
The work and cause VSSM strives for has helped create a strong and dependable community of well-wishing friends and patrons. However, seldom do we come across young volunteers and donors who join us because they wish to be part of the process that enables change, who are willing to contribute their time, money  and energy to spread the joy and bring light in someone else’s life.

Recently we happen to meet Hina Bhanushali, a compassionate and wise 23 years old who thrives at the idea being helpful to others. Having relocated to Ahmedabad to prepare for examinations to  government job,  Hina lives by herself. Her father sends her a regular allowance to help meet her living expenses.

Hina is extremely mindful of her expenses and spends thriftily. The money she saves helps pay-off education expenses of three needful children. After spending some time in Ahmedabad she realized that if she wants to save more  she needs to live  in a place with low cost of living. The thought made her move to Gandhinagar. The relocation indeed helped her save more! Apart from helping with the education of 3 children Hina spent her increased savings on helping a barber set-up a small hair-cutting kiosk, distribute woolen pull-overs to the children in the government school in her hometown and assist a friend meet her educational expenses.

Hina, Mittal Patel and hostel girls with the cycle Hina has given
One day I received a message from Hina, on my Facebook account. She expressed her desire to meet me. We did meet up and talked to learn about her and VSSM’s work. After a few days of our meeting she calls up to tell me that she has managed to save Rs. 4000 and would want to donate that amount to the hostel, which she did.

A few days before Rakshabandhan she spoke to VSSM’s Dimpleben to understand more on the needs of the girls staying with our hostel. Dimpleben mentioned o n the need of a bicycle. A couple of days  later she comes over to VSSM with a bicycle for the girls. On Rakhi instead of clothes or any other gifts she asked for money from her brothers. Once the brothers learnt the reason behind this strange demand they  happily obliged.

“Didi, the clothes would eventually wear-off but my help to others will bring hope and twinkle in their life. I wish to go ahead  like you, didi. I haven’t been able to  decide between to be or not to be a government officer, I might opt out of that wish but I sure want to work like you,” Hina expressed.

“You should work towards becoming a government officer. We need officials like you amidst us.” I pushed her to not give up on something she has been working towards for so long.

“But can I come here and work with you, if I don’t like it there??”

“Of course, our doors are always open for you.” How could I not make such compassionate human part of VSSM!!

We hope that this desire to do better for fellow human beings never diminishes in Hina. We wish that she clears her exams and gets appointed as a government officer and goes on to bring change in lives of hundreds and thousands of individuals she would work for.

In the picture Hina with the girls she brought the cycle for.

Love of the Little Girls of Unnati Hostel

Mittal Patel with the litle ones of Unnati Hostel
Our little girls….

Actually their time for coming to my office is 6.00 pm i.e. after their school time is over.  But today they showed up in the morning itself.

In the beginning, before the talk starts, they feel very shy but once they start talking, they make such questions that you will not stop laughing.  They have the habits like putting their fingers in the mouth, put their lower lip in the mouth etc. Priti, Anokhi, Anandi and Rami such fantastic names, I tell them that lip has to be cut because you are putting it in your mouth, then they start laughing loudly.

When asked “what will you become when you grow old?” One of them replied ‘police’. Then all would say police.

‘Why Police?’

They say, ‘if we go in the settlement wearing uniform, it will look impressive, that is why.’

Immediately Neha said, ‘I want to become an engineer.’

‘Ok. What does engineer do, you know?’

‘No, that I don’t know.’

‘Then how you thought of becoming an engineer?’

She was silent, the others started saying, “I like Gulabjamun, Rasgula, Mango juice….

‘Didi, what do you like?’

There, Neha said, “Didi, I don’t want to become an engineer, I will also become Police.”

‘Why did you change the idea?’

‘Just like that. Keep it police.. .’

Hearing the talk of Neha everybody laughed. Priti, whose front teeth had fallen also laughed very much.  All stopped laughing but Neha continued to laugh.

