 "You wake up our girls at 4 in the morning; you don't even allow them a goodnight's sleep. So we do not wish to send them to the hostel anymore."

"You are right, but we wake them early to study, to give them a brighter future. Isn't that ok?"

"Whatever, but this doesn't seem right."

"The parents of girls studying para-medical nursing courses while completing their 12th grade came to us with this complaint."

They have all the reasons to be upset because the regime these girls follow is very tight. The extra coaching they need to cope with their studies requires them to wake up at 4 am. They study till 6.30 am, after which they finish the morning rituals and prepare to leave for Shalby Hospital at 8 am, where they attend the theory and practical classes for their para medical nursing course from 9 am to 6 pm. Once they return to the hostel at 7 pm, they have dinner- freshen up and study until 10 p. The Sundays too are spent studying for the course. 

The recently announced results of 12th-grade were a reflection of the rigorous efforts. 23 of the 25 students who appeared have cleared the exams with good grades. 2 of them have failed but will be taking a retest. 

As usual, the parents felt the pressure of the children's intensive schedule, but the girls were more than happy with their studies. Two girls aspire to join BSc nursing, and 10 want to enrol for General Nursing (GNM). Both of these are three years programs. These courses can promote them to the position of the head nurse. Some girls also wish to join BSc IT.

The seven students who have already completed their Nursing Diploma have found jobs at various hospitals with a starting salary of Rs. 14,400. 

The role of Vandanaben Nayak, who took a daily coaching class at 4 in the morning, is significant to these students' success. The incredibly selfless and devoted, Vandanaben has been tutoring our children for the last seven years. Likewise, our Bal Dost Jay also ensures that the children put in the effort required to complete this course successfully. And the result of both these hard-working individuals is seen in the results of our children.

Dimpleben Parikh, our senior team member who steers the education initiative, has played a vital role in ensuring the children at our hostels receive uninterrupted education and enrol in aptitude and market-appropriate vocational courses. And her efforts are matched by our education team members Vanita, Bijol, Pravin, Kokila and Vijay.

Educating the children from various nomadic communities has not been an easy ride for us; these sunny moments usher memories of the days when parents refused to send the children to the hostel, our attempts to deal with parents who did not prioritize the education of their children, who did not dream of their better future and how we had to counsel, threaten use force to bring the children to the hostels. Thankfully, now these are all matters of the past.

The children of these communities are also not inclined towards learning; they are not habituated to remaining stationed at one place and putting in focused efforts. But the continuous mentoring and nurturing (at times it may seem harsh) has enabled these children to reach an unheard-of and unimagined stage until 5-6 years ago. Therefore, I am sure these children will herald a better future for their community's other children.

We are grateful to the sponsors and donors who have helped us bring education to the threshold of these extremely impoverished families/children; because of you, we do not need to worry about the finances and concentrate our efforts on educating these children.

An 18-year-old, living in a hut and earning Rs. 14,400 indeed is a huge milestone for all of us. We wish all these children a better and brighter future.

તમે અમારી દીકરીઓને સવારે ચાર વાગે ઊઠાડી દો છો.. સરખી રીતે સુવા પણ દેતા નથી.. 

અમારે હવે એમને હોસ્ટેમાં ભણવા નથી મોકલવી.  

વાત સાચી પણ  એને  4વાગે કામ કરવા ઊઠાડીએ છીએ.. 

એ ભણે એનું ભવિષ્ય ઊજ્જળ બને તે માટે ઉઠાડીએ છીએ ને?એ જે હોય તે પણ આવું તે કાંઈ હોય?આવી નારાજગી અમારા ત્યાં પેરા મેડીકલ નર્સીગનો કોર્સ કરવાની સાથે ધો. 12  ભણતા દીકરા દીકરીઓના વાલીઓની. 

