Sports Day Festival at our Pansar Campus

 “Discipline, punctuality, and sportsmanship—these are three lessons that no textbook can teach, but the playing field does.”

For the overall development of more than 500 students studying at Vallabh Vidya Vihar, classroom education alone is not enough. Our goal is to build strong teamwork among children and help them learn to take leadership roles in managing the school campus as well.

Therefore, along with leadership training, we organized a grand sports festival to teach life lessons through physical effort and on-field experience.

The most attractive part of this sports festival was the games for younger children. When games like lemon-and-spoon, sack race, flour blowing, and musical chairs began on the field, the atmosphere was filled with laughter and joy.

Sack Race: As children jumped with their legs inside sacks and fell on the field, their determination to get up again and keep running—without fear of losing—was truly admirable.

Flour Blowing: This game created a lot of fun! Seeing children’s faces covered in flour in their excitement to find chocolates made everyone burst into laughter.

Musical Chairs: In the rush to grab a chair to the rhythm of the music, children learned lessons of alertness and time awareness.

Enthusiasm of Young Athletes: Kabaddi and Cricket

For the older students, their favorite game, kabaddi, was organized. In their efforts to help one another and lead their team to victory, true teamwork was clearly visible.

In addition, children participated with great enthusiasm in games like shot put and cricket. In cricket, students from 8th and 9th grades defeated older students. They repeatedly said that despite being younger, they won because of excellent teamwork. Listening to them made us feel that our goal of teaching strong teamwork had truly been achieved.

This sports festival, which began early in the morning, was strongly supported by the VSSM and KRSF teams. In encouraging the children and ensuring fair management of the entire competition, Jayantibhai, Bijolbhai, Nikulbhai, Ilaben, Kiranbhai, Vandanaben, Ghanshyambhai, Prakashbhai, Kokilaben, Surekhaben, Tejalben, Nagjibhai, Chaturbhai, Mohanbhai, Mukeshbhai, and many others remained actively involved throughout.

Our effort was to ensure that every child participated in the competition. By playing, children learn to accept defeat and develop sportsmanship. A child who learns to accept defeat on the field and stand up again cannot be defeated by any force in the world.

Today, on the grounds of Vallabh Vidya Vihar – Pansar, it truly felt as though responsible and disciplined citizens of the future were being shaped through sports.

"શિસ્ત, સમયપાલન અને ખેલદિલી – આ ત્રણ પાઠ જે કોઈ પાઠ્યપુસ્તક નથી શીખવી શકતું, તે રમતનું મેદાન શીખવે છે."

વલ્લભ વિદ્યા વિહારમાં અભ્યાસ કરતા ૫૦૦થી વધુ બાળકોના સર્વાંગી વિકાસ માટે માત્ર વર્ગખંડનું શિક્ષણ પૂરતું નથી. અમારો લક્ષ્ય બાળકોમાં મજબૂત 'ટીમ વર્ક' ઉભું થાય અને તેઓ શિક્ષણ સંકુલના સંચાલનમાં પણ આગેવાની લેતા શીખે તે.

એટલે અમે બાળકોને લીડરશિપની તાલીમની સાથે સાથે મેદાન પર પરસેવો પાડીને જીવનના પાઠ શીખવવા માટે 'ભવ્ય રમતોત્સવ' નું આયોજન કર્યું.

આ રમતોત્સવનું સૌથી આકર્ષક પાસું નાના બાળકોની રમતો હતી. મેદાનમાં જ્યારે લીંબુ-ચમચી, કોથળાદોડ, લોટ ફૂંકણી અને સંગીત ખુરશી જેવી રમતો શરૂ થઈ ત્યારે વાતાવરણ હાસ્ય અને આનંદથી ભરાઈ ગયું હતું.

કોથળાદોડ: કોથળામાં પગ ભરાવીને કૂદકા મારતા બાળકો જ્યારે મેદાનમાં પડતા, ત્યારે હારના ડર વગર ફરી ઊભા થઈને દોડવાની તેમની જિજીવિષા જોવા જેવી હતી.

લોટ ફૂંકણી: આ રમતમાં તો ભારે રમુજ થઈ! ચોકલેટ શોધવાની લ્હાયમાં બાળકોના મોંઢા લોટથી ખરડાયેલા જોઈને સૌ કોઈ ખડખડાટ હસી પડ્યા હતા.

સંગીત ખુરશી: મ્યુઝિકના તાલે એક ખુરશી માટેની એ દોડધામમાં બાળકોએ સમયસૂચકતાના પાઠ શીખ્યા.

યુવા ખેલાડીઓનો જોશ: કબડ્ડી અને ક્રિકેટ

મોટા બાળકો માટે તેમની મનપસંદ રમત કબડ્ડીનું આયોજન કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું. એકબીજાનો સાથ આપીને ટીમને જીતાડવાની એ મથામણમાં સાચું ટીમવર્ક જોવા મળ્યું.

આ ઉપરાંત ગોળાફેંક અને ક્રિકેટ જેવી રમતોમાં પણ બાળકોએ પૂરા ઉત્સાહથી ભાગ લીધો હતો. ક્રિકેટની ટીમમાં તો આઠમુ, નવમુ ધોરણ ભણતા બાળકોએ એમનાથી મોટી ઉંમરના બાળકોને હરાવ્યા. અમે નાના તોય મોટાઓને અમે ટીમવર્ક સરસ કર્યું એટલે હરાવી શક્યા એવું વારંવાર એમણે કહ્યું.. એમની વાતો સાંભળી અમારી આ ટુલ્લડ મજબૂત ટીમવર્ક શીખી ગયાનું લાગ્યું.

