The students from our hostels participated in a Youth Festival at District & State level...

Our Hsotel girls performing at Youth Festival

Healthy competition is good for the growth of a person. That is why during school  times the students are encouraged to participate in various competitions. The win-lose during these competitions help one to understand the ups and downs of life and the strength to withstand the tough times.

VSSM runs two hostels. One is in Kakar village in Banaskantha district. The other one called Vishwa Mangalam is in Himmatnagar managed in association with Vishwamangalam Trust. The girls staying in this hostel take training to learn music. Their progress is gauged in the competition they participate in.

Recently a Youth Festival at District & State level was organised. In this, the students from our hostels participated. They came first in a group & musical song category at the District level. At the State level they finished honourable fourth in a competition organised at Hemchandra University in Patan.

They had trained hard for the first position but  there were others who were better. However, every participant learns much more about life than just about competition.

The students were encouraged by Mayankbhai Jadhav, Nalinbhai, Bijalbhai, Ghanshyambhai, Dimpleben and Vanita.

The participants who performed brilliantly were Rekha, Shilpa, Puri, Apeksha, Jiya, Jhanvi & Mittal. Our congratulations to them. We wish them bigger success in their future endeavours.

Nomadic children studying at VSSM comes out with flying colours...

Asha and Sanjana in studious mood
Asha arrived at our hostel with aspirations to become a doctor one day, she secured 93.47 percentile. Sanjana dreams herself of being a Bank Manager, Math grades were not as expected but her percentile is very good too.

VSSM operates two hostels, one each for girls and boys. This year 11 girls appeared for class 10th board examinations of whom 10 cleared their exams while 16 of the 25 boys who had appeared for the 10th boards cleared the exams. As always, girls out-performed boys. Our Khuma shined with her performance.
Nomadic girls at our hostel

Many of our children who appeared for the 10th boards this year are interested in taking up government jobs, they are working hard to realise their aspirations of securing these positions. VSSM will ensure these children receive all the required support to realise their career goals.

Nomadic girls at our hostel
The children from the nomadic and de-notified communities who arrive at the hostels after having gone to government schools in their respective village are extremely poor at their reading writing skills. Unfortunately, a class 7 child can barely read or write to the expected level.

Jaya who now is into 3rd year of graduation says, “Didi, I did not even know how to read until 7th grade. I began learning after arriving at the hostel where I had worked on my fundamentals.” Today, Jaya is a college topper in Sociology.

Once the child is enrolled in one of our hostel’s, begins the exercise of bringing the child at par with the expected level of learning, to prepare them for 10th grade is the toughest part. Under the leadership of Dimpleben, VSSM’s education team comprising of Vanita, Pravin, Kokila, Valji, Bijol, Kiranm Vijay, Nareshbhai work tirelessly and passionately. And the results of their efforts are visible with the performance of children both in academics and co-curricular activities.

One has to be fortunate enough to have a team as dedicated and hardworking as ours. VSSM is blessed with a wonderful team. Also crucial is the support of donors and well-wishers that enables us to continue on our journey.

Our children attend private schools when they are at the hostel, the teachers of these schools have played an integral part in educating and training them well. We shall always be grateful to respected Shri. Muktbhai, Shri. Harshbhai and the Principal Ms Hetalbahen of H. B. Kapadia school our girls attend. Our children were like rough diamonds, their teachers nurtured and brought out the spark in them. We also received similar support from the Trustees and staff of Paras School our boys attend. We will remain eternally grateful to you all.

Our insistence of bringing better results in grade 10th is because there are many children who may not be able to cope with the academic requirements of 11th and 12th grades. Once gauging their inclination and preference, we enrol these children in various technical-vocational courses that require a child to have cleared 10th grade.

Freedom from Boredom through E-Learning

Boys at G U Hostel Parading on Independence Day
Not one or two but two hundred boys study while staying in our G U Shah hostel at Naroda. Who likes to put their head in the book and study all day? Moreover, all our children ace in mischief. Sitting for an hour seems like punishment to them.

Sparsh Trust and Maharshibhai Dave made an arrangement of E-Learning to make such kids study without getting bored. Thank you Maharshibhai and Sparsh Trust.

Children celebrated 15th August- Independence Day cheerfully. They did parade in the Hostel. They won the prize of Rs. 1500/- in Pyramid competition at the school they are studying.

