 “Didi, please don’t take Urmiladidi and Kailashdidi from here!”

“Why?”

“We will not like without them. Can’t you let them be here?”

“But they have to study further, they will have to leave.”

“Please don’t do that!!”

Little Bharti and Kokila had been arguing with me for letting Urmila and Kailash stay at Kankar Hostel. VSSM has just began operating the Hostel at Kakar settlement it has built for the children of Vadi community.  The Vadi community continues to migrate for work as a result the education of their children is compromised as children do get enrolled but cannot continue with the school because they need to tag their parents. The hostel allows the parents to keep their children with us while they continuously  wander for work.

Urmila and Kailash have been studying with VSSM operated hostel at Ahmedabad. They finished their 12th grade recently.  Very soon they will be joining the Nursing College at Goraj near Baroda. Shri Piyushbhai (Jewelex Foundation) has helped us with their fees.

Since there was some time in between (the college begins in January) Dimpleben arranged for the girls to volunteer at the newly set up Kakar hostel.  During their tenure at Kakar hostel both the girls bonded so well with the little ones at Kakar that it was difficult to bid adieu now that their college begins. Children at Kakar learnt that Urmila-Kailash were to leave hence they started persuading me to let the duo stay at Kakar. Kokila and Bharti led the chorus. “Didi, we had so much fun with all of them that we will want to spend all or vacations with these children,” Kailash-Urmila tell me.

The children at VSSM operated hostels are raised to imbibe the ethos of the phrase Vasudhaiv Kutumbkam (the world is one family), the reason these children shower so much affection on each other.

Well, I could not obey Bharti and Kokila’s request but did promise Kailash and Urmila to bring them at Kakar during their vacations.

Such episodes make you believe that  world could definitely be a glorious place if each of us showered such affection on the other. 

'દીદી તમે ઊર્મીલાદીદી અને કૈલાશદીદીને અહીંયાથી લઈ નહીં જાવ ને?'

'કેમ?'

'અમને એમના વગર ના હોરવે.. તમે એમને અહીંયા જ રાખો ને?'

'પણ એ બેઉને તો આગળ ભણવાનું છે તો જવું તો પડશે..'

'ના એમ ના કરો...'

મારી સાથે ઊર્મીલા ને કૈલાશને ન લઈ જવા દલીલ કરી રહી હતી નાનકડી ટબુડિયો ભારતી અને કોકીલા..

બનાસકાંઠાના કાકરમાં અમે ફુલવાદી વસાહતમાં એમના બાળકો ભણી શકે તે માટે હોસ્ટેલ શરૃ કરી. મૂળ મા-બાપ કામ ધંધા માટે ઘણું વિચરણ કરે ને બાળકોને પણ સાથે લઈ જાય. એટલે બાળકોનું ભણવાનું બગડે તે હોસ્ટેલ હોય તો બાળકોને મુકીને જઈ શકે માટે.

ઊર્મીલા અને કોકિલા અમદાવાદમાં ચાલતી અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં રહીને ધો.12 ભણી. આ બેઉને નર્સીગ ભણવું હતું તે વડોદરાના ગોરજમાં આવેલી નર્સીગ કોલેજમાં એમને પ્રવેશ મળ્યો. બેઉની ફી ભરવામાં અમને આદરણીય પિયુષભાઈ જવેલેક્ષ ફાઉન્ડેશને મદદ કરી. 

આ બે દીકરીઓની કોલેજ જાન્યુઆરીથી શરૃ થવાની. તે બેઉને કાકરમાં શરૃ કરેલી અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં મહિનો સેવા આપવા જવાનું અમારા ડીમ્પલબેને ગોઠવ્યું. 

કૈલાશ અને ઊર્મીલા કાકર ગયા ને બાળકો ભેગા એવા હળી મળી ગયા કે હવે બેઉની કોલેજ શરૃ થવાનો ને કાકરથી વિદાય લેવાનો વખત થયો.. 

હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા બાળકોને આ ખબર પડી એટલે આ બેઉને નહીં લઈ જાવની ભલામણ શરૃ થઈ.

કોકીલા ને ભારતી એ માટે પહેલ કરી ને પછી હોસ્ટેલની બધી ટાબરે પણ ન લઈ જાવનું રટણ...

કૈલાશ ને ઊર્મીલાને પણ આ બાળકો સાથે મજા પડી એમણે કહ્યું, દીદી દરેક વેકેશનમાં હવે અમે આ બાળકો પાસે જ આવીશું. 

અમારા ત્યાં ભણતા બાળકોને અમે સમગ્ર વિશ્વ એક કુટુંબની ભાવના શીખવીએ.. એટલે જ આ બાળકો એકબીજા પ્રત્યે આટલું હેત રાખી શકે. 