સવારથી જ શરૂ થયેલા આ રમતોત્સવમાં VSSM અને KRSF ટીમની ભૂમિકા પાયાની રહી. બાળકોને પ્રોત્સાહિત કરવામાં અને સમગ્ર સ્પર્ધાનું નિષ્પક્ષ સંચાલન કરવામાં જયંતીભાઈ, બીજોલભાઈ, નીકુલભાઈ, ઈલાબહેન, કિરણભાઈ, વંદનાબહેન, ઘનશ્યામભાઈ, પ્રકાશભાઈ, કોકિલાબેન, સુરેખાબેન, તેજલબેન, નાગજીભાઈ, ચતુરભાઈ, મોહનભાઈ અને મુકેશભાઈ વગેરે સૌ ખડેપગે રહ્યા.

અમારો પ્રયાસ દરેક બાળક સ્પર્ધામાં ભાગ લે તેવો.  રમતા થશે તો હારને પચાવતા શીખશે અને ખેલદિલી કેળવાશે. જે બાળક મેદાન પર હાર પચાવીને ફરી બેઠું થતા શીખી જાય એને દુનિયાની કોઈ તાકાત હરાવી શકતી નથી.

વલ્લભ વિદ્યા વિહાર - પાનસરના આંગણે આજે રમતગમત દ્વારા ભવિષ્યના જવાબદાર અને શિસ્તબદ્ધ નાગરિકો ઘડાયા હોય તેવો અહેસાસ થયો.

બનાસકાંઠાના કાકરગામમાં આવેલી અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા બાળકો સાથે વૃક્ષ રોપણ કર્યું એ પણ વૃક્ષ દેવની નાનકડી શોભાયાત્રા કરીને.. બાળકો પ્રકૃતિ પ્રત્યે સંવેદનશીલ બને એ પણ ભણતર સાથે જરૂરી..

Healthy competition is good for the growth of a person. That is why during school  times the students are encouraged to participate in various competitions. The win-lose during these competitions help one to understand the ups and downs of life and the strength to withstand the tough times.

VSSM runs two hostels. One is in Kakar village in Banaskantha district. The other one called Vishwa Mangalam is in Himmatnagar managed in association with Vishwamangalam Trust. The girls staying in this hostel take training to learn music. Their progress is gauged in the competition they participate in.

Recently a Youth Festival at District & State level was organised. In this, the students from our hostels participated. They came first in a group & musical song category at the District level. At the State level they finished honourable fourth in a competition organised at Hemchandra University in Patan.

They had trained hard for the first position but  there were others who were better. However, every participant learns much more about life than just about competition.

The students were encouraged by Mayankbhai Jadhav, Nalinbhai, Bijalbhai, Ghanshyambhai, Dimpleben and Vanita.

The participants who performed brilliantly were Rekha, Shilpa, Puri, Apeksha, Jiya, Jhanvi & Mittal. Our congratulations to them. We wish them bigger success in their future endeavours.

સ્પર્ધા માણસના ઘડતર માટે ઉપયોગી. એટલે જ શાળા જીવન દરમ્યાન આયોજીત થતી વિવિધ સ્પર્ધાઓમાં વિદ્યાર્થીને ભાગ લેવડાવવાનું ખાસ કરાવવામાં આવે. સ્પર્ધા દરમ્યાન થતી હાર જીત જીવનના ચડાવ ઉતારમાં ટકી રહેવાનો જુસ્સો આપે. 

VSSM બે છાત્રાલય ચલાવે. એક છાત્રાલય બનાસકાંઠાના કાકરમાં ચાલે. જ્યારે બીજુ વિશ્વ મંગલમ અનેરા - હિંમતનગર પાસે વિશ્વમંગલમ ટ્રસ્ટની સાથે ચાલે. આ છાત્રાલયમાં ભણતી વિદ્યાર્થીઓ સંગીતની તાલીમ લે. તાલીમનું નિદર્શન વિવિધ સ્પર્ધમાં થાય.

તાજેતરમાં જિલ્લા અને રાજ્યકક્ષાનો યુવા મહોત્વસ આયોજીત થયો. એમાં અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતી દિકરીઓએ ભાગ લીધો. જિલ્લા કક્ષાએ સમૂહગીત અને સુગમ સંગીતમાં પ્રથમ આવી. રાજ્યકક્ષાની સ્પર્ધા પાટણ હેમચંદ્રાચાર્ય યુનિવર્સીટીમાં આયોજીત થઈ જેમાં દિકરીઓ ચોથા ક્રમે આવી. 

મહેનત પ્રથમ નંબર મળે તેવી કરી હતી. પણ એમના કરતા વધારે ઉત્તમ કરવાવાળા વિદ્યાર્થીઓ સ્પર્ધામાં આવ્યા. પણ દરેક વિદ્યાર્થી સ્પર્ધામાં નંબર મેળવવાની લાલસાની સાથે સાથે અન્ય ઘણું શીખે, જે અમારી દીકરીઓ શીખી. 

દિકરીઓને સંગીતમાં મયંકભાઈ જાદવ, નલિનભાઈ, બીજોલભાઈ, ઘનશ્યામભાઈ, ડિમ્પલબેન અને અમારી વનિતાનું પ્રોત્સાહન મળ્યું. 

સંગીતમાં ઉત્કૃષ્ઠ પ્રદર્શન કરનાર અમારી રેખા, શિલ્પા, પૂરી, ભૂમિકા, અપેક્ષા.જીયા, જાહનવી, મિત્તલને અભીનંદન તેમજ ભવિષ્યમાં ખુબ પ્રગતિ કરી સફળતાના શીખરે પહોંચે તેવી શુભભાવના..