E-Learning at G U Hostel run by VSSM

Mittal Patel attended the E-Learning screening and Independence Day

Blessed to be nurturing such beautiful children…

Priti with Mittal Patel at the VSSM girls Hostel, Ahmedabad
“The Didis are complaining about you that Priti takes things from everyone’s bags and cupboards, is that true?”
She nodded in affirmation.
“What do you take?”
She chose to remain quiet.
“Money?” I asked.
“No.”
“Hairbands?
‘No.”
“Clothes?”
“No.”
“Notebooks?”
“No.”
“Pencil?”
“No.”
I continued asked about stuff that could be lifted and Priti continued to deny.
“So, can you tell me what do you lift?”
“Sharpener.”
“Oh ok, and?”
“Eraser.”
“Ah, is it.”
“Foot ruler.”
“What else?”
“That’s it!!”
“Why only this much?”
“That is because, I am fond of them!”
I was enjoying this conversation. It made me nostalgic, of times when Kiara was a junior KG student and came back with lots of such stuff in her pencil box. And she too would tell me the same thing.
“It is not appropriate to lift things without asking,” I told Priti.
She just refused without opening her mouth, “It is called robbery, a sin!”
“Oh, who told you that? And why did you do it even when you knew it is wrong?”
“Because I like them so much, Didi!”
It was hard not to fall for her innocence and humbleness.
“Next time you crave for sharpener, foot-rule and eraser come to me, I shall give them to you and promise me that you will never take anything without asking again.”
I stretched my hand towards Priti asking for her commitment.
“I will not take anything, I promise!” she voiced loudly and gave me a high-five.
“But what if you continue with your habit even after promising me not to!”
“Will accept whatever punishment God gives me,” she told me looking at the sky.
“God will put a big ball in your tummy, you won’t be unable to eat. So, think before you promise. Children like you are very dear to God so they aren’t punished. He forgives children but places a ball in their tummy.”
“I will never repeat this again!!”

I felt the need to share this experience with you all to give a glimpse of how children think and act and how we as adults misinterpret their behaviour. We are blessed to be taking care of such fantastic children. They never hesitate to confess their mistakes. They have learnt their lessons well at the hostel and chose to be righteous in their conduct. We are sure our training and guidance will help them become better humans and that is what we wish to achieve because, we need to think beyond the stereotypes.

VSSM will always remain grateful to its well-wishers to help ensure girls like Janki and Bhoomi realize their dreams...

Bhoomi and Janki's parents came to drop them for the
first time at our unnati hostel and takes a picture with
Mittal Patel
My daughter-in-law is pride and joy of my family…

Janki and Bhoomi's family members sharing their sentiments
with Mittal Patel
“My daughter-in-law is a very obedient and good natured human being. It is because of her  my daughters (grand-daughters) are studying. Both, my husband’s and my parents died when we were very young. We have endured lot of pain growing up. I have four daughters and one son. My son hasn’t done well in life. It is my daughter-in-law who works hard to support the family. Please educate my girls, my Janki and Bhoomi, very well. They are the ray of hope for my family. We trust you with them and give you freedom to raise them well and scold them if required. We shall never ever come complaining.”

Janki and Bhoomi’s grandmother Vechima had tears in her eyes when she shared her sentiments with us. Vechi Ma is extremely proud of her daughter-in-law Kamlaben. It felt good to hear a mother-in-law appreciate her daughter-in-law so much. Infact, Kamlaben is truly a wonderful lady. She stays and works as cooking help in Deesa. The money earned is spent on sustaining the family. She definitely wishes that her girls study well and grow up to shine their family’s name.

Janki and Bhoomi both aspire to become a doctor. They are moderate in studies but look forward to completing their education. “We do not have enough money to educate both  our daughters. However, VSSM’s Shardaben has been instrumental in bringing these girls to the hostel. “My in-laws wanted to see where our girls are studying that is why I have brought them here.  We are delighted to see them do well.” Kamlaben explained to us as a matter of fact. Naturally, a photo op with such fantastic family had to be mandatory!!

These girls are Rajgour and study with 70 other girls in a leading private school of Ahmedabad almong with 70 other girls. Our well wishing friends, with their continued support have been helping us ensure girls like Janki and Bhoomi realize their dream. We will always remain grateful for this support.

Hopefully, one day these girls will realize their dreams…….

Ramaben Chuvadiya's daughters Kinjal wishes to join police force while 6 year old Vandan wants to fly aircrafts!!