પણ આવું હેત સૌ એકબીજા પર વર્ષાવે તો દુનિયા કેવી મજાની થઈ જાય નહીં?

ફોટોમાં કોકીલા અને ભારતી જે દીદીને ન લઈ જવા કહી રહી છે તે મારી પાછળ.. ને હોસ્ટેલના એ હોલની બહાર નીકળીને  તો બધા એકદમ ઘેરી વળીને ન લઈ જવાની વાત ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય...

Mittal Patel meets Meera and Chetan

Meera and Chetan are residents of Surendranagar’s Dudhrej, a town that has large settlements nomadic and de-notified communities. Most children of these communities do not go to school, reason being the highway that passes from between the school and settlement. There is a looming fear of accidents while crossing the highway. The parents resent sending their children to school. VSSM had appealed to the concerned authorities for sanctioning a school at the settlement.  Our team member, Harshadbhai remained persistent in following up the appeal. Consequently, we had school at up till 8th grade at the settlement.

When at the settlement recently, I happen to meet Meera and Chetan.  I am very fond of Madhu, Meera’s mother. Chetan’s father Kishanbhai is an expert flute player. He too is dear to us. We never had to tell these parents to educate their children.

“Didi, we have finished studies upto 8th grade, we do not have a high school here. I want to study further, take me with you please!” Chetan tells me. Meera too joins in. I have decided to bring both of them to our hostel in June 2022.

It has been our dream to help children like Meera and Chetan realise their dream. Our very dear and respected Shri Chandrakant Gogri has given us land In Pansar near Gandhinagar to build an institute to educate 1000 such children. Very soon we shall be commencing the construction of Vallabh Vidya Vihar, an all-inclusive enclave for educational and vocational training of children from marginalised communities of Gujarat.  It will help us live our pledge of providing life skills and raise responsible citizens of tomorrow.

મીરા અને ચેતન સુરેન્દ્રનગરના દૂધરેજમાં રહે. 

દૂધરેજમાં વિચરતી જાતિઓની વસતિ ઘણી. બાળકોય ઘણા પણ નિશાળમાં જવાનું ખાસ કરે નહીં. મૂળ ગામની નિશાળ ને વસાહતની વચમાં ધ્રાંગધ્રા હાઈવે આવે. તે મા-બાપને અકસ્માતનો ભય લાગ્યા કરે. 

અમે આ પરિવારો જ્યાં રહેતા ત્યાં જ નિશાળ બનાવી આપવા સરકારમાં રજૂઆત કરી. અમારો હર્ષદ એ માટે સતત મથે. આખરે નિશાળ થઈ. ધો.8 સુધી બાળકો ત્યાં ભણે..

હમણાં વસાહતમાં જવાનું થયું તે વેળા મીરા અને ચેતન મળ્યા. મીરાની મા મધુ મને પ્રિય ને ચેતનનો બાપ કિશન અચ્છો વાંસળી કલાકાર. એય પ્રિય. બાળકોને ભણાવજો એવું અમારે આ બેયના મા-બાપને કહેવું ન પડે.

ચેતને કહ્યું, દીદી આઠ ધો. પાસ થઈ ગયો હવે અહીંયા નિશાળ નથી મને તમારી સાથે આવવું છે તો મીરાએ પણ કહ્યું, મને પણ લઈ જાવ ને...

જૂન 2022માં બેઉને અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં લઈ આવવાનું નક્કી....

ગાંધીનગર પાસેના પાનસરમાં આવા 1000 થી વધુ બાળકોને રાખીને ભણાવી શકાય તે માટે અમારા ખુબ જ આદરણીય અને પ્રિય ચંદ્રકાન્તભાઈ ગોગરીએ જમીન લઈ આપી છે. આવનારા દિવસોમાં ત્યાં વલ્લભ વિદ્યા વિહાર ઊભુ થશે જ્યાં બાળકો વિવિધ વ્યવસાયલક્ષી તાલીમ સાથે શિક્ષણ મેળવશે ને દેશના અચ્છા નાગરિક બનશે... 

જીવનલક્ષી શિક્ષણ આપવાની અમારી નેમ...

“Didi, may we come in?”

5 students from our hostel who now pursue Engineering Diploma came to see me in my office. 

All these students have been studying with VSSM’s hostels from when it functioned at Dodiya, Surendranagar and Radhanpur in Patan. And when the hostel at Ahmedabad was up and running, these boarders along with others also moved to Ahmedabad. 