એક રીતે  તેમની નારાજગી પણ વ્યાજબી.  સવારે 4 વાગે તેમના ટયુશન ચાલુ થઈ જાય. એ માટે એમને થોડું વહેલાં ઉઠવાનું. સાડા છ સુધી ભણવાનું  ચાલે.પછી  નાહવા ધોવાનું  અને દૂધ નાસ્તો. એ પતે કે 8  વાગે નર્સીગના કોર્સ માટે હોસ્ટેલ છોડી શેલ્બી હોસ્પીટલ આવવાનું.  9 વાગ્યાથી એ  ભણવાનું ચાલુ થાય.ત્યાં થીયરીની સાથે પ્રેકટીકલ પણ ચાલે અને સાંજના 6 વાગે એ છૂટે. એ પછી હોસ્ટેલ પર પહોંચી જમીને પાછા ટ્યુશન  પર લાગે તે રાતના 10 વાગ્યા સુધી.. રવિવારે રજાના દિવસે સતત વાંચવાનું..

આ  સખત મહેનત સાથે 25 બાળકોએ ધો.12ની પરીક્ષા આપી. તેમાંથી  23 બાળકો પાસ થયા એ પણ સારા માર્કસ સાથે. જ્યારે બે બાળકો એક વિષયમાં ફેઈલ થયા. એ પણ ફરી પરીક્ષા  આપી પાસ થઈ જશે.

જોકે વાલીઓને આ પ્રેશર  લાગતું પણ બાળકો તો હોંશે હોંશે ભણતા.એ ભણવાના ભાગ  રૃપે હવે ધો. 12 પાસ થયેલામાંથી બે બાળકો Bsc નર્સીગમાં તેમજ 10 બાળકો જનરલ નર્સીગ (GNM)નો ત્રણ વર્ષનો  કોર્સ  કરવાની ખેવના રાખી... આ કોર્સ પછી  હેડ નર્સ બનીશકે. આ સિવાય Bsc IT માં કેટલાક બાળકો જશે.  આ સિવાય ડિપ્લોમા નર્સીગનો કોર્સ કરી રહેલા 7 બાળકોને જુદી જુદી હોસ્પીટલમાં નોકરી પણ મળી ગઈ એ પણ શરૃઆતી પગાર 14,400 થી. 

આ બાળકો આ પરિણામ સુધીૂ પહોંચ્યા એમાં  સૌથી મોટો ફાળો એમને  સવારે 4 વાગે ટ્યુશન કરાવતા વંદનાબેન નાયકનો. નિસ્વાર્થ પણે છેલ્લા સાત વર્ષથી એ અમારા  આ બાળકોને ભણાવવાનું  એ કરે.  જય  અમારો  બાલદોસ્ત  જે રાતના મોડે સુધી બાળકોને ભણાવવાનું કરે. આ બેઉની સખત મહેનતના પરિણામે બાળકો આ સ્તરે પહોંચ્યા. 

જો કે આ સ્તરે પહોંચાડવા અમારા ડીમ્પલબેન પરીખનો ફાળો મોટો. એ વંદના બહેન, જય સાથે સતત ફોલોઅપમાં. બાળકો ધો. 12 પાસ કરીને આગળ શું ભણશે તે માટે સતત તેમની સાથે વાત કરવાનું એ કરે.. અમારી વનીતા, બીજોલ, પ્રવીણ, કોકીલા અને વીજયનો ફાળો પણ વિશેષ. 

વિચરતી જાતિના બાળકોને જ્યારે પહેલીવાર અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા લાવવાનો વિચાર કર્યો એ દિવસો યાદ આવે છે. વાલીઓ બાળકો માટે સ્વપ્ન ન જુએ ભણીને વળી એ શું કરવાનો. બેન નાહક માથાકૂટ કરો રહેવા દો ને.. એના કરતા એ ચાદરો વેચશે,  છરી ચપ્પુની ધાર કાઢશે ટૂંકમાં અમારા પરંપરાગત ધંધા છે એ કરશે.. ત્યારે જબરજસ્તીથી બાળકોને ઉપાડી લાવતા. ક્યારેક ધમકી આપીને લઈ આવતા..