Educating the children of Fulwadi community is a difficult dream to realise...

"We have to beg though we do not like to. Our parents used to beg without hesitation."

Young children of Fulwadi community said this. They earlier used to earn money as snake charmers. However, the government banned this activity. Since then they try to earn their livelihood by doing small labour jobs or by begging. The parents move around for work and along with them these children seek alms. 

The boys study till standard 8th and the girls till standard 5th only. They believe that is all they should study. Even parents accept that.

In Kakar Village of Banaskantha there is a large population of Fulwadi community. More than 350 families stay there. However only 125-150 children register their names in the school. There may be more than 300 children. However many have not registered their names. Moreover, even the children move around with their parents so teachers cannot register their names.

In the month of "Magshar" ( as per Hindu calendar) they come home for a month else they along with their parents lead a nomadic life.

Some children stay put in the community and go to school. They survive on their own by begging for food on Saturdays & Sundays which last for the rest of the week.

This is a tragic &  unbelievable situation.

Whenever I go to "Fulwadi" community in Kakar from Ahmedabad, it feel like you have travelled back in time to the 18th Century. 

In order that children staying in this community in Kakar can study, Smt Viraben Meghji Shah (Chanderia) built a school; for them.  However it is extremely difficult for the children to continue going to school on a long term basis. They cannot stay put at one place. This is a tough call for us. We have to overcome this problem of children not going to school.  For that we will do whatever best is required to be done. It requires patience. Our well wishers have to understand that it is difficult to get results overnight. Our donor Pravinbhai Shah in whose mother's name the school is set up understands this and supports us fully. That is a big comfort for us. We at VSSM are thankful to Shri Pravinbhai & his family for their support 

We have dreamt of educating the children of Fulwadi community, It is a difficult dream to realise.

'અમાર તો મોગવાનું!'

'પણ માંગવું કોને ગમે?'

'ચમ ના ગમ્. અમાર મા-બાપ તો ઠેઠથી મોગ...'

સાપના ખેલ બતાવીને પેટિયું રળનાર અને ખેલ બતાવવા પર પ્રતિબંધ આવ્યા પછી મજૂરી મળે તો મજૂરી કરીને અને ન મળે તો ભીખ માંગીને પેટિયું રળતા ફૂલવાદી સમુદાયના ટબુડિયાઓ સાથેનો આ સંવાદ. મા-બાપ કામ ધંધા માટે વિચરણ કરે ને એમની સાથે નાના નાના બાળકો પણ ખભે ઝોળી લઈને માંગવાનું કરે. 

બાળકો ધો.8 સુધી ભણે એ વાત વડિલો સમજે. બાકી ધો.8થી આગળનું એમને ન સમજાય. બાળકો પણ 8 ધો. સુધી જ ભણવાનું એમ માને. જ્યારે દિકરીઓ તો 5 ધો. જ ભણે.

બનાસકાંઠાના કાકરમાં ફૂલવાદીની મોટી વસાહત. લગભગ 350 થી વધુ પરિવારો ત્યાં વસે. પણ નિશાળમાં માંડ 125 -150 બાળકોના નામ દાખલ થયા હશે. વસાહતમાં બાળકોની સંખ્યા તો 300 ઉપર હશે પણ બધાના નામ નિશાળમાં લખાવ્યા નથી. વળી બાળકો મા-બાપ સાથે વિચરણ કરે એટલે શિક્ષકો પણ સામે ચાલીને નામ નોંધવાનું કરી ન શકે.

માગસર મહિનામાં આ બધા એક મહિના માટે ઘરે આવે. બાકી ભમતા રામ.

કેટલાક બાળકો વસાહતમાં રહે ને નિશાળમાં જાય. આ બાળકો પોતાનો ખર્ચો જાતે કાઢે. પાંચમાં છઠ્ઠામાં ભણતા બાળકો શનિ રવીમાં અનાજ માંગવા જાય ને જે મળે તેમાંથી અઠવાડિયું ચલાવે.

અકલ્પનીય સ્થિતિ.

અમદાવાદથી જ્યારે કાકરની ફૂલવાદી વસાહતમાં જવું ત્યારે લાગે કે 18મી સદીમાં આવી ગઈ છું.

આ વસાહતમાં રહેતા બાળકો ભણે તે માટે અમે વસાહતમાં જ શ્રીમતી વિરાબહેન મેઘજીભાઈ શાહ(ચંદેરિયા) છાત્રાલય બાંધ્યું. પણ બાળકોનું નિયમીત છાત્રાલયમાં ટકવું ખરેખર મુશ્કેલ. પગમાં ભમરી એટલે પગ ઝાઝો સમય એક જગ્યા પર સ્થિર જ ન થાય.

અમારા માટે પણ આકરી કસોટી. સફળ તો થવાનું જ છે. એ માટે એડીચોટીનું જોર લાગડી દઈશું. પણ આ કાર્યમાં ધીરજ ખુબ જોઈએ. મદદ કરનાર સ્વજનો આ વાત સમજે તો જ બધુ કામનું. બાકી રાતો રાત પરિણામ અહીંયા ન મળે.

અમારા પ્રવિણભાઈ શાહ જેમના માતૃશ્રીના નામ પર આ છાત્રાલય ચાલે એ આ વાત બરાબર સમજે. એટલે જ પુરા ભાવથી અમારા પર શ્રદ્ધા રાખી એ મદદ કરે. એમની બહુ મોટી હૂંફ છે. 

અમારા પર શ્રદ્ધા રાખી અમારા કાર્યમાં મદદ કરનાર આદરણીય પ્રવિણભાઈ અને એમના પરિવારનો VSSM પરિવાર આભારી છે..