The community these students belonged, marries off their children early, the responsibility to earn living falls on their shoulders early hence, it is pertinent for the children to begin earning early in life. This was the reason VSSM’s Dimpleben decided to enrol them in Diploma in Engineering program at Ganapat University. Sachin and Mahesh pursued Diploma in Automobile Engineering, Rohit and Raveen did Diploma in Electrical Engineering while Jeevan enrolled in ITI Mechanical program. All of them are in the second year of their program. Initially, it was challenging to comprehend the studies in English, but our Education team members Vanita, Bijol led by Dimpleben, provided the support and encouragement they required to carry on. Eventually, their continued efforts paid off as the students settled well with the curriculum. 

“We have come to seek your blessings as we appear for standard 12th exam as external students.” All five spoke together. 

“Our blessings are always with you, will you be taking up a job on finishing the Diploma or?”

“We wish to enrol for the degree program.” quick came their collective response. 

“Will your families allow? And marriage…?”

“Didi, I am married!” one of them spoke before I could finish my sentence. “But we have told my family not to bring the wife home until I finish my studies.”

“I am engaged,” said another. “We get married when our elder sister or brother is getting married. This way our families are spared from double expenses. But do not worry, I will first finish my studies.”

“Are you all firm on your decision?”

“Absolutely.”

“After seeing us doing good, other students from our village also want to come and study here.”

“That is wonderful. But if the boys will study and the girls aren’t allowed to, the balance will get skewed. Ensure that girls of your community are also encouraged to study.”

Everyone affirmed. 

“I appreciate you want to pursue further education, but what will you do with a degree in Arts?”

“Didi, we want to study as much as we can. It is good that we study, right?”

And I am glad the children from such marginalised communities are not hungry for receiving education. After talking to me, all of them requested a picture together. 

We are grateful to all of you for enabling us to support the education of these children. Your assistance has certainly provided them with a better tomorrow.

'દીદી આવીએ...' અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ધો.10 ભણીને હવે ડીપ્લોમાં એન્જીન્યરીંગ ભણી રહેલા પાંચ વિદ્યાર્થીઓ મારી ઓફીસમાં આવ્યા..

આમ તો આ પાંચેય ટાબર હતા ત્યારથી અમારી હોસ્ટેલ જે પહેલાં સુરેન્દ્રનગરના ડોળિયામાં અને પાટણના #રાધનપુરમાં ચાલતી એમાં ભણતા. એ પછી અમદાવાદમાં સદવિચાર પરિવારના કેમ્પસમાં હોસ્ટેલ તબદીલ કરી ને આ બાળકોની સાથે અન્ય બાળકો પણ અમદાવાદ આવ્યા.

આ પાંચેય જે સમાજમાંથી આવે એમાં લગ્ન વહેલાં થઈ જાય ને પરિવારની જવાબદારી પણ વહેલાં આવે. આવામાં બાળકો ઝડપથી પગભર થાય તે જરૃરી. 

એટલે જ ધો.10 પાસ કર્યા પછી પાંચેયને #ગણપત_યુનિવર્સીટીમાં ચાલતા ડિપ્લોમાં કોર્સ જેમાં સચીન અને મહેશને ઓટોમોબાઈલ, રોહીત અને રવીને ઈલેક્ટ્રીકલમાં તો જીવણને આ.ટી.આઈ.મીકેનીકલમાં પ્રવેશ અપાવ્યો. 

એક વર્ષ આ પાંચેયે પૂર્ણ કર્યું હવે બીજા વર્ષમાં આવ્યા. પહેલાં અંગ્રેજીમાં ભણવાનું થોડું કપરુ લાગતું. પણ અમારી ટીમના ડિમ્પલબેન, વનીતા, બીજોલ સતત તેમને જુસ્સો પુરો પાડે. એમના સતત પ્રયત્નોથી જ આ બાળકો ત્યાં ટક્યા ને હવે તો ફાવી ગયું. 

'ધો.12ની પરિક્ષા એક્સટર્નલ તરીકે આપવા આવ્યા છીએ દીદી.. આશિર્વાદ આપો' એવું પાંચેય કહ્યું.. 'આશિર્વાદ તો હંમેશાં.. પણ ડિપ્લોમા પૂર્ણ કર્યા પછી નોકરીએ લાગી જશો કે?'

'અમારી ઈચ્છા ડિગ્રી કરવાની છે..' 'ઘરવાળા કરવા દેશે.. લગ્ન...'