વળી ભણવામાં મોટાભાગના બાળકો સાવ નબળા આવામાં એમની ઉપર કડક પણ થવું પડ્યું હશે પણ એ કડકાઈના લીધે જ આ બાળકો અહીંયા સુધી પહોંચ્યા..જે બાળકો નોકરીએ લાગ્યા તેમને જોઈને આ સમાજના અન્ય બાળકો પણ ભણવા આવશે.. 

અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા 450 બાળકોના ભણતરમાં મદદ કરતા સૌ સ્વજનોના અમે આભારી છીએ. તમે મદદ કરી એટલે આ બાળકો નિરાંતે ભણી શક્યા. બાકી વાલી તો એક રૃપિયો પણ બાળકોના ભણતર માટે ખર્ચી શકે તેવી ક્ષમતા નહીં..અમારા આ કાર્યમાં આપ સૌની મદદ હંમેશાં આવકાર્ય.... ઝૂંપડામાં રહેનાર બાળક 14,400 18 વર્ષની ઉમેરે કમાતા થાય એ બહુ મોટી વાત.. બધા જ બાળકને ખુબ તરક્કી કરોની શુભભાવના...

The hunger to learn

I distinctly remember that afternoon at a Fulvadi settlement in Kakar. As  I  walked across, my eyes fell upon three children making rotla on a chula.

"Why are you making rotla? Aren't your parents?" I ask them.

"Our parents are out of town for work," one of them responds.

"Do they give you money before leaving?" I inquire out of curiosity.

"Yes, around Rs. 150-200."

"When did they last give you that amount?"

"Around one and half months back."

"How long can such a small amount last?"

"On Saturdays, after our school is over, we set out to beg and spend the entire Sunday begging for food. We consume the collected food throughout the week."

This interaction with seventh-grader Vinu had shaken me to the core.

The Fulvadi families need to migrate for work as the place of their permanent settlement does not provide them with enough opportunities to earn a decent livelihood. Therefore, the children usually accompany their parents. However, only some of the parents and children inclined towards continuing education make such above mentioned arrangements. Moreover, it is not just the distress migration but also the crippling rules set by the community that allow girls to study until 4th grade and boys to learn till 8th grade that hinders the kids' ability to go to school.

After thorough introspection of the entire situation, we decided to build a hostel in the settlement. In the beginning, the  VSSM team was apprehensive; they feared if the community would understand and accept the hostel facility. "It is easy to play the flute; let's make music out of pestle!" I would tell them.

Shri Pravinbhai Shah largely funded the construction of the hostel. Shri Piyushbhai Kothari of Jewelex Foundation and JETCO also joined hands. Apart from this, our other well-wishing friends and donors also contributed towards making Smt. Veerabahen Meghjibhai Shah (Chanderiya) Hostel at Kankar a reality. The hostel can host more than 170 children; fortunately, they will not be required to survive on a meal of rotla+chilli.

"We have never had milk and breakfast in the morning, but we get all of these in the hostel," the children tell us.

On the occasion of the house warming ceremony of the homes built for nomadic communities, our Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel performed the opening ceremony of this hostel.

"I want to study, but my parents won't allow me to study beyond 4th grade. Can you please tell them to allow me to go to school," Bharti tells Shri Bhupendrabhai when he is interacting with the children. On hearing this, Shri Patel gave clear instructions to the officials to make sure that their parents let the children here go to school.

The Chief Minister also gave a patient hearing to Suresh, Shailesh, Kokila and other children present at the occasion.

We are grateful to respected Shri Pradipbhai Parmar, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, who, after finishing a program at Dhansura drove for 4.5 hours to attend the event at Kankar. The event was also attended by other ministers,  District Collector Shri Anandbhai Patel and other dignitaries.

The presence of such dignitaries has enthused children towards going to school, hope the parents also show such spirit.

ભણતરની ભૂખ...

કાકરની ફુલવાદી વસાહતમાં બપોરના હું ફરી રહી હતી. એક છાપરાં પાસે મે ત્રણ બાળકોને ચુલા પર રોટલા ઘડતા જોયા. મે એમને પુછ્યું,

તમે કેમ રોટલા બનાવો? તમારા મા - બાપ?