Ramaben Chuvadiya with Mittal Patel and her daughters
at our Unnati Hostel
“My Kinjal wants to join police force when she grows up, seriously!!” she said with a smirk. “He has been drinking a lot. And this leads to daily quarrels. Unfortunately, my daughters have to witness  all such fights. I could not send my elder daughters Anju and Kajal to school because we never had enough money. I am so happy  now that my Kinjal and Poonam are studying with you. Last year Poori also joined her two elder sisters. I haven’t studied much hence, earn living doing all sort of random labour works like working on farm or work at coal making. My elder daughters also join me and help earn for the family. Their father has injured his back in an accident and hence cannot work, leaving  the responsibility of earning for the family on us. We have a small piece of land but, this year’s rain washed away our land. The well also needs to be repaired. We do not have money to get such jobs done. If you could give us some loan we can repair the land and the well and cultivate it to earn a little extra.”

Extremely upfront Ramaben Chuvadiya is from Tarkiya village and stays in a hut made of mud and cow dung. She comes to drop her daughters twice a year and visits them whenever she feels like seeing them. “Ben, you please take care of my daughters. They are my future!” Her daughters too are extremely hardworking and polite. Very nice daughters, indeed.

Three years ago, Ramaben borrowed Rs. 500 to send Kinjal to VSSM operated hostel. The money was to buy things that she might need at the hostel. Few days into the hostel life Kinjal began feeling lonely and complained of not liking it here and wanting to quit studying. This saddened Ramaben. “I went against your father’s wish, have spent Rs. 500 to bring you here, the community had laughed at me and now if you do not complete your studies people will make fun of me.” This was the only time Ramaben was required to talk like this with Kinjal. After this episode, Kinjal has never complained and puts hard work in studies. If she does not get into police force she wishes to be a lawyer.

Ramaben has six daughters. The youngest Vandan who just turned 6 will also be in our hostel next year. And she wishes to be a pilot someday!!!

“Ramaben, may all the daughters of this land be fortunate enough to have a mother like you. We salute your spirit, resolve and commitment. You are an inspiration to many and a living example of inherent power that women possess…”

We have decided to extend Rs. 50,000 as interest free loan to Ramaben, will be giving her the cheque within two days. The money will be utilized to repair the land and the well.

We wish you mental peace and prosperity always!!

In the picture - The beautiful moments we get to spend with some fiery human begins!! That is us Ramaben, her daughters and I….

Manisha is the brightest amoungst Babiben and Bhagabhai Devipujak’s 8 children.

Smiling Manisha Devipujak with Mittal Patel after the
emotional moments
Manisha Devipujak's parents came to drop her for the
first time at our hostel
Manisha is the brightest amoungst Babiben and Bhagabhai Devipujak’s 8 children. “Ben, I suffer from ulcers and remain ill most of the time. It would be impossible for me to come to drop Manisha every time. Consider her your own child and take care of her like so,” Bhagabhai had requested me when he had come to drop Manisha to the hostel for the first time. “I sell vegetables to earn living for the entire family, my husband  cannot work hard because of his medical condition, I travel to Rajkot every morning to buy vegetables at wholesale rates. I have a desire to make Manisha a doctor but we are too poor to afford her educational expenses.  I have heard that you educate children of poor like us hence, have brought my Manisha here. Now you are her parent, make her a doctor please!!” Babiben had shown so much confidence in us.

This was two years ago.

Manisha Devipujak on TV
Manisha is sharp and smart but a very sensitive and emotional child. Today she returned back to hostel after the Diwali vacation. On return she immediately came to my office, she utters “Didi….” And starts crying… we tried consoling her. After she could stop crying, “I feel sad at looking at my mother’s plight. She changes three rides to reach Rajkot to buy vegetables and does the same on her return. Two days back her finger got crushed while trying to shut the tempo door she was traveling in, she had fever because of that yet, she did not take a day off. She is worried the family will not have enough to eat if she takes a day off. Today she was very sad a because I had to return to the hostel and no one was in position to come and drop mel! I want to help her but just cannot do anything from here. Can’t you do something to help her?”

We asked Manisha to inquire what her mother needs and we told her to work very hard and focus on her studies so that she could be an earning member of her family and share her mother’s burden.

Manisha, as such is a very brave, intelligent and smart child but today she in distress and she got extremely emotional while talking to us. “Didi, will I be able to become a doctor one day?” she shared her turmoil.

“Why not? If you work hard you definitely will and don’t worry if we do not get you into medical course we will surely get you into nursing program. It is a similar profession.” This brought a smile on her face. On her way out she shared, “Didi, it takes quite a while to walk to school and all the three tuitions. If I get a cycle the commute will become a bit faster. Sir comes and picks me up if we request him to do so but it does not look nice to call up three different tuition teachers who are otherwise very busy with their own schedule.”