હજુ વાક્ય પૂર્ણ થાય એ પહેલાં જ પાંચેમાંથી એકે કહ્યું, 'મારા થઈ ગયા દીદી.. પણ મે ઘરવાળાને કહી દીધું કે, ભણવાનું ન પતે ત્યાં સુધી એને તેડી લાવવાની નહીં.. '

તો બીજાએ કહ્યું, 'મારી સગાઈ થઈ ગઈ દીદી.. અમારામાં મોટાભાઈ કે બહેનનું કરે ભેગા ભેગું નાનાનુંયે ગોઠવી દે... પણ ચિંતા ન કરો ભણવાનું નહીં બગાડીએ...'

'મક્કમ છો?''એકદમ દીદી...'

'અમને જોઈને હવે આપણી હોસ્ટેલમાં અમારા ગામથી બીજા છોકરાં પણ ભણવા આવવાના છે... '

'બહુ સરસ.. પણ બધા છોકરાં ભણી જશે ને દીકરીઓ નહીં ભણે તો બેલેન્સ બગડી જશે માટે દીકરીઓને પણ ભણવા આવવા પ્રોત્સાહીત કરજો... 'બધાએ એક સૂરે હા કહી...

'ડીગ્રી કરવી છે તો ધો.12 આર્ટસની ડીગ્રી લઈને શું કરશો?' 

'દીદી જેટલું ભણાય એટલું ભણવાનું.. ભણીએ એ તો સારુ કહેવાય ને?'

ચાલો ભણતરની હોંશ થઈ એનો રાજીપો... એ પછી પાંચેય પરિક્ષા આપવા ગયા.. એ પહેલાં દીદી એક ફોટો.. જે પાડ્યો ને અહીંયા વહેંચ્યો... 

આ બાળકોના ભણતરમાં શરૃઆતથી આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન અમારા ચંદ્રકાન્તભાઈ ગોગરી મદદ કરે.. સાથે અન્ય પ્રિયજનો પણ ખરા આપ સૌ પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર.. એમની મદદથી બાળકો ઉજ્જવળ ભવિષ્યને પામશે.

"Didi, I have passed with 87% marks!" Sapna shared as she entered my office. Small-boned Sapna has big dreams and she has been an inspiring change within her community.

Sapna hails from Amirgadh, her mother is a domestic helper. Sapna aspired to be an IT Engineer, but it was beyond the means of her menial wage-earning mother to fulfil Sapna’s dreams. Fate brought her to our hostel, from where she went on the join Ganapat University's IT Engineering Diploma Program. The initial months were challenging as she could not comprehend English and blending with peers conversing in English was difficult. However, the continuous support and mentoring by Dimpleben and VSSM’s education team members Vanita, Bijol, Vijay, Kokila helped boost Sapna’s confidence to blend into the new learning space. 

A little while ago, Sapna brought her aunt’s daughters to meet us. “Didi, they also want to study,” she shared. Sapna’s words were music to my ears and the fact that she inspired this change in mindset made our efforts worthwhile. Sapna also wants to continue studying for a degree once she has finished her Diploma studies. We are thrilled at the fact that Sapna has bigger dreams.

The efforts Dimpleben, Vanita, Bijol, Vijay, Jay, Kokila and others pour into these children helps them embark upon a brighter future. And we are grateful to all of you for fuelling these massive efforts to help us educate first-generation learners.

સપનાં ઝીણકી એવી.. ઓફીસ પર આવી અને કહ્યું દીદી મારે 87% આવ્યા.

સપના અમીરગઢની. એની મમ્મી ઘરકામ કરે. 

સપનાની ઈચ્છા IT એન્જીનીયર બનવાની. પણ ઘરકામ કરતી મા માટે સપનાનું આ સ્વપ્ન પૂર્ણ કરવું મુશ્કેલ?

અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં એ ભણે. 10 પાસ કર્યું ને ગણપત યુનીવર્સીટીમાં અમે એને આઈટી એન્જીનીયરીંગ ભણવા મુકી.

શરૃઆતમાં તો અગ્રેજી ન ફાવે. અન્ય બાળકો સાથે તાલમેલ કરવો પણ અઘરો પડે. પણ અમારા ડિમ્પલબેન અને VSSMની શિક્ષણનું કાર્ય જોતી અમારી ટીમ વનિતા, બીજોલ, વિજય, કોકીલા વગેરે એને સતત સમજાવતા રહ્યા છેવટે સપનાં ગોઠવાઈ ગઈ.

થોડા સમય પહેલાં સપનાં એના માસી અને એમની દિકરીઓને લઈને હોસ્ટેલ પર આવી. દીદી આ લોકોને પણ ભણવું છે... સાંભળી રાજી થવાયું. એ ભણી એને જોઈને બીજાને પ્રેરણા મળી..