મા- બાપ તો ધંધા અર્થે બહાર ગામ ગયા...

તે એ તમને પૈસા આપીને જાય?

હા દોઢસો - બસો આપીને જાય...

ક્યારે આપીને ગયેલા?

દોઢ મહિનો થયો..તે દોઢ મહિનો દોઢસો બસો રૃપિયાથી તો ન ચાલે..?

અમે શનિવારે સવારની નિશાળ હોય તે નિશાળ છુટે પછી અને રવીવાર આખો ભીખ માંગવા જઈએ.. એ દોઢ દિવસમાં જે ભેગુ થાય એનાથી અઠવાડિયું ચલાવીએ...

વિનુ સાતમાં ધોરણમાં ભણે એણે આ વિગત કહી.. 

સાંભળીને રૃવા઼ડાં ઊભા થઈ ગયા..

ફુલવાદી પરિવારોનો જ્યાં વસવાટ છે ત્યાં કાયમ કામ મળતું નથી માટે મોટેરા સ્થળાંતર કરે. મોટાભાગે બાળકો પણ મા -બાપ સાથે વિચરણ કરે. જે થોડા ઘણાને ભણવાનું મન હોય તે રોકાય ને પોતાની વ્યવસ્થા આ રીતે કરે. 

વળી નાતપંચના નિયમો પણ વિચિત્ર. દીકરીઓ 4 ધોરણથી આગળ ન ભણે ને છોકરાંઓ આઠ ધોરણથી આગળ ન ભણે...સમગ્ર સ્થિતિ સમજી અમે એમની વસાહતમાં છાત્રાલય બનાવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. કાર્યકરોને ડર આ લોકો આપણી વાત સમજશે કે નહીં તેને લઈને લાગ્યો. પણ હું કહું,  વાંસળી તો સહુ વગાડે સાંબેલું વગાડે તે સાચો. બસ કાકર ફુલવાદી વસાહતમાં અમારે સાંબેલું વગાડવાનું...

છાત્રાલય નિર્માણમાં મુખ્ય મદદ કરી. શ્રી પ્રવિણભાઈ શાહે. એમની સાથે જોડાયા જેવેલેક્ષ ફાઉન્ડેશનના શ્રી પિયુષભાઈ કોઠારી અને જેટકો... એ સિવાય પણ નાની મોટી મદદ સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજનોએ કરી અને એમની મદદથી કાકરમાં શ્રીમતી વિરાબહેન મેઘજીભાઈ શાહ(ચંદેરિયા) છાત્રાલયનું નિર્માણ થયું.

આ છાત્રાલયમાં 170 થી વધુ બાળકો રહીને ભણી શકશે. હવે કોઈને મરચુ રોટલો ખાવાનો વારો નહીં આવે. આમ તો બાળકો કહે, અમે સવારે દૂધ અને નાસ્તો કોઈ દિવસ કર્યો નહોતો. છાત્રાલયમાં એમને આ બધુ મળે. આ છાત્રાલયનું ઉદ્ધાટન માનનીય મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી ભુપેન્દ્રભાઈ પટેલે કાકરમાં બંધાયેલા 90 પરિવારોના ઘરોના ઉદધાટન પ્રસંગે કર્યું. તેમણે બાળકો સાથે વાત કરી જેમાં અમારી ભારતીએ ઊભા થઈને ભુપેન્દ્રભાઈને મારે ભણવું છે પણ મારા મા - બાપ મને ચોથાથી આગળ ભણાવવાની ના પાડે છે તો તમે એમને ક્યો ને કે મને ભણાવે એવું કહ્યું. 

સાંભળીને મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીએ તમામ અધિકારીઓને ફુલવાદી વસાહતના વાલીઓ સાથે બાળકોના ભણતર બાબતે વાત કરવા  ખાસ સૂચના  આપી...

સુરેશે, શૈલેશ, કોકીલા સૌએ મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી સમક્ષ ખુલીને વાત  કરી ને મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીએ સરસ રીતે વાત સાંભળી..

