Quite, intelligent, diligent and mature beyond her age is how we would describe 11 years old Janaki Nayak. In 2012, 7 years old Janaki arrived at Kalrav Hostel in Doliya along with elder sister Payal.  These small girls  had just lost their mother and the daunting task of raising the family was left on their father Vishnubhai who works as manual laborer.  A shattered Vishnubhai was in no condition either psychologically, physically or financially to take care of his five children; four daughters and one son all between the ages of 10 years to 2 months at the time his wife passed away.  Nonetheless, it was important for him to keep going so that at the end of the day he had money to buy food to feed his children.  A concerned and caring father that he is, Vishnubhai decided not to remarry but raise children with some help from his extended family. Another concern that boggled him was education of his children. These devastated children who were going to school found it hard to cope with the loss of   their mother.  He approached VSSM with a request to enroll his elder two daughters in the Doliya Hostel.

At the time of her enrolment Janaki could hardly  read or write and was under sever trauma. She would frequently wake up in the middle of the night crying for her mother. The team of Kalrav provided her all the necessary care and support and love of a mother. Today, Janaki is a confident 11 year old, studying in 6th grade, excelling in studies as well as co-curricular activities. Since last 2 years Janaki ranks first in her class, recently she went on to win the school elocution competition when she spoke on the subject of ‘Democracy and the Indian Election system.’ Janaki takes initiative of managing various tasks in the hostel and performs her duties well.
 The adversities of life  have made Janaki an extremely mature girl at a very young age. She is aware of the sacrifices her father has made to raise her and the siblings, especially not marrying again (which is very common in their community).  When she grows up she wants make life easy for her father. Janaki desires to peruse medicine when she grows up.
 So what would have become of Janaki had she not come to stay at Kalrav hostel?? Well, she like hundreds of girls of her community would have been married and working as a child labour in any of the farms to supplement her family’s income and feed the large brood!! It is the opportunities created at Kalrav that has enabled Janaki realize her true potential.