ફૂલવાદી બાળકોને ભણતા કરવાનું સ્વપ્ન સેવ્યું. પણ આ સ્વપ્ન લોઢાના ચણા ચાવવા જેવું.  જે પુરુ કરવા મથે  શિક્ષણનું કાર્ય સંભાળતી અમારી ટીમ.  પ્રિય ડીમ્પલબેન, વનિતા, જય, વિજય, જ્યોતી, શીવાભાઈ, અરવીંદભાઈ આ બધાની નિસબતને સલામ...

Kakar is a settlement with a considerable population of Fulvadi families. The once snake charmers, the Fulvadi, now earn their living from agricultural activities or other menial jobs, and in the absence of work, they choose to beg. And all of these options need them to migrate to distant places, hindering their children’s education prospects. As a result, there is not a single boy in the settlement who has studied beyond 9th grade and a girl who has completed 5th grade.

After understanding these peculiar challenges, it was essential to have a residential facility where the children could stay back while their parents migrated. So, after a wait of several years, finally, Smt. Virabahen Meghjibhai Shah (Chanderiya) Hostel was built, and 140 children have been enrolled.

However, these children are not at all inclined towards studying. Our Bal-Dosts Kajal, Ghanashyam, Naran, Vanita, and others are continuously working towards raising their attitude towards learning, but the moment they become tough, the children snap and prepare to leave. Even their parents do not support the efforts. One complaint from the children is they come over to take them back.

“Why do you choose to fight tough battles?” my team members often ask me. And I tell them we will always choose to take the road less traveled, constantly challenge ourselves, and take up tough jobs.

I decided to go and stay with these children for a couple of days. “What do you all wish to become in life?” I inquired. There was no response, I repeated the question a few times, after which some kids responded.

“Didi, I will begin to beg after I complete 8th grade,” said one.

“I will also do the same,” responded another.

“After I complete 8th grade, will any factory employ and pay me Rs. 12,000?” one asked.

“I want to drive an automobile to ferry people!” said one.

Around five kids spoke, but none could think beyond 8th grade, as if the boys had decided to study until 8th and the girls unto grade 4th.

It is often said, “if you stop dreaming, you start dying!” But here, the children have no dreams.

We have an uphill task; the challenges are formidable. But we will continue to endeavor; we are waiting for that one child to shine through, and I know the entire community will follow. 

We are grateful for the support of respected Shri Pravinbhai Shah, Shri Piyushbhai Kothari, Jetco Organisation, Mardvibahen, Pallika Kanani, YVO Group, respected Shri Krishnakant Mehta, Indira Mehta in this arduous task. I know that the team will not shy away from pouring their heart and soul into these efforts; kindly pray for our success in realizing this dream of educating the children of Kakar.

શરણાઈ તો બધા વગાડી જાણે પણ સાંબેલું વગાડે એ સાચ્ચો... 

અમે સાંબેલું વગાડવાનું અઘરુ કાર્ય હાથ ઘર્યું...

બનાસકાંઠાનું કાકર. ફુલવાદી પરિવારો ત્યાં રહે. સાપના ખેલ કરવાનું હવે રહ્યું નહીં એટલે ખેતી કામ માટે ને એ  ન મળે ત્યારે ભીક્ષા માંગીને નભવા અર્થે ફુલવાદી પરિવારો સ્થળાંતર કરે. બાળકો પણ એમની સાથે સ્થળાંતર કરે. પરિણામે એમનું શિક્ષણ બગડે. આખી વસાહતમાં નવ ધોરણથી આગળ ભણેલો એકેય છોકરો ન મળે ને પાંચ ધોરણથી આગળ ભણેલી દીકરી ન મળે. 

મા-બાપ બાળકોને વસાહતમાં મુકીને જઈ શકે ને બાળકો ભણી શકે તે માટે અમે શ્રીમતી વિરાબહેન મેઘજીભાઈ શાહ(ચંદેરિયા) છાત્રાલયનું નિર્માણ કર્યું અને 140 બાળકોનો પ્રવેશ થયો. 

પણ બાળકોને ભણવું જરાય ગમે નહીં. અમારા બાલદોસ્ત કાજલ, ઘનશ્યામ, નારણ,  વનીતા ભણતર માટે જરાક દબાણ કરે કે બાળકો કહી દે અમારે ઘરે જવું છે ને વાલીઓ પણ સામે બાળકોને લઈ જવા તૈયાર. 

કાર્યકરો કહે, તમને આવા અઘરા કામો જ કેમ ગમે? ને હું ઉપરનું વિધાન શરણાઈ તો સૌ વગાડે વાળુ કહુ.

આ બાળકો સાથે હમણાં ત્રણ દિવસ રહી. એક દિવસ બધાને પુછ્યું તમારે શું બનવું છે?  પહેલાં તો જવાબ જ ન મળ્યો. બે ચાર વાર પુછ્યું પછી કહ્યું,

દીદી આઠ ધોરણ ભણી પસી મોગવા જઈશ.બીજાએ કહ્યું, મુયે આઠ પસી મોગવા જઈશ.ત્રીજાએ કહ્યું આઠ ભણું પસી ફેકટરીમાં બાર હજારના પગારવાળી નોકરી મલ?ચોથાએ કહ્યું મારે તો સટલિયું ચલાબ્બુ હ્....

પાંચેક છોકરાંઓએ સ્વપ્ન કહ્યા એ પણ ઉપર જણાવ્યા પ્રમાણેના... 

છોકરાંઓ ધો. 8 સુધી ભણવાનું નક્કી કરે ને દીકરીઓ ધો.5...