એને ડીપ્લોમા પત્યા પછી ડીગ્રી કરવું છે.. સપનાં સ્વપ્ન જોતી થઈ એનો રાજીપો...

ડીમ્પલબેન, વનિતા, બીજોલ, વિજય, જય, કોકીલા વગેરે સૌ કાર્યકરોની મહેનતથી આવા ઘણા બાળકો ઉજ્જવળ ભવિષ્ય તરફ પગરણ માંડશે...

આપ સૌ પ્રત્યે રાજીપો..

How splendid they look in their white coats, their uniforms for a nursing course. Most of these children have been with us from a very young age. Rajal, Priyanka, Punam, Drashti, Neha, Rakesh, Parul, Roshni… We remember the times when they cried their heart out as they waved goodbye to their parents on arriving at the hostel after schools re-opened. “We do not wish to study take us back home, take us along with you…” they would chase their parents as they left the hostel premises.

And we would keep lecturing them on the importance and need to study, what would happen if they did not go to school while tears rolled down their eyes… All this crying and cajoling would continue for an hour following which they would make themselves comfortable in the hostel. And while chatting casually if we asked why the need for so much drama “Don’t know why it’s just that we missed home.” And when at home for holidays they keep calling us to inquire when the hostels would re-open? Why? Because they missed hostel…

Such sweet girls of ours, time flies, look how much they have grown.

 “We have your pictures, you as kids!!”

“Didi, please don’t show them to anyone!” they tell me while watching their younger selves on a computer screen.

Seventeen of these girls had been enrolled to Certified Course for Para-medical run by Shalby Academy and National Council of Paramedical, Delhi.

The girls have grown up, there are monetary expectations from home, there is also some pressure to marry them off. This course will help them find jobs quickly. Our dream is to make them financially independent. Along with the course, they do continue with their education. 

The fees to this course is Rs. 36,000 of which Shalby Hospital paid Rs. 16,000 and Rs. 20,000 was borne by VSSM with contribution from our dear Jayeshbhai and Darshil Rambhiya through their Apex Foundation and respected Jayprakashbhai Shah’s Valchand Engineering Alumni Group. We are immensely grateful for the support they have provided.

VSSM’s Dimpleben’s role to mentor the children to aspire for a goal and drive them to achieve it, she has relieved me from a lot of worries with regards to these children. It is she who efficiently handles (breaks her head) both,  the kids and their parents try to convince and explain to them why VSSM does what it does for the kids. With her Vanita, Bijol, Kokila, Vijay, Jay, Pravin…  the perseverant and hardworking team members VSSM is  proud to have.

Children, may almighty bless you with success and happiness, work hard and raise the name of your parents and work for the betterment of the poor and needy.

અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતી ટાબર... 

સફેદ નર્સીંગના ડ્રેસમાં બધા કેવા મજાના લાગે.. આમાંના મોટાભાગના તો સાવ નાના નાના હતા ત્યારથી અમારી સાથે.. રાજલ, પ્રિયંકા, પૂનમ, દૃષ્ટ્રી, નેહા, રાકેશ, પારુલ, રોશની.. આમ તો મોટાભાગનાને નિશાળ ખુલે એ વખતે મા- બાપ મુકવા આવે ને મુકીને પાછા ફરવાનું કરે ત્યારે સાથે જવા આ બધા કેવા ઘમપછાડા કરતા. અમારે નથી ભણવું. મને લઈ જાવ.. ને ક્યારેક તો મા- બાપની પાછળ દોટ પણ મુકે...

આંખોમાંથી ગંગા જમના વહેતી હોય ત્યારે અમે ભણવું પડે, ના ભણીએ તો શું થાયના ભાષણ આપતા... જો કે આ બધુ સ્મશાન વૈરાગ્યુ જેટલું જ ચાલે કલાકમાં તો પાછા હોસ્ટેલમાં એકદમ સેટ.. પછી પુછીએ કે આવું કેમ કર્યું તો કહે, ખબર નહીં, ઘર બહુ યાદ આવતું હતું. પાછા આ બધા વેકેશનમાં ઘરે જાય પછી ફોન કરીને દીદી હોસ્ટેલ ક્યારે ખુલશે એ પુછી પુછીને માથુ દુઃખવાડી દે..

આવા મીઠડા ટબુડા... ફોટોમાં જુઓ કેવડા મોટા થઈ ગયા. અમે કહીએ તમારા નાનપણના બધા ફોટો અમારી પાસે છે ક્યારેય હું કામ કરતી હોવું ને ઓફીસમાં આવી જાય ને બતાવું તો શરમાઈ જાય..ને કોઈને બતાવતા નહીં હો દીદી એવું કહે...