“પપ્પા, મારી મમ્મી ક્યારે આવશે...?” સહજ રીતે માતાની છત્રછાયા ગુમાવી બેઠેલ દીકરી જાનકી દ્વારા અનાયાસે પૂછવામાં આવેલ પ્રશ્ન! વાત છે મહેલજ ગામના વતની નાયક વિષ્ણુભાઈની. પત્ની ચાર-ચાર દીકરીઓ અને એક દીકરાને મુકીને ચાલી ગઈ, અવિરત અનંત પ્રવાસે. પાંચ-પાંચ સંતાનોની જવાબદારી ખભે લઈ વિષ્ણુભાઈ આખો દિવસ ‘દાડ્યું’ કરી ગુજરાન ચલાવે. ઘરે મારાં બાળકો એકલા-અટુલા છે” તેવી દ્વિધામાં હંમેશા રહે.
બાળકો ઘીમે-ધીમે મોટા થવા માંડ્યા, દરેક પિતાની જેમ તેમને તેમના અભ્યાસનો પ્રશ્ન સતાવવા માંડ્યો. તેઓ પણ યુનિફોર્મ પહેરી ઊછળ કૂદ કરતા બાળકોના સપના જોવા માંડ્યા. પરંતુ,એક મજુરી કરતા, ઘર વિહોણા, વિધુર પાંચ બાળકોનાં બાપને તે અધિકાર ક્યાંથી હોય. સરકારે શિક્ષણ એક ‘મૂળભૂત બંધારણીય અધિકાર’ ઘોષિત કર્યું છતા પણ ભણતરમાં પૈસાનો ભાર અનિવાર્ય છે તે વિષ્ણુભાઈ સારી પેઠે જાણતા હતા. તેથી ગામઠી સરકારી નિશાળમાં જાનકીને દાખલ કરી, પણ મન:સ્થિતિ પહેલા જેવી જ, કારણ ત્રીજા ધોરણમાં હોવાં છતાં જાનકીને કક્કાનો ક ન આવડે.
આવા કપરા સંજોગોમાં વિષ્ણુભાઈએ ડોળીયા ગામમાં vssm દ્વારા વિચરતી જાતિનાં બાળકો માટે ચાલતા છાત્રાલય વિશે સાંભળ્યું. આ છાત્રાલયમાં બાળકોને વિનામૂલ્યે ભણાવાય છે તે સાંભળી વિષ્ણુભાઈએ છાત્રાલયની મુલાકાત લીધી. “હે બુન, મારી છોડીને ઓય ભણવા રાખશો?” ડોળીયા કન્યા છાત્રાલયનાં બાલદોસ્ત વંદનાને અભણ બાપે પુછેલ સાહજિક પ્રશ્ન.
સર્વે દ્વારા કુટુંબની પરિસ્થિતિનું આકલન કરી જાનકીને ચોથા ધોરણમાં દાખલ કરવામાં આવી. આમ, વિધિવત્ રીતે શિક્ષાનો પ્રારંભ થયો. જાનકી પ્રથમ વર્ષે છાત્રાલયમાં કક્કાના ક થી જ્ઞ જાણી શીખી. હંમેશા નિયમિત વિદ્યાર્થીની જાનકીએ ધીમે-ધીમે પોતાની પ્રતિભા દેખાડવા માંડી. ભણતરનું એવું તો ઘેલું લાગ્યું કે પાંચમાં ધોરણની વાર્ષિક પરીક્ષામાં નાયક જાનકી વિષ્ણુભાઈ પ્રથમ નંબર લાવી. અત્યારે એના વર્ગમાં એ ‘રેન્કર’ છટ્ઠા ઘોરણમાં અભ્યાસ કરે છે.
આજે જાનકી છાત્રાલય વ્યવસ્થાની ઘણી જવાબદારીઓ સંભાળે છે. બાળકોના સર્વાંગી વિકાસ માટે છાત્રાલયમાં અવારનવાર ઈત્તર પ્રવૃત્તિઓ થતી હોય છે. તેમાં પણ તેણી સક્રિયપણે, રસપૂર્વક ભાગ લે. ૨૫મી જાન્યુઆરી એટલે રાષ્ટ્રીય મતદાતા દિવસ. આ દિવસે શાળામાં યોજાયેલ વકૃત્વ સ્પર્ધામાં હોશભેર જાનકીએ ભાગ લીધો. અને ‘લોકશક્તિ અને ભારતની ચૂંટણી પ્રક્રિયા’ વિષય પર બોલી પ્રથમ ક્રમાંકે આવી. પિતા તરીકે વિષ્ણુભાઈ આજે કહે છે, “આ vssmની નીહાળે મારી છોડીને ખુબ સારી સુવિધા આપી. આજે મારી બે છોડી ને એક છોરો ઓય ભણે સે. હું બીજાને પણ કવ સુ તમારા સોકરાવને ભણવા ઓય મુકો.”
જાનકી જેવાં અનેકોનાં અનેક કોડ ઈશ્વર પૂર્ણ કરે તેવા મનોરથ સાથે, વિષ્ણુભાઈ જેવાં અનેક બાપનાં ૭૦૦ થી વધારે સંતાનોને vssm વિનામૂલ્યે શિક્ષાની સુવિધા પૂરી પાડી રહ્યું છે.

The hostel living in all the VSSM managed hostel facilities is targeted to build an environment of learning, community living, inculcating the universal human values in the children staying with us. The daily schedule is designed in such a way that children work to clean their surroundings and their living spaces, perform community prayers, the elder children have to take care of the needs of the younger ones, studying and picking up other co-curricular activities…All these daily activities help them become better students and citizens. 

In the VSSM managed and ‘Giant Group of Central Mumbai and Aarti Foundation supported Kalrav girls hostel at Doliya 93 girls are staying and continuing with their education. These girls are between the ages of 5 to 11 years. On 2nd October they took up the task of cleaning the main road just outside their hostel premises. This road is the Rajkot-Ahmedabad road. The cleanliness drive was to mark Gandhi Jayanti and remember the principles Gandhi practiced and preached. The Baldosts of the facility Vandana, Jalpa, Harshad who are taking remarkable care of this children designed this initiative to put into practice what the children  have been learning in their books. 