આદરણીય પ્રદિપભાઈ પરમાર મંત્રી શ્રી સામાજિક ન્યાય અને અધિકારીતા પણ આ પ્રસંગે ધનસુરાનો કાર્યક્રમ પતાવી સાડા ચાર કલાકનો પ્રવાસ કરીને ખાસ ઉપસ્થિત રહ્યા. તેમનો આભાર. 

સાથે અન્ય મંત્રી શ્રી કલેક્ટર શ્રી આનંદભાઈ વગેરે પણ હાજર રહ્યા. બાળકોને આ મહાનુભાવોને જોઈને ભણવાનો ઉત્સાહ જાગ્યો છે. બસ વાલીઓમાં પણ ઉત્સાહ જાગે તો ઘણું..આભાર મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી, પ્રદિપભાઈ અને  અન્ય સન્માનીય ગણનો..

“Didi, I  dream of taking my father to a car showroom and buying him a car he desires. Everyone in my village made fun of my dad and me when he decided to enrol me to this hostel. We are Nat, but my father works as a mason. He does not practice our traditional occupation. Everyone would tell me that I, too, am destined to be a mason, not an official. My father aspired to study, but we belong to a community where child marriages are rampant. My parents were also married as kids; hence my father had to forego his dream of studying all the way. When I arrived here, he asked me to study hard; he was prepared to work hard to help me study as much as I wished to. I am here because of my father. I want to make my father’s life better. I want to shut those mouths.”

Deepak is a class 12 student; along with finishing his schooling, he is also attending Para Medical and Nursing course. He aspires to complete his education and do a GNM course. “I want to get a good job and place my first salary in my father’s hands,” wishes Deepak.

“Didi, I could study because of this hostel. Numerous people would have helped so that all of us could attend school. When I begin earning, I  wish to give forward 5% of my earnings for the good of others. I will give it to you.” Such sensitivity deserves salutations.

Four hundred children from various nomadic and marginalised communities stay at VSSM operated hostels and attend mainstream schools in Ahmedabad. You may consider contributing for their future. VSSM is also setting up Vallabh Vidya Vihar, an all-inclusive educational facility near Gandhinagar’s  Pansar. The academic enclave will have the capacity to house and educate 1000 students.

'દીદી મારા પપ્પાને ગાડીઓના શો રૃમમાં લઈ જવાનું ને એ જે ગાડી પર હાથ મુકે એ ગાડી લઈ આપવાનું મારુ સ્વપ્ન છે. મને જ્યારે આપણી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા મુક્યો ત્યારે ગામમાં બધા મારા પપ્પાની ને મારી મજાક કરતા. અમે નટ પણ મારા પપ્પા ગાવા વગાડવાનું ન કરે એ કડિયા કામ કરે. તે બધા કહે, કડિયાનો છોકરો મોટો થઈને તગારાં  જ ઉચકે એ સાહેબ થોડો થાય? મારા પપ્પાને પણ ભણવાનું મન હતું પણ અમારામાં નાનપણમાં લગ્ન થઈ જાય તે એમના લગ્ન પણ થઈ ગયા ને એ ભણી ન શક્યા. મને જ્યારે ભણવા મુક્યો ત્યારે એમણે મને આ કહેલું ને તુ ખુબ મહેનત કરજે, તારે જેટલું ભણવું હોય એટલું હું ભણાવીશ એવું એમણે કહેલું.... તે દીદી મારા પપ્પાના લીધે જ હું અહીંયા છું. મારે એમના માટે ઘણું કરવું છે. જે લોકો એમને ટોણા મારે એમની બોલતી બંધ કરવી છે...'

અમારો દીપક આમ ધો.12માં ભણે ને સાથે પેરા મેડીકલ નર્સીંગનો  કોર્સ પણ કરે. એની ઈચ્છા 12 પાસ કરીને GNM કરવાની. સારી નોકરી લઈને પપ્પાના હાથમાં પહેલો પગાર આપવાની દીપકની ઈચ્છા..