આવી આ ટાબરમાંથી 17ને શેલ્બી એકેડમી સંચાલીત અને National Council of Paramedical, Delhiના જોડાણથી ડીપ્લોમા પેરા મેડીકલ સર્ટીફાઈડ કોર્સમાં અમે દાખલ કર્યા. 

હવે મોટા થયા ઘરના પણ એમની પાસેથી કમાઈને કાંઈ આપે એવી અપેક્ષા રાખે. દીકરીઓને લગ્ન માટે હા પાડવા ઘરમાંથી થોડું દબાણ પણ થઈ રહ્યું છે. ત્યારે આ કોર્સ થકી ઝડપથી બધા નોકરીએ વળગી શકશે. મૂળ આ બધા પગભર થાય એ અમારુ સ્વપ્ન જે સાકાર થવાનું. વળી નર્સીગની સાથે આગળ ભણવાનું તો પાછુ ચાલુ જ છે..

બાળકોને આ મંજીલ સુધી પહોંચાડવામાં અમારા ડીમ્પબેનની ભૂમિકા મુખ્ય. એ સાથે છે એટલે મારી કેટલીયે ચિંતા હળવી થઈ ગઈ છે. ડિમ્પલબેન બધા જ બાળકો અને વાલીઓ સાથે કેટલી માથાકૂટ કરે. મૂળ સમજાવવું એ સૌથી મોટુ ટાસ્ક..પણ એ બધુ બખુબીથી કરે ને એમને વનિતા, બિજોલ, કોકિલા, વિજય, જય, હર્ષદ, જલ્પા, પ્રવિણનો  સાથ મળે. એ ન મળે તો આ બધુયે પાછુ અઘરુ....આવી મજબૂત ટીમ VSSM પાસે હોવાનું ગૌરવ..

બચ્ચાઓ ખુબ પ્રગતિ કરજો ને તમારુ ને માબાપનું નામ રોશન કરજો.. ને ભણી ગણીને બીજા દિન દુઃખીયાની સેવા કરજોના આશિર્વાદ

Ganga lives in Surendranagar’s Doodhrej.

The school is a little away from her settlement. The parents remain at work throughout the day. There was no one to bring her to and from the school. But they wanted their daughter to study. However, from the 7th standard Ganga started getting teased and harassed while commuting to school and back. The fear of these anti-social elements resulted in her refusing to go to school. Like all parents,  Ganga’s parents also wanted her to have a better future hence,  they wanted her to continue with her schooling. They shared their dilemma with VSSM’s  Harshadbhai. This is how Ganga reached our hostel in Ahmedabad.

The guidance and mentoring of VSSM’s education team consisting of Dimpleben, Vanita, Kokila ironed away all the academic deficiencies Ganga had when she first arrived at the hostel. Initially, for the fear of being harassed, she hesitated going back to her village.  The once shy and fearful girl is now a confident 10th grader.

“I wish to have a job and build a house of my own when I grow up,” she shares.

The safety a house provides might have made her aspire for one, we wish and pray her aspirations to turn into reality.

“Once the schools reopen, along with Ganga,  I want to send my other two daughters to study at VSSM.” Ganga’s mother had mentioned when I was in Surendranagar recently and decided to visit her.

Such good intents are always welcome…

ગંગા... સુરેન્દ્રનગરના દૂધરેજમાં રહે. 

સાતમાં ધોરણમાં ભણતી એ વેળા એની છેડતીના પ્રશ્નો થવા માંડ્યા. મૂળ એના છાપરાંથી નિશાળ દૂર. મા -બાપ બેય મજૂરી કરે. નિશાળે લેવા મૂકવા જવાનું એ કરી ન શકે. પણ બેઉની લાગણી પોતાની દીકરી ભણે એવી. 

આવામાં ગંગા અસમાજિક તત્વોના ડરથી નિશાળ જવાની ના કહેવા માંડી. પોતે ભણ્યા નથી એટલે આજે દુઃખોનો પાર નથી. દીકરી નહીં ભણે તો એની દશાય પોતાના જેવી..એમણે આ મૂંઝવણ અમારા કાર્યકર હર્ષદને કહી ને ગંગા આવી અમદાવાદ અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં. 

ભણવામાં નબળી પણ અમારા ડિમ્પલબેન, વનીતા, કોકીલા વગેરેની મહેનતથી ધીમે ધીમે એ બધુ શીખવા માંડી. હાલ દસમુ ધોરણ ભણે. શરૃઆતમાં વેકેશનમાં કોઈ હેરાન કરશે તો એવો ડર એને સતાવતો. પણ હવે એ આત્મવિશ્વાસથી ભરપૂર છે. 