Such small yet thoughtful initiative go a long way……one has to make very conscious efforts to ensure that these universally relevant principles that Gandhiiji preached aren’t forgotten by the future generations. With all our efforts we make sure that such initiatives do not remain limited to special days but are followed as a way of life by our children…

Vssm સંચાલિત અને ‘જાયન્ટ ગ્રુપ ઓફ સેન્ટ્રલ મુંબઈ’ અને ‘આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન’ના આર્થીક સહયોગથી સુરેન્દ્રનગર જીલ્લાના ડોળિયા ગામમાં કલરવ કન્યા છાત્રાલય ચાલે છે. વિચરતી જાતિની ૯૩ દીકરીઓ આ છાત્રાલયમાં રહીને ભણે છે. હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા આવતી દીકરીઓની ઉંમર ૫ વર્ષથી લઈને ૧૫ વર્ષ સુધીની છે. આમ તો આ દીકરીઓ રોજ પોતાની હોસ્ટેલ અને એની આસપાસના પ્રાંગણની સફાઈ કરે જ છે પણ આજે ગાંધીજયંતિ નિમિતે ખાસ હોસ્ટેલ બહારનો રાજકોટ –અમદાવાદ તરફનો રસ્તો એમણે સાફ કર્યો.. દીકરીઓ ગાંધીજીના જીવનને એમના મુલ્યોને સમજે એ માટે બાલદોસ્ત વંદના, જલ્પા, હર્ષદ એમને પુસ્તકની સાથે સાથે પ્રેકટીશમાં પણ ગાંધીના મુલ્યોને શીખવવા કોશિશ કરે છે.. નવી અને યુવા પેઢી ગાંધીના મુલ્યો સમજશે તો ભવિષ્યમાં હિંસા રહિત વિશ્વ જોઈ શકાશે.. જાણું છું આ ખુબ મોટી આશા છે.. કેટલાકના મતે અશક્ય. પણ સ્વપ્ન તો જોઈ જ શકાય અને એ સ્વપ્નને સાકાર કરવાનું પોતાના ઘરથી કરી જ શકાય.. અને એટલે જ vssm પરિવાર ગાંધીને સમજી એમના માર્ગે આગળ વધે એ કોશિશમાં અમે સતત લાગ્યા રહ્યા છીએ.. વળી આ કાર્ય ફક્ત ૨ જી ઓક્ટોબરે જ યાદ આવે અને એ થાય એ અજુગતું લાગે. આ નિરંતર પ્રક્રિયાની જેમ ચાલવું જોઈએ. vssm પરિવાર ગાંધી મુલ્યોને સમજી એને સમજદારી પૂર્વક અપનાવે એવી શ્રદ્ધા...

VSSM’s efforts has kindled the desire to learn amongst the nomadic children.

In the year 2005 when we began working with and for the nomadic communities of Gujarat we were clueless on where  do we start from!! The issues these communities faced were so many that nothing but questions stared back at us!!! However, as we embarked upon our journey, things gradually began to fall in place. VSSM team, a collective of focused, dedicated and extremely hard working individuals, came together. Such sedulous  team meant gravest of issues getting resolved and VSSM inning closer to achieving its mission. 

Education and the lack of it is the severest challenge the nomadic communities face. It is both the cause and effect of their dismal condition. The VSSM team was required to put in tremendous hard work to bring the children to school and cultivate an environment of learning within these communities. Along the hard work came unflinching support of the our very dear friends and well-wishers. The first programs focusing on education we began were of the Bridge Schools and Balghars, which later progressed into hostels.15 girls in a specially initiated Doliya Girls Hostel is how we began to now 180 children at the Doliya Hostel alone. Currently this  hostel is running at its full capacity. There are numerous children wishing to come ad study at Doliya but we have to refuse admission as it is virtually impossible to accommodate any more children at Doliya. 

We recently, on 10th September, paid a visit to the hostel. The children gave us a warm welcome. The special request they had for us this time was to arrange their two days trip to Ahmedabad!! 