સપના મરી જાય એ માણસ મરી જાય એમ કહે પણ અહીંયા તો સપના જ નથી...

અમારે ઘણું મથવાનું છે.. ને મથીશું. બસ અહીંયાથી કોઈક દીકરો કે દીકરી ભણીને આગળ નીકળી જાય તો આખો સમાજ એની પાછળ નીકળી જશે...

અમારા આવા કઠણ કાર્યમાં આદરણીય પ્રવિણભાઈ શાહ, શ્રી પિયુશભાઈ કોઠારી, જેટકો સંસ્થા, માર્દવીબેન, પલ્લીકા કાનાણી, YVO ગ્રુપ, આદરણીય ક્રિષ્ણકાંત મહેતા, ઈન્દિરા મહેતા વગેરે સ્વજનોની મદદ મળી રહી છે એ માટે આભારી છીએ. બસ સફળ થશું એ માટે તમે સૌ પ્રાર્થના કરજો... 

બાકી મહેનતમાં પાછા નહીં પડીએ એ નક્કી....

The hunger to learn

I distinctly remember that afternoon at a Fulvadi settlement in Kakar. As  I  walked across, my eyes fell upon three children making rotla on a chula.

"Why are you making rotla? Aren't your parents?" I ask them.

"Our parents are out of town for work," one of them responds.

"Do they give you money before leaving?" I inquire out of curiosity.

"Yes, around Rs. 150-200."

"When did they last give you that amount?"

"Around one and half months back."

"How long can such a small amount last?"

"On Saturdays, after our school is over, we set out to beg and spend the entire Sunday begging for food. We consume the collected food throughout the week."

This interaction with seventh-grader Vinu had shaken me to the core.

The Fulvadi families need to migrate for work as the place of their permanent settlement does not provide them with enough opportunities to earn a decent livelihood. Therefore, the children usually accompany their parents. However, only some of the parents and children inclined towards continuing education make such above mentioned arrangements. Moreover, it is not just the distress migration but also the crippling rules set by the community that allow girls to study until 4th grade and boys to learn till 8th grade that hinders the kids' ability to go to school.

After thorough introspection of the entire situation, we decided to build a hostel in the settlement. In the beginning, the  VSSM team was apprehensive; they feared if the community would understand and accept the hostel facility. "It is easy to play the flute; let's make music out of pestle!" I would tell them.

Shri Pravinbhai Shah largely funded the construction of the hostel. Shri Piyushbhai Kothari of Jewelex Foundation and JETCO also joined hands. Apart from this, our other well-wishing friends and donors also contributed towards making Smt. Veerabahen Meghjibhai Shah (Chanderiya) Hostel at Kankar a reality. The hostel can host more than 170 children; fortunately, they will not be required to survive on a meal of rotla+chilli.

"We have never had milk and breakfast in the morning, but we get all of these in the hostel," the children tell us.

On the occasion of the house warming ceremony of the homes built for nomadic communities, our Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel performed the opening ceremony of this hostel.

"I want to study, but my parents won't allow me to study beyond 4th grade. Can you please tell them to allow me to go to school," Bharti tells Shri Bhupendrabhai when he is interacting with the children. On hearing this, Shri Patel gave clear instructions to the officials to make sure that their parents let the children here go to school.

The Chief Minister also gave a patient hearing to Suresh, Shailesh, Kokila and other children present at the occasion.

We are grateful to respected Shri Pradipbhai Parmar, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, who, after finishing a program at Dhansura drove for 4.5 hours to attend the event at Kankar. The event was also attended by other ministers,  District Collector Shri Anandbhai Patel and other dignitaries.

The presence of such dignitaries has enthused children towards going to school, hope the parents also show such spirit.

ભણતરની ભૂખ...

કાકરની ફુલવાદી વસાહતમાં બપોરના હું ફરી રહી હતી. એક છાપરાં પાસે મે ત્રણ બાળકોને ચુલા પર રોટલા ઘડતા જોયા. મે એમને પુછ્યું,

તમે કેમ રોટલા બનાવો? તમારા મા - બાપ?

મા- બાપ તો ધંધા અર્થે બહાર ગામ ગયા...

તે એ તમને પૈસા આપીને જાય?

હા દોઢસો - બસો આપીને જાય...

ક્યારે આપીને ગયેલા?

દોઢ મહિનો થયો..તે દોઢ મહિનો દોઢસો બસો રૃપિયાથી તો ન ચાલે..?

અમે શનિવારે સવારની નિશાળ હોય તે નિશાળ છુટે પછી અને રવીવાર આખો ભીખ માંગવા જઈએ.. એ દોઢ દિવસમાં જે ભેગુ થાય એનાથી અઠવાડિયું ચલાવીએ...

વિનુ સાતમાં ધોરણમાં ભણે એણે આ વિગત કહી.. 

સાંભળીને રૃવા઼ડાં ઊભા થઈ ગયા..

ફુલવાદી પરિવારોનો જ્યાં વસવાટ છે ત્યાં કાયમ કામ મળતું નથી માટે મોટેરા સ્થળાંતર કરે. મોટાભાગે બાળકો પણ મા -બાપ સાથે વિચરણ કરે. જે થોડા ઘણાને ભણવાનું મન હોય તે રોકાય ને પોતાની વ્યવસ્થા આ રીતે કરે. 