'મોટા થઈ ને નોકરી કરીશ અને પોતાનું પાક્કુ ઘર બનાવીશ' એવું ગંગા કહે. 

ઘર બનાવવાની વાત કદાચ સુરક્ષીત વાતાવરણના પરીપેક્ષમાં એ કરતી હશે.. પણ એની આ ભાવના કુદરત પૂર્ણ કરાવે.

થોડા સમય પહેલાં સુરેન્દ્રનગર જવાનું થયું ત્યારે ગંગાને ખાસ મળવા ગઈ.. એની મા કહે છે, 'આ નિશાળો ખુલે એટલે ગંગા ભેગી મારી બીજી બે દિકરીઓને પણ તમારી પાહે ભણવા મુકી દેવી છે.. 

'આ તો મંગલ વાત વધાવવાની જ હોય ને...

“How many of you drink alcohol?”

Had this question been raised at a gathering of addicts, most of them would either deny or choose to remain silent. But the group I had posed the question to are the children from our brand new hostel at Kankar. I had assumed that they might either not reply or deny but to my utter surprise, around 25 of them raised their hands.

I asked them to separate from the group and be seated at one side of the room.

“How many of you smoke bidi?” was my next question.

The question made them break into a burst of mellow laughter. Some 15 more stood up and asked them to sit before me.

My plan that day was to talk to these kids ranging between the ages of 7 to 14 years, to give up their addictions.

Recently, we opened the doors of Kakar hostel. The hostel will house children of Fulvadi community when their parents are away for a large part of the year for work. The hostels we operate are not strict correction homes,  rather they become second homes to the children we house. The children at Kankar hostel share their time between their home and hostel, which are in the same settlement. We never forbid them to go home or do what they wish. The idea is to be their mentor, not master.  The ease of non-restrictive movement between hostel and home these kids enjoyed brought to our attention the addictions these children carry. They would sneak out to puff the bidi they have buried underground in plastic bags.

The pocket money their parents give is used to buy these addictions.

My conversation with these children began with praising and applauding all those who admitted to addictions. All of us gave an ovation to the children for their righteousness. A moral story was shared, there were some jovial interactions through the hour we talked about the need to give up the habits that harm their well-being.

“Now tell me, will you be able to give up daru-bidi?” I asked.

“Yes didi!” all except three replied in unison.

“We find it hard, we won’t lie to you but it will not be possible for us to give up our addictions,” was a very honest response from the remaining three.

How could we not honour such honesty? We applauded the three for their truthfulness.

The ones who had shown willingness to give up their addictions pledged to Fulbai Ma and Lord Shankar.

“What if you continue even after taking this pledge?” I asked.

“Fulbai Ma will come after me!” was Vinu’s innocent response.

All of them took an oath before Saraswati Ma.

“Didi I want to take a pledge, but I feel afraid, what if I cannot remain committed?” Hari, one of the three boys,  came forward.

“Believe in yourself and almighty. You will be able to give up!” I assured.

Apprehensive Hari; took a pledge, so did the other two.

If these children need to be corrected,  it is through abundant love and support and not battering. I am sure they will come around.

I am sure these kids when they grow up to become officers, businessmen, farmers, cattle breeders and reminisce their childhood anecdotes will have this to say…  “As a kid, I  was addicted to smoking and drinking but gave it all up when I was educated about the harm it does. Look where I am today.!” They will have such inspiring stories to share.

Currently, 63 children are enrolled at Kakar hostel from June the number will swell up to  160 boys and girls.

We are grateful to all who have supported our dream of building this hostel.

'તમારામાંથી દારૃ કોણ પીવે છે?'

સામાન્ય રીતે વ્યસન કરનાર વ્યક્તિને આ પુછીએ તો એ પોતે વ્યસન નથી કરતો એમ જ કહેશે.. પણ જેમને હું પુછી રહી હતી તે તો અમારી ટાબર(બાળકો). જવાબ નહીં આપે કે ખોટુ કહેશે એમ સામાન્ય રીતે લાગે પણ આશ્ચર્ય વચ્ચે પચીસેક જણે હાથ ઉપર કર્યા. 

મે એમને ઊભા થઈને મારી બાજુની ખાલી જગ્યામાં એમને બેસવા કહ્યું. 

એ પછી મારો બીજો પ્રશ્ન, 

'બીડી કેટલા પીવે છે?' મારો પ્રશ્ન સાંભળી બધા બચ્ચા નીચું મોઢુ કરી ખીખી કરી હસવા લાગ્યા ને ધીરે રહીને બીજા પંદરેક જણા ઊભા થયા.