We are grateful to ‘Giant Group of Central Mumbai’ and 'Aarti Foundation’ for their continued support towards the Doliya hostel. 

The urge for education amongst the children from nomadic communities has kindled and VSSM is working towards ensuring that by next year it is able to accommodate children all these children who are willing to stay in hostel and study further. We look forward to the continued support of our well-wishers in our efforts.

વિચરતી અને વિમુક્ત જાતીઓ સાથે કામ શરુ કર્યું ત્યારે કંઈ કેટલાંય પ્રશ્નો સામે હતાં. અમે હંમેશા એ પ્રશ્નો માટે કહેતાં,

ગણ્યા ગણાય નહિ ..

વીણ્યા વીણાય નહિ..

શરૂઆત ક્યાંથી કરવી એ પણ એક પ્રશ્ન હતો.. પણ ધીમેધીમે ઉકેલ સુઝતા ગયા અને આગળ વધતાં ગયા. vssmને સમાજ માટે કંઈ કરી છૂટવાની ભાવનાવાળી સુંદર ટીમ મળી અને કામ સરળ થવા માંડ્યા.

વિચરતી જાતિમાં શિક્ષણનું પ્રમાણ ખુબ ઓછું. ખુબ મહેનત કરીને આ જાતિઓના જે પડાવોમાં અમે કામ કરતા હતાં. એમાના કેટલાકમાં અમે vssm સાથે સંકળાયેલા શુભેચ્છક સ્વજનોની મદદથી તંબુ શાળા શરુ કરી અને એમાંથી જ હોસ્ટેલ પણ ઉભી થઇ. હોસ્ટેલની શરૂઆત ૧૫ દીકરીઓથી કરેલી આજે ૧૮૦ બાળકો ડોળીયાગામમાં આવેલી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણી રહ્યા છે. 

તા.૧૦ ઓક્ટોબરના રોજ આ બાળકોને મળવા જવાનું થયું. બધાએ ફૂલથી સ્વાગત કર્યું અને અમદાવાદમાં બે દિવસનો પ્રવાસ ગોઠવવાની માંગ પણ કરી. ડોળીયાની આ હોસ્ટેલમાં જેમનો આર્થિક સહયોગ મળે છે એવા ‘જાયન્ટ ગ્રુપ ઓફ સેન્ટ્રલ મુંબઈ’ અને ‘આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન’ના અમે આભારી છીએ એમના સહયોગ વગર આ થવું મુશ્કલે હતું. અત્યારે ઘણા બાળકોને હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા આવવાની ઈચ્છા છે પણ હવે હોસ્ટેલની કેપેસીટી નથી. આવતા વર્ષે આ બધા બાળકો માટે નવી વ્યવસ્થા ગોઠવાય એ માટેના અમે પ્રયત્ન કરીશું. સમાજ સહયોગ કરશે એવી શ્રદ્ધા છે.

The need to educate, the importance to educate are foreign concepts to the parents from nomadic communities. They make hardly any efforts to ensure their children go to school, with  boys their is still a little concern but when it comes to girls they are absolutely unprepared to send them off to school.  Amidst such mindsets VSSM is striving to make sure that the children from these communities go to school and remain with the school system. We have designed specials strategies to make sure that more and more girls from these communities are brought within the folds of mainstream education. 90 girls are staying with VSSM run Doliya Girls Hostel for girls from nomadic communities. Starting this year (June 2015) we have set up another residential facility especially of tte girls. This time the hostel is right next to our office in Ahmedabad.  The girls have been enrolled with one of the leading school of Ahmedabad. 

All along convincing the parents has been the most challenging task of the entire initiative. Last weekend was tough for the us and the girls because of some disruptions created by the parents. With great difficulty we could convince the parents.  The entire episode has left us and the girls distraught. 