‘Priti, laughs adorably, so, the mouse thought that this girl has very nice teeth. Mouse took the teeth thinking they also can laugh nicely by having teeth like Priti. So, when Priti was asleep, mouse took the teeth.’

All looked at Priti and said,

‘Is it true, Priti?’

Priti said, “No no, I was very mischievous. So, once my mother was cleaning utensils and she warned me stop doing mischief, but I did not stop. So, she threw a saucepan at me and my front teeth broke.’

O my God… Now I understood why Priti is not getting front teeth since last two years. We take a lot of care of children, but this again drew our attention while talking with little girls.

We will provide dental treatment to Priti. ‘Would you like getting new teeth?’ when we asked, Priti covered her front portion of mouth with her hand and said yes.

And we all said, ‘but we like very much this Priti without teeth because even when she gets angry still she can’t bite us.’

All started laughing a lot.

We have to be like kids to understand the changing dreams and all other things…

It is true that those little children teach us patience…

They hide beneath my table and start murmuring…

Once while talking on phone, I spoke that I have got headache. As soon as I finished the conversation, all girls started saying, “I will rub your head, I will rub your head!”. Just imagine what would happen if all the mischievous girls seen in the photo start rubbing my head?

A lot of love for those sweet girls…………

Winning the real games….

A picture with these naughty bunch was mandatory after all, they
went on to win a different kind of game ……
Suddenly there was a wave of cheer and chirpy sounds all around, “Didi, we stood first in the tug of war game.” Our girls were all jubilant as they narrated their achievement. Their joy was contagious and obviously I too was infected by it….
“So how many girls had participated… how many were competing against you?” was my obvious question!!
“Oh, Didi there were many and all of them quite strong and stout and look at the skinny us.”
“So, how many competed against you?”
“We were so nervous about this event, everyone was all prepped up….” the chorus continued, it stirred the stillness that prevailed in the office… the chatter continued but none of them answered my questions. After all the girl-talk were over with they all decided to leave, “Can we all go?” they asked. I replied in affirmative. While everyone walked out, Kinjal opted to stay-back. Kinjal is daughter of charcoal makers. The family survives in absolute poverty. Her mother assists father in coal making. Kinjal and her sister Poonam stay with this hostel and they have a younger sister who is all set to tag them next year. The mother has bigger and better dreams for her daughters some of which her daughters have taken a cue of, why else would Kinjal plans to join the police force when she grows up??
Kinjal stood at the door, “Didi, I want to speak to you..” she became quite, there was another girl Bhoomi with her too.
“Yes, tell me what is it??”
“Didi, we never competed with anyone. There was no one against us. Hence, we were declared undisputed winners. You asked us many times but, none of us replied. We cannot lie! If we had not told you the truth we wouldn’t have liked our meals!! Hiding the truth would have pained us.”
Bhoomi also joined the narrative.
I was happy the girls spoke truth and commended their righteousness. Yes, they were winners and that was a matter to rejoice. “To participate in a competition is important but to have the courage to speak the truth is even more important and since you all showed that courage you have won another important lesson in life!!”
There was cheer and jubilation all around. Our girls were all cheering and shouting with joy. “we won, we won… no one dared to participate on knowing they were to compete against us…we won..”
We are glad our girls are understanding and following the true lessons of life. It is ok if they do not become an engineer or doctor. I am sure they will go on to win many challenges if they become better humans!!
Our hostels have 140 and 190 of such naughty and fierce girls and boys staying in it. So what if they get down to verbal abuse at every juncture? they are fun and honest and innocent...
A picture with these naughty bunch was mandatory after all, they went on to win a different kind of game ……

Innocence Vs. Marginalization - What is MOOORE important is LOVE & Concern for Children - NOMAD Children...

“I took this soap from her bag because I like fragrant soaps..”