વળી નાતપંચના નિયમો પણ વિચિત્ર. દીકરીઓ 4 ધોરણથી આગળ ન ભણે ને છોકરાંઓ આઠ ધોરણથી આગળ ન ભણે...સમગ્ર સ્થિતિ સમજી અમે એમની વસાહતમાં છાત્રાલય બનાવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. કાર્યકરોને ડર આ લોકો આપણી વાત સમજશે કે નહીં તેને લઈને લાગ્યો. પણ હું કહું,  વાંસળી તો સહુ વગાડે સાંબેલું વગાડે તે સાચો. બસ કાકર ફુલવાદી વસાહતમાં અમારે સાંબેલું વગાડવાનું...

છાત્રાલય નિર્માણમાં મુખ્ય મદદ કરી. શ્રી પ્રવિણભાઈ શાહે. એમની સાથે જોડાયા જેવેલેક્ષ ફાઉન્ડેશનના શ્રી પિયુષભાઈ કોઠારી અને જેટકો... એ સિવાય પણ નાની મોટી મદદ સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજનોએ કરી અને એમની મદદથી કાકરમાં શ્રીમતી વિરાબહેન મેઘજીભાઈ શાહ(ચંદેરિયા) છાત્રાલયનું નિર્માણ થયું.

આ છાત્રાલયમાં 170 થી વધુ બાળકો રહીને ભણી શકશે. હવે કોઈને મરચુ રોટલો ખાવાનો વારો નહીં આવે. આમ તો બાળકો કહે, અમે સવારે દૂધ અને નાસ્તો કોઈ દિવસ કર્યો નહોતો. છાત્રાલયમાં એમને આ બધુ મળે. આ છાત્રાલયનું ઉદ્ધાટન માનનીય મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી ભુપેન્દ્રભાઈ પટેલે કાકરમાં બંધાયેલા 90 પરિવારોના ઘરોના ઉદધાટન પ્રસંગે કર્યું. તેમણે બાળકો સાથે વાત કરી જેમાં અમારી ભારતીએ ઊભા થઈને ભુપેન્દ્રભાઈને મારે ભણવું છે પણ મારા મા - બાપ મને ચોથાથી આગળ ભણાવવાની ના પાડે છે તો તમે એમને ક્યો ને કે મને ભણાવે એવું કહ્યું. 

સાંભળીને મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીએ તમામ અધિકારીઓને ફુલવાદી વસાહતના વાલીઓ સાથે બાળકોના ભણતર બાબતે વાત કરવા  ખાસ સૂચના  આપી...

સુરેશે, શૈલેશ, કોકીલા સૌએ મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી સમક્ષ ખુલીને વાત  કરી ને મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીએ સરસ રીતે વાત સાંભળી..

આદરણીય પ્રદિપભાઈ પરમાર મંત્રી શ્રી સામાજિક ન્યાય અને અધિકારીતા પણ આ પ્રસંગે ધનસુરાનો કાર્યક્રમ પતાવી સાડા ચાર કલાકનો પ્રવાસ કરીને ખાસ ઉપસ્થિત રહ્યા. તેમનો આભાર. 

સાથે અન્ય મંત્રી શ્રી કલેક્ટર શ્રી આનંદભાઈ વગેરે પણ હાજર રહ્યા. બાળકોને આ મહાનુભાવોને જોઈને ભણવાનો ઉત્સાહ જાગ્યો છે. બસ વાલીઓમાં પણ ઉત્સાહ જાગે તો ઘણું..આભાર મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી, પ્રદિપભાઈ અને  અન્ય સન્માનીય ગણનો..

 “Didi, please don’t take Urmiladidi and Kailashdidi from here!”

“Why?”

“We will not like without them. Can’t you let them be here?”

“But they have to study further, they will have to leave.”

“Please don’t do that!!”

Little Bharti and Kokila had been arguing with me for letting Urmila and Kailash stay at Kankar Hostel. VSSM has just began operating the Hostel at Kakar settlement it has built for the children of Vadi community.  The Vadi community continues to migrate for work as a result the education of their children is compromised as children do get enrolled but cannot continue with the school because they need to tag their parents. The hostel allows the parents to keep their children with us while they continuously  wander for work.

Urmila and Kailash have been studying with VSSM operated hostel at Ahmedabad. They finished their 12th grade recently.  Very soon they will be joining the Nursing College at Goraj near Baroda. Shri Piyushbhai (Jewelex Foundation) has helped us with their fees.

Since there was some time in between (the college begins in January) Dimpleben arranged for the girls to volunteer at the newly set up Kakar hostel.  During their tenure at Kakar hostel both the girls bonded so well with the little ones at Kakar that it was difficult to bid adieu now that their college begins. Children at Kakar learnt that Urmila-Kailash were to leave hence they started persuading me to let the duo stay at Kakar. Kokila and Bharti led the chorus. “Didi, we had so much fun with all of them that we will want to spend all or vacations with these children,” Kailash-Urmila tell me.

The children at VSSM operated hostels are raised to imbibe the ethos of the phrase Vasudhaiv Kutumbkam (the world is one family), the reason these children shower so much affection on each other.

Well, I could not obey Bharti and Kokila’s request but did promise Kailash and Urmila to bring them at Kakar during their vacations.

Such episodes make you believe that  world could definitely be a glorious place if each of us showered such affection on the other. 

'દીદી તમે ઊર્મીલાદીદી અને કૈલાશદીદીને અહીંયાથી લઈ નહીં જાવ ને?'

'કેમ?'

'અમને એમના વગર ના હોરવે.. તમે એમને અહીંયા જ રાખો ને?'

'પણ એ બેઉને તો આગળ ભણવાનું છે તો જવું તો પડશે..'

'ના એમ ના કરો...'