To cheer them up and and boost their morale we took the girls to see aircraft take offs and landings at the Ahmedabad airport this morning. We went the girls to shed away all fears, over come all turbulence and fly high to achieve their dreams. They have been in an upbeat mood,  ready to reach for the stars  and hope similar sense prevails with their parents and community members ………

વિચરતા પરિવારોની દીકરીઓ ખુબ ભણે ખુબ આગળ વધે એ માટે vssmનો પ્રયાસ..

વિચરતા પરિવારોને શિક્ષણની જરાય સમજ નથી. એટલે બાળકોને ભણાવવાનું પણ ખાસ કરતા નથી. છોકરાંઓને ભણાવવાનું હવે થોડું કરી રહ્યા છે પણ દીકરીને ભણાવવાની તો તૈયારી જ નથી...

vssm વિચરતી જાતિની દીકરીઓ ભણતી થાય એ માટે કોશિશ કરે છે. ૯૦ દીકરીઓ ડોળીયાગામમાં vssm દ્વારા ચાલતી હોસ્ટેલમાં રહીને ભણે છે. અમદાવાદમાં પણ આપણા કાર્યાલયની જગ્યામાં જ દીકરીઓ ભણતી થાય એ માટેની વ્યવસ્થા ગોઠવી છે.. પણ કેટલીક દીકરીઓના માતા- પિતા ખુબ મુશ્કેલી ઉભી કરે.. ગત શની – રવી આ દીકરીઓ અને મારા માટે પણ બહુ દુઃખદાયક રહ્યો.. વાલીઓને સમજાવવામાં ખુબ મુશ્કેલી પડી.. માંડ બધું થાળે પડ્યું.. પણ દીકરીઓ ખુબ ઉદાસ થઇ ગઈ હતી..

એમની આ ઉદાસીનતા દુર થાય અને એમના સ્વપ્નની ઉડાન ખુબ ઉંચી ઉડે, કોઈ વિઘ્નો નડે નહિ એવા શુભ આશયથી ઉંચી ઉડાનને જોવાનો કાર્યક્રમ કર્યો અને અમે અમદાવાદ એરપોર્ટ પર ટેક ઓફ અને લેન્ડ થતી ફલાઈટ જોવા આજે સવારે પહોચી ગયા.. જે તસ્વીરમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.. દીકરીઓએ નિરાશા ખંખેરી નાખી છે અને ઉંચી ઉડાન ભરવા પાછી તૈયાર થઇ ગઈ છે... એમના આ સ્વપ્નને હવે કોઈ હાની ના પહોચે એ માટે સૌને સદબુદ્ધિ આપે એવી પ્રભુ પ્રાર્થના...

"So that they are treated with love and care  and do not face discrimination…” was the sole reason that prompted us to begin  hostels for nomadic children.

How to bring the children of nomadic communities to school was an extremely pressing issue for VSSM when it began working with the communities almost a decade ago. It began with enrolling  children from these communities to hostels and Ashram Shalas functioning in various parts of Gujarat. 

In the year 2011 VSSM enrolled 7 girls in a government aided hostel run by an organisation in Dodiya village of Surendranagar district. Some how we got a  feeling that the decision of enrolling the girls was forced upon them. The authorities and the warden both did not look prepared to host these girls but for the reasons best to their knowledge they did not refuse admission to the girls. All the time,  for three days the girls stayed there, we felt that they weren’t welcoming enough and heisted to embrace the girls. From the moment they walked in the hostel  the girls faced discriminatory behaviour from the authorities and fellow residents. VSSM’s Ilaben,  a Baldost,  who taught these girls was accompanying them so as to help them settle down. Ilaben was uncomfortable with the way these girls were treated by the warden. On the fourth day when she had to leave the hostel, she called us up saying, “ I don’t feel like leaving these girls here!! They aren’t received well here, in such circumstances whom to trust them with is the question nagging me!!” After learning in detail about the entire situation we decided to call the girls back in just three days. 

The episode made us believe that things hadn’t changed a bit since  2006-07 the year when we had enrolled a substantial number of nomadic children in various hostels and all of them came back within few weeks of enrolment.  6 years down the line  the situation remained the same.In any hostel that we enrolled the children from nomadic communities they faced same discriminatory behaviour from the authorities as well as fellow hostel mates. 