“The aroma from his tiffin box was too good to resist, hence I broke his lunch box...”
A perfect blend of Absolute Transformation through  Love & Care - The Nomad
children we speak having  bad habits can also par-excel with flying colours

“I did not have this kind of blanket, so when there was no one in the room I sneaked it in my bag…”
This may sound abnormal and alarming to you? In popular parlance such acts can be termed as theft but this kind of behavior is quite normal for children from nomadic communities. Taking any stuff, they have liked without seeking permission is a natural behavior for these children. The children hail from extremely deprived families, all they have experienced is hunger, physical and verbal abuse which in fact is second nature to these families. Access to decent meal, basic toiletries, plates and bowls, clothes, blankets, footwear etc. are a luxury to them.

Agreed that this conduct needs to be changed for better, thankfully have the opportunity to do that while they are with us staying at the hostel. The teachers and many of those working with them are fed up with such behavior, many have advised us to stop bringing such children to the hostels! But I firmly believe that if these children are fed well, are given positive experiences, have inspiring role models before them things will radically change for better for them. How else will our lovely daughters become achievers and bring such laurels for themselves and their communities, how can we stop bringing these naughty ones to stay with us at the hostel??

It is that time of the year when children staying with our hostels are gearing for mid-term examinations!!

Bal-dost Bhumi mentoring
our girls at Unnati Hostel.

Most of us would agree to the fact that the last thing a child would like to do is study or go to school!! And the children staying at all of our hostels are no exception either, if they could have a choice they would dance their way to success rather than study. Such intense is their love for dancing that given a choice they would wand to dance their way to college. As our bal-dosts \often say, “if we could play the music for the entire night, these children would dance all night!!”

The children who stay with our hostels have either studied with the village government schools and the rule of not detaining the children until 8th grade and poor standard of education means these children lag behind even with the fundamentals, so what if they are in grade 7th!! Hence our bal-dosts are required to put in extra efforts to make them attain even the basic levels. Add to this their love for outdoors and dance, distractions when it comes to focusing on studies! The bal-dosts have been nurturing the habit of regular studying in these kids sometimes bribing them with some extra dance time to ensure they finish the mandatory homework.

Our super hand working and dedicated bal-dosts have helped in kindling the love for learning amidst these kids. The sheer poverty these kids have lived through has never permitted them to  dream of a better and brighter tomorrow but the love and care of bal-dosts is opening up the world of dreams for our children, a world they have never been to until now but hopefully  a world they will  be frequenting much often now!!

Children staying with VSSM operated Vatsalya hostel shine at the district level performing art competitions….

Dexterous skills  and performing arts - in the past these  were the two hallmark features that one would associate with the  nomadic communities.  Sadly, with the advent of modern means of entertainment and mechanised productions,  the value and demand for these skills and arts have almost disappeared. There is no doubt that the skill these communities possess are priceless  and such arts and crafts need to be nurtured and promoted.
Pravin and Vijay with their certificates of appreciation...
VSSM has been striving to preserve this precious inheritance. We have tried to give a contemporary touch to  the Bhavai theatre form, train and equip the artists with better musical instruments, regularly host their performances and much more. While the efforts in the direction continue it is also important that the current generation of these communities remain in-tune with their glorious legacy.
Thus, while they are staying with us in VSSM operated hostels we try to encourage them into musical performance during the prayer  time and other celebrations in the hostels. The hostels prove to be their learning grounds.

Recently, during the  Kala Utsav event organised by the  State Government of  Gujarat , two students staying with the VSSM managed and Aarti Foundation supported Vatsalya Hostel performed exceptionally well at the Ahmedabad district level and won laurels for their school. Master Pravin Palali won stood first in the ‘child-poet’ category while Master Vijay Nat bagged the first price in Dholak performance. The received certificates and cash price each.

Such instances help in bringing back the confidence in the kids as well as strengthens our belief that we are on the right path. A special thank you  to our  Bal-Dosts Valji and Hairkishan for working tirelessly with these children and mentoring them with so much of love and care!!!