મારી સાથે ઊર્મીલા ને કૈલાશને ન લઈ જવા દલીલ કરી રહી હતી નાનકડી ટબુડિયો ભારતી અને કોકીલા..

બનાસકાંઠાના કાકરમાં અમે ફુલવાદી વસાહતમાં એમના બાળકો ભણી શકે તે માટે હોસ્ટેલ શરૃ કરી. મૂળ મા-બાપ કામ ધંધા માટે ઘણું વિચરણ કરે ને બાળકોને પણ સાથે લઈ જાય. એટલે બાળકોનું ભણવાનું બગડે તે હોસ્ટેલ હોય તો બાળકોને મુકીને જઈ શકે માટે.

ઊર્મીલા અને કોકિલા અમદાવાદમાં ચાલતી અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં રહીને ધો.12 ભણી. આ બેઉને નર્સીગ ભણવું હતું તે વડોદરાના ગોરજમાં આવેલી નર્સીગ કોલેજમાં એમને પ્રવેશ મળ્યો. બેઉની ફી ભરવામાં અમને આદરણીય પિયુષભાઈ જવેલેક્ષ ફાઉન્ડેશને મદદ કરી. 

આ બે દીકરીઓની કોલેજ જાન્યુઆરીથી શરૃ થવાની. તે બેઉને કાકરમાં શરૃ કરેલી અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં મહિનો સેવા આપવા જવાનું અમારા ડીમ્પલબેને ગોઠવ્યું. 

કૈલાશ અને ઊર્મીલા કાકર ગયા ને બાળકો ભેગા એવા હળી મળી ગયા કે હવે બેઉની કોલેજ શરૃ થવાનો ને કાકરથી વિદાય લેવાનો વખત થયો.. 

હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા બાળકોને આ ખબર પડી એટલે આ બેઉને નહીં લઈ જાવની ભલામણ શરૃ થઈ.

કોકીલા ને ભારતી એ માટે પહેલ કરી ને પછી હોસ્ટેલની બધી ટાબરે પણ ન લઈ જાવનું રટણ...

કૈલાશ ને ઊર્મીલાને પણ આ બાળકો સાથે મજા પડી એમણે કહ્યું, દીદી દરેક વેકેશનમાં હવે અમે આ બાળકો પાસે જ આવીશું. 

અમારા ત્યાં ભણતા બાળકોને અમે સમગ્ર વિશ્વ એક કુટુંબની ભાવના શીખવીએ.. એટલે જ આ બાળકો એકબીજા પ્રત્યે આટલું હેત રાખી શકે. 

પણ આવું હેત સૌ એકબીજા પર વર્ષાવે તો દુનિયા કેવી મજાની થઈ જાય નહીં?

ફોટોમાં કોકીલા અને ભારતી જે દીદીને ન લઈ જવા કહી રહી છે તે મારી પાછળ.. ને હોસ્ટેલના એ હોલની બહાર નીકળીને  તો બધા એકદમ ઘેરી વળીને ન લઈ જવાની વાત ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય...

“How many of you drink alcohol?”

Had this question been raised at a gathering of addicts, most of them would either deny or choose to remain silent. But the group I had posed the question to are the children from our brand new hostel at Kankar. I had assumed that they might either not reply or deny but to my utter surprise, around 25 of them raised their hands.

I asked them to separate from the group and be seated at one side of the room.

“How many of you smoke bidi?” was my next question.

The question made them break into a burst of mellow laughter. Some 15 more stood up and asked them to sit before me.

My plan that day was to talk to these kids ranging between the ages of 7 to 14 years, to give up their addictions.

Recently, we opened the doors of Kakar hostel. The hostel will house children of Fulvadi community when their parents are away for a large part of the year for work. The hostels we operate are not strict correction homes,  rather they become second homes to the children we house. The children at Kankar hostel share their time between their home and hostel, which are in the same settlement. We never forbid them to go home or do what they wish. The idea is to be their mentor, not master.  The ease of non-restrictive movement between hostel and home these kids enjoyed brought to our attention the addictions these children carry. They would sneak out to puff the bidi they have buried underground in plastic bags.

The pocket money their parents give is used to buy these addictions.

My conversation with these children began with praising and applauding all those who admitted to addictions. All of us gave an ovation to the children for their righteousness. A moral story was shared, there were some jovial interactions through the hour we talked about the need to give up the habits that harm their well-being.

“Now tell me, will you be able to give up daru-bidi?” I asked.

“Yes didi!” all except three replied in unison.

“We find it hard, we won’t lie to you but it will not be possible for us to give up our addictions,” was a very honest response from the remaining three.

How could we not honour such honesty? We applauded the three for their truthfulness.

The ones who had shown willingness to give up their addictions pledged to Fulbai Ma and Lord Shankar.

“What if you continue even after taking this pledge?” I asked.

“Fulbai Ma will come after me!” was Vinu’s innocent response.

All of them took an oath before Saraswati Ma.

“Didi I want to take a pledge, but I feel afraid, what if I cannot remain committed?” Hari, one of the three boys,  came forward.

“Believe in yourself and almighty. You will be able to give up!” I assured.

Apprehensive Hari; took a pledge, so did the other two.

If these children need to be corrected,  it is through abundant love and support and not battering. I am sure they will come around.

I am sure these kids when they grow up to become officers, businessmen, farmers, cattle breeders and reminisce their childhood anecdotes will have this to say…  “As a kid, I  was addicted to smoking and drinking but gave it all up when I was educated about the harm it does. Look where I am today.!” They will have such inspiring stories to share.

Currently, 63 children are enrolled at Kakar hostel from June the number will swell up to  160 boys and girls.

We are grateful to all who have supported our dream of building this hostel.