What next was the  question staring at us?? The Baldosts advised us to start our very own residential facility where each child is treated with love, care and dignity. We shared this thought with our well-wishers who whole heartedly accepted the suggestion. 

The Doliya Girls Hostel began with 7 girls in a rented premises at Jain Heetwardhak Mandal. Today 69 girls are staying with the Doliya hostel and studying at the government school in Doliya, the entire expense of which is supported by The Giant Group of Central Mumbai and whenever needed respected Shri. Chandrakantbhai Gogri also extends his support.

વર્ષ-૨૦૧૧માં સુરેન્દ્રનગર જિલ્લાનાં ડોળિયાગામમાં એક સંસ્થા દ્વારા સરકારી ગ્રાન્ટથી ચાલતી હોસ્ટેલમાં વિચરતા સમુદાયની ૭ દીકરીઓને આપણે દાખલ કરી. આમ તો પરાણે દાખલ કરી એમ કહીએ તો ચાલે. હોસ્ટેલના ગૃહમાતા કે વહીવટ કરનારાને આ દીકરીઓને રાખવાનું જરાય મન નહીં, પણ તે વખતે તેઓ ના ન પાડી શક્યા. પણ આ દીકરીઓ સાથેનો તેમનો વ્યવહાર ભેદભાવપૂર્ણ હતો. દીકરીઓ ત્રણ જ દિવસ રહી. સાથે તેમના બાલદોસ્ત ઇલાબહેન પણ હતા. ઇલાબહેન દીકરીઓ સાથે થઇ રહેલો વ્યવહાર જોતા હતા. ત્રીજા દિવસે દીકરીઓને મૂકીને એમને પરત આવવાનું હતું. તેમણે ફોન કરીને કહ્યું, ‘ દીકરીઓને મૂકીને આવવામાં મારુ મન નથી માનતું! આ લોકો તો આપણી આ દીકરીઓને સ્વીકારતા જ નથી. આવામાં આમના ભરોસે દીકરીઓને મૂકીને કેમ આવું?’ ઇલાબહેન પાસેથી સર્વ સ્થિતિ જાણ્યા પછી આપણે દીકરીઓને પરત બોલાવી. વિચરતા સમુદાયો સાથે કામ શરૂ કર્યું તે અરસામાં એટલે કે વર્ષ ૨૦૦૬-૦૭માં પણ વિવિધ હોસ્ટેલમાં દાખલ કરેલા બાળકો સાથે આવો જ વ્યવહાર હતો. એટલે જ એ વખતે પણ બાળકો હોસ્ટેલમાં રહ્યા નહોતા, આજે એજ પરિસ્થિતિનું પુનરાવર્તન થઇ રહ્યું હતું. હવે શું કરવું તે પ્રશ્ન હતો. બાળકો સાથે કામ કરતા તમામ બાલદોસ્તોએ આપણી પોતાની જ હોસ્ટેલ કરવાનું સૂચન કર્યું. જ્યાં દરેક બાળકને પ્રેમ મળે કોઈ ભેદ નાં હોય.. આ સૂચના આપણા કામોમાં મદદરૂપ થતા તમામ સ્વજનો સમક્ષ મુક્યું. સૌએ તે વધાવી લીધું અને ડોળિયામાં જ જૈન હિતવર્ધક મંડળની ભાડાની જગ્યામાં જ ૭ દીકરીઓથી હોસ્ટેલની શરૂઆત થઇ. આજે તેમાં ૬૯ દીકરીઓ ભણી રહી છે. હોસ્ટેલનો તમામ ખર્ચ જાયન્ટ ગ્રુપ ઓફ સેન્ટ્રલ મુંબઈ એ ઉપાડી લીધો છે. જરૂર પડે આદરણીય શ્રી ચંદ્રકાંતભાઈ ગોગરી પણ તેમાં સહાયભૂત થાય છે.

દીકરીઓ આપણી હોસ્ટેલમાં રહે છે અને ભણવા ગામમાં આવેલી સરકારી શાળામાં જાય છે.