We definitely need to get a cycle for this committed and loving little girl.

The moment Manisha walked out of the office, we received a call from her mother, to inquire if Manisha had reached well and to bless us all. “Next year I am coming there with 10 Devipujak girls who are eager to come and study there. They all got excited when they saw Manisha on TV during 26th January program. Can you imagine a vegetable vendor’s daughter speaking on TV. Everyone in my village saw her on TV and began asking me to take their daughters to the same hostel where Manisha is studying…. They have realized education ensures better future!!”

That is Babiben who has not climbed a single step to school. How we wish all mothers have the same vision like her!!

“Manisha, you continue to work hard and realize your dream of becoming health provider in your village. Much love to you my child.”

In the pictures….Manisha on TV, when her parents came to drop her for the first time at the hostel and smiling Manisha after the emotional moments.

Our precious girls have come a long way, it has been a remarkable journey!!

Gujarat Samachar a leading Gujarati daily did an apt story
on the hostel and our girls

The normal visual that sweeps across our minds when we think of our girls who had just initiated into the hostel was something like this, shouting at each other, feast-fighting for irrelevant matters, using foul and abusive language, never liked to follow any time-table, disliked going to the school (as good as H. B. Kapadia)! The school hours seemed constraining to them as they could hardly sit still at one place beyond 15-20 minutes. The white leggings that are a part of their school uniform turned greyish black by the time they had finished their day at the school.  School shoes were something they dreaded to wear because they are used to walking without any footwear. They always looked for an opportunity where they could escape our sight and go to school wearing chappals. To escape doing homework they formed a habit of hiding the home-work notebook at such a place that it would be practically impossible find it!! The food was always eaten oh, not eaten gulped down with two hands!  Our nomadic girls were required to change their social skills in more than one way….

We wouldn’t say this was a wrong conduct but to help them socialize better we needed to groom them.  Nurturing these girls required a trained warden but, the wardens are usually believed to be stern, a quality our girls feared. Hence, we managed it with our own team and gradually noticed change all of them underwent. They began getting involved in the daily operation of the hostel, took responsibility of their peers and changed their conduct for better. At times, we needed to threaten them, “if you all refuse to behave properly, we will need to assign these tasks to a house warden!!” And such soft threats always made a proactive impact.

At times when the going gets difficult, they need to be lectured to which they say, “why don’t you make a CD of your lectures, whenever we experience the urge to behaving the old way, we will play this CD and remain sober!” Aren’t they smart, witty, sharp and extremely naughty?

Gujarat Samachar, a leading Gujarati daily did an apt story on the hostel and our girls…

We are grateful to our donors who have been instrumental in helping these girls achieve their dreams…

Winning the real games….

A picture with these naughty bunch was mandatory after all, they
went on to win a different kind of game ……
Suddenly there was a wave of cheer and chirpy sounds all around, “Didi, we stood first in the tug of war game.” Our girls were all jubilant as they narrated their achievement. Their joy was contagious and obviously I too was infected by it….
“So how many girls had participated… how many were competing against you?” was my obvious question!!
“Oh, Didi there were many and all of them quite strong and stout and look at the skinny us.”
“So, how many competed against you?”
“We were so nervous about this event, everyone was all prepped up….” the chorus continued, it stirred the stillness that prevailed in the office… the chatter continued but none of them answered my questions. After all the girl-talk were over with they all decided to leave, “Can we all go?” they asked. I replied in affirmative. While everyone walked out, Kinjal opted to stay-back. Kinjal is daughter of charcoal makers. The family survives in absolute poverty. Her mother assists father in coal making. Kinjal and her sister Poonam stay with this hostel and they have a younger sister who is all set to tag them next year. The mother has bigger and better dreams for her daughters some of which her daughters have taken a cue of, why else would Kinjal plans to join the police force when she grows up??
Kinjal stood at the door, “Didi, I want to speak to you..” she became quite, there was another girl Bhoomi with her too.
“Yes, tell me what is it??”
“Didi, we never competed with anyone. There was no one against us. Hence, we were declared undisputed winners. You asked us many times but, none of us replied. We cannot lie! If we had not told you the truth we wouldn’t have liked our meals!! Hiding the truth would have pained us.”
Bhoomi also joined the narrative.
I was happy the girls spoke truth and commended their righteousness. Yes, they were winners and that was a matter to rejoice. “To participate in a competition is important but to have the courage to speak the truth is even more important and since you all showed that courage you have won another important lesson in life!!”
There was cheer and jubilation all around. Our girls were all cheering and shouting with joy. “we won, we won… no one dared to participate on knowing they were to compete against us…we won..”
We are glad our girls are understanding and following the true lessons of life. It is ok if they do not become an engineer or doctor. I am sure they will go on to win many challenges if they become better humans!!
Our hostels have 140 and 190 of such naughty and fierce girls and boys staying in it. So what if they get down to verbal abuse at every juncture? they are fun and honest and innocent...
A picture with these naughty bunch was mandatory after all, they went on to win a different kind of game ……

After the fight of VSSM, school authorities agreed to allow the Nomadic children into the school….. The continued struggle for inclusion..