મે એમને પણ ઊભા થઈને મારી સામે બેસવા કહ્યું..

7 થી લઈને 14 વર્ષના આ બાળકોને મારે વ્યસન ન કરવા સમજાવવાનું હતું. 

અમે કાકરમાં હોસ્ટેલ શરૃ કરી. પણ બાળકો ઉપર અમે કડક જાપતો ન રાખીએ.. ઘર એમનું હોસ્ટેલની સામે.  મન થાય તો એ ઘરે પણ જાય અમે એમને ન રોકીએ. મૂળ દબાણ કરીએ ને ભણવા પરથી એનું મન ઊઠી જાય એવું અમારે નહોતું કરવું માટે આ છૂટછાટ આપેલી..

પણ આ છુટછાટમાં એ વ્યસન કરતા હોવાનું ધ્યાને આવ્યું. દર એકાદ બે કલાકે ટચલી આંગળી બતાવીને યુરીનલ માટે, ઘર યાદ આવે છે વગેરે જેવા બહાના કરે ને હોસ્ટેલના પ્રાંગણની બહાર જઈને જમીનમાં સંતાડી રાખેલી પ્લાસ્ટીકની કોથળી બહાર કાઢી એમાંથી બીડી ને અન્ય ચીજોના ચુસકા લગાવે..

મા- બાપ થોડા પૈસા વાપરવા આપીને ગયેલા એમાંથી બીડી ને બીજુ બધુયે આમ તો બીડી માટે તો ઠૂંઠાય ચાલે..

વ્યસન કરે છેની કબુલાત કરનાર સૌને પહેલાં તો તેમની સચ્ચાઈ માટે ત્રણ તાલીનું માન આપ્યું..પછી એમને સમજાય તેવી નાનકડી વાર્તોઓમાંથી તેમને બોધપાઠ મળે તે માટે કોશીશ કરી. થોડા પ્રશ્નો, થોડી રમૂજ, નાનકડી વાતોનો દોર લગભગ કલાક ચાલ્યો.. 

પછી પુછ્યું, 

'બોલો છૂટશે વ્યસન?' 

ને ત્રણ સિવાય બાકી બધાએ એક સૂરે કહ્યું, 'હા દીદી...'

ત્રણે કહ્યું, 'અમને અઘરુ લાગે છે.. જુઠ નહીં બોલીયે પણ નહીં છુટે..'

આ ત્રણે માટે તો વિશેષ પ્રેમ વ્યક્ત કર્યો સૌએ ફરી ત્રણ તાલીનું માન આપ્યું. 

જેમણે છુટી જશેનું કહ્યું એ સૌએ મા ફુલબઈ અને ભોળા શંકરની શાખે પવિત્ર જળના સપથ લીધા. 

મે કહ્યું, 'જળ લીધા પછી વ્યસન કર્યું તો?'

તો વીનુએ કહ્યું, 'મા ફુલબઈ મન ઝાલ...'

કેવી નિખાલશ કબુલાતો... બધાએ સરસસ્તી માના ફોટો સામે પ્રતિક રૃપે જળ મુક્યું... જે ત્રણે ના પાડી હતી તેમાંથી હરી પ્રથમ આવ્યો, 

'દીદી નહીં થાય તો? મારે જળ મુકવું છે પણ બીક આવે છે!'

મે કહ્યું, 'તારામાં ને પછી ઈશ્વરમાં શ્રદ્ધા રાખ થઈ જશે..'

ને હરીએ ડરતાં ડરતાં પાણી મુક્યુ ને પછી તો બાકીના બેયે પણ...

પવિત્ર બાળકો મારઝૂડ કરવાથી એને વારી ન શકાય પણ મબલખ - લખલૂટ પ્રેમ આપીયે તો એ વળી જાય.. 

આ ટાબરમાંથી કાલ કોઈ મોટો અધિકારી, ધંધાદારી, પશુપાલક, ખેડૂત બનશે ને પોતાની કહાણી આપણા સૌ સામે કહેશે. 

જ્યારે હું નાનો હતો ત્યારે બીડી - દારૃ પીતો પણ સમજણ પડી ને મુક્યું.. તો જુઓ આજે હું ક્યાં છુ.... આવી કાંઈ કેટલીયે પ્રેરણાદાયી વાતોનો ખજાનો એમની પાસે હશે... 

કાકરની અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં હાલ 63 બાળકો ભણે છે. જુનથી 160 દીકરા દીકરીઓ આ હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણશે.. હોસ્ટેલ બાંધકામમાં મદદ કરનાર સૌ સ્નેહીજનોનો આભાર...