'તમારામાંથી દારૃ કોણ પીવે છે?'

સામાન્ય રીતે વ્યસન કરનાર વ્યક્તિને આ પુછીએ તો એ પોતે વ્યસન નથી કરતો એમ જ કહેશે.. પણ જેમને હું પુછી રહી હતી તે તો અમારી ટાબર(બાળકો). જવાબ નહીં આપે કે ખોટુ કહેશે એમ સામાન્ય રીતે લાગે પણ આશ્ચર્ય વચ્ચે પચીસેક જણે હાથ ઉપર કર્યા. 

મે એમને ઊભા થઈને મારી બાજુની ખાલી જગ્યામાં એમને બેસવા કહ્યું. 

એ પછી મારો બીજો પ્રશ્ન, 

'બીડી કેટલા પીવે છે?' મારો પ્રશ્ન સાંભળી બધા બચ્ચા નીચું મોઢુ કરી ખીખી કરી હસવા લાગ્યા ને ધીરે રહીને બીજા પંદરેક જણા ઊભા થયા.

મે એમને પણ ઊભા થઈને મારી સામે બેસવા કહ્યું..

7 થી લઈને 14 વર્ષના આ બાળકોને મારે વ્યસન ન કરવા સમજાવવાનું હતું. 

અમે કાકરમાં હોસ્ટેલ શરૃ કરી. પણ બાળકો ઉપર અમે કડક જાપતો ન રાખીએ.. ઘર એમનું હોસ્ટેલની સામે.  મન થાય તો એ ઘરે પણ જાય અમે એમને ન રોકીએ. મૂળ દબાણ કરીએ ને ભણવા પરથી એનું મન ઊઠી જાય એવું અમારે નહોતું કરવું માટે આ છૂટછાટ આપેલી..

પણ આ છુટછાટમાં એ વ્યસન કરતા હોવાનું ધ્યાને આવ્યું. દર એકાદ બે કલાકે ટચલી આંગળી બતાવીને યુરીનલ માટે, ઘર યાદ આવે છે વગેરે જેવા બહાના કરે ને હોસ્ટેલના પ્રાંગણની બહાર જઈને જમીનમાં સંતાડી રાખેલી પ્લાસ્ટીકની કોથળી બહાર કાઢી એમાંથી બીડી ને અન્ય ચીજોના ચુસકા લગાવે..

મા- બાપ થોડા પૈસા વાપરવા આપીને ગયેલા એમાંથી બીડી ને બીજુ બધુયે આમ તો બીડી માટે તો ઠૂંઠાય ચાલે..

વ્યસન કરે છેની કબુલાત કરનાર સૌને પહેલાં તો તેમની સચ્ચાઈ માટે ત્રણ તાલીનું માન આપ્યું..પછી એમને સમજાય તેવી નાનકડી વાર્તોઓમાંથી તેમને બોધપાઠ મળે તે માટે કોશીશ કરી. થોડા પ્રશ્નો, થોડી રમૂજ, નાનકડી વાતોનો દોર લગભગ કલાક ચાલ્યો.. 

પછી પુછ્યું, 

'બોલો છૂટશે વ્યસન?' 

ને ત્રણ સિવાય બાકી બધાએ એક સૂરે કહ્યું, 'હા દીદી...'

ત્રણે કહ્યું, 'અમને અઘરુ લાગે છે.. જુઠ નહીં બોલીયે પણ નહીં છુટે..'

આ ત્રણે માટે તો વિશેષ પ્રેમ વ્યક્ત કર્યો સૌએ ફરી ત્રણ તાલીનું માન આપ્યું. 

જેમણે છુટી જશેનું કહ્યું એ સૌએ મા ફુલબઈ અને ભોળા શંકરની શાખે પવિત્ર જળના સપથ લીધા. 

મે કહ્યું, 'જળ લીધા પછી વ્યસન કર્યું તો?'

તો વીનુએ કહ્યું, 'મા ફુલબઈ મન ઝાલ...'

કેવી નિખાલશ કબુલાતો... બધાએ સરસસ્તી માના ફોટો સામે પ્રતિક રૃપે જળ મુક્યું... જે ત્રણે ના પાડી હતી તેમાંથી હરી પ્રથમ આવ્યો, 

'દીદી નહીં થાય તો? મારે જળ મુકવું છે પણ બીક આવે છે!'

મે કહ્યું, 'તારામાં ને પછી ઈશ્વરમાં શ્રદ્ધા રાખ થઈ જશે..'

ને હરીએ ડરતાં ડરતાં પાણી મુક્યુ ને પછી તો બાકીના બેયે પણ...

પવિત્ર બાળકો મારઝૂડ કરવાથી એને વારી ન શકાય પણ મબલખ - લખલૂટ પ્રેમ આપીયે તો એ વળી જાય.. 

આ ટાબરમાંથી કાલ કોઈ મોટો અધિકારી, ધંધાદારી, પશુપાલક, ખેડૂત બનશે ને પોતાની કહાણી આપણા સૌ સામે કહેશે. 

જ્યારે હું નાનો હતો ત્યારે બીડી - દારૃ પીતો પણ સમજણ પડી ને મુક્યું.. તો જુઓ આજે હું ક્યાં છુ.... આવી કાંઈ કેટલીયે પ્રેરણાદાયી વાતોનો ખજાનો એમની પાસે હશે... 

કાકરની અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં હાલ 63 બાળકો ભણે છે. જુનથી 160 દીકરા દીકરીઓ આ હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણશે.. હોસ્ટેલ બાંધકામમાં મદદ કરનાર સૌ સ્નેહીજનોનો આભાર...