Nomadic families parents
with the children who have been refused admissions….
The children of nomadic communities have historically never been to school. It is a huge-huge challenge to bring these children to school, in fact to build the environment of learning in each settlement is a great task, right from acclimatising the children to sensitising the parents and school authorities. So when 9 children belonging to Vansfoda community were suddenly removed from the school by its principal, it sent a wave of shock and anger amidst the team of VSSM and community.

The children of 9 Vansfoda families living in Gondal had never been to school. But the pre-condition set by VSSM’s Kanubhai of not working for people whose children aren't in school compelled the parents to send their children to nearby school. In June 2016 VSSM’s Kanubhai enrolled these children in the primary school near their settlement. This nearest school was still quite a distance for the children to walk two times daily.  Hence an auto-rickshaw to ferry the children to school was hired at the cost of Rs. 300 per child.

However, the teachers did not like these children attending school, four days later the children were removed from the school. The young children had to walk back home. This continued for another 5 days. The children went to school but the teachers would remove them from classes and send them back. It did not feel right hence one of the members from the community Hameerbhai informed Kanubhai about this daily scenario. Kanubhai accompanied with the parents reached the school to meet the principal and the reasons he listed for removing the children were shocking and unbelievable.

The admissions were late (after the completion of admission dates)
The children are filthy and duffer. They would spoil the school results.
They have no birth-certificates, nor do they have any school dress

After hearing what the principal had to say Kanubhai just couldn’t take anymore. He gave his peace of mind to the school authorities who then agreed to allow the children into the school…..

What more can we say of the way systems work and the multiple issues the team of VSSM is tackles on daily basis… it is for the team we have that we can redress such unwarranted yet complex issues….

Doliya Girls Hostel for Nomadic Community Girls

"So that they are treated with love and care  and do not face discrimination…” was the sole reason that prompted us to begin  hostels for nomadic children.

Doliya Girls Hostel for Nomadic Community Girls
How to bring the children of nomadic communities to school was an extremely pressing issue for VSSM when it began working with the communities almost a decade ago. It began with enrolling  children from these communities to hostels and Ashram Shalas functioning in various parts of Gujarat.

In the year 2011 VSSM enrolled 7 girls in a government aided hostel run by an organisation in Dodiya village of Surendranagar district. Some how we got a  feeling that the decision of enrolling the girls was forced upon them. The authorities and the warden both did not look prepared to host these girls but for the reasons best to their knowledge they did not refuse admission to the girls. All the time,  for three days the girls stayed there, we felt that they weren’t welcoming enough and heisted to embrace the girls. From the moment they walked in the hostel  the girls faced discriminatory behaviour from the authorities and fellow residents. VSSM’s Ilaben,  a Baldost,  who taught these girls was accompanying them so as to help them settle down. Ilaben was uncomfortable with the way these girls were treated by the warden. On the fourth day when she had to leave the hostel, she called us up saying, “ I don’t feel like leaving these girls here!! They aren’t received well here, in such circumstances whom to trust them with is the question nagging me!!” After learning in detail about the entire situation we decided to call the girls back in just three days.

The episode made us believe that things hadn’t changed a bit since  2006-07 the year when we had enrolled a substantial number of nomadic children in various hostels and all of them came back within few weeks of enrolment.  6 years down the line  the situation remained the same.In any hostel that we enrolled the children from nomadic communities they faced same discriminatory behaviour from the authorities as well as fellow hostel mates.

What next was the  question staring at us?? The Baldosts advised us to start our very own residential facility where each child is treated with love, care and dignity. We shared this thought with our well-wishers who whole heartedly accepted the suggestion.

The Doliya Girls Hostel began with 7 girls in a rented premises at Jain Heetwardhak Mandal. Today 69 girls are staying with the Doliya hostel and studying at the government school in Doliya, the entire expense of which is supported by The Giant Group of Central Mumbai and whenever needed respected Shri. Chandrakantbhai Gogri also extends his support.