 એ કહી, 'દીદી આપણી હોસ્ટેલમાં રહીને હું ભણ્યો. મને ભણાવવા કેટલા લોકોએ મદદ કરી તે હું જ્યારે કમાતો થાઉ ત્યારે મારી કમાણીનો પાંચ ટકા હિસ્સો હું પરમાર્થના કામમાં વાપરીશ.. તમને આપીશ'

દિપકની આ ભાવનાને પ્રણામ કરવા ઘટે.

“You are like a mother to me!”

Vishal tells me through an audio-video clip he made and sent to me on my birthday. ‘There isn’t anyone like my mother,’ were the words of his composition. I was overwhelmed and grateful for the joy God had bestowed upon me.

Vishal is a native of a small village located on the Gujarat-Rajasthan border. The family had constantly reeled under poverty, and the responsibility of raising four children had fallen on his father after his mother passed away when Vishal was a tiny child. As a result, the father struggled to meet the demands of raising them all.

Vishal was in 5th grade when he had arrived at our hostel to study.

“Didi, in the beginning, I never liked staying at the hostel. But, food was the reason I continued staying here. To have a breakfast that included milk and two square meals was a dream come true. Back home, we could afford tea on some days; I don’t remember eating lunch; we ate only one meal, which was dinner. We are raised in deficiency and have endured hunger for as long as we can remember. I never had to worry about food at the hostel, yet I did not like it here.”

Gradually, Vishal began bonding with VSSM’s team. He understood the value of education and became focused on learning. “You, Dimpledidi, Vanitadidi, Bijolbhai, Pravinbhai, Jaybhai, Vijaybhai, everyone emphasises education and maintains that life is nothing without a good education. You all have made us leave our worries to you and focus on our studies. I wanted to fly, and you were the wind under my wings. You had also encouraged my brother to do the same..”

Currently, Vishal studies in 12th grade. He loves photography and filmmaking, but because that profession doesn’t bring steady income, Vishal wants to complete the nurse practitioner course. Nonetheless, we have counselled him that photographers and film-makers earn good money these days, so there is no harm in choosing it as a profession.

“Didi, can you let me shadow you, I will learn photography and videography in the process.” I was delighted to hear this. We have a line of VSSM’s second-generation shaping to take up their role as change-makers. Our Dimpleben takes utmost care in raising the children at our hostels as responsible and well-rounded individuals. And the entire education team of VSSM, including Vanita, Bijol, Pravin, match her enthusiasm. VSSM is indeed lucky to have such dedicated team members. We are also grateful for the support we receive from our well-wishing donors, who fuel our efforts to educate children from some of the most marginalised sections of our society.

એવું કહેનાર અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા વિશાલે મારા જન્મદિવસે સરસ વિડીયો એડીટ કરીને મને મોકલ્યો જેના શબ્દો હતા, મેરી મા કે બરાબર કોઈ નહીં... જે સાંભળીને ધન્યતા અનુભવાય.. ને ભગવાનને એણે આપેલા આ સુખ માટે બસ આભાર જ કહેવાય. 

વિશાલનો જન્મ ગુજરાત રાજસ્થાનના બોર્ડર પરના કોઈ ગામમાં થયો. પણ એ સમજણો થાય મા ને ઓળખતો થાય એ પહેલાં જ એની મા આ દુનિયા છોડી ગઈ. છાપરાંમાં રહેતા આ પરિવારનો પીછો દરિદ્રતાએ ક્યારેય છોડ્યો નહોતો ત્યાં વિશાલના પિતાના માથે ચાર બાળકોની જવાબદારી આવી પડી. જેમ તેમ એ બાળકોને મોટા કરવા કોશીશ કરે. 

વિશાલ અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં પાંચમાં ધોરણમાં હતો ત્યારે ભણવા આવ્યો. એ કહે, 'દીદી હોસ્ટેલમાં શરૃઆતમાં બીલકુલ જ ન ગમે. પણ અહીંયા સૌથી સારુ હતું સવારે દૂધ અને નાસ્તો, બપોર અને સાંજનું જમવાનું મળતું તે. બાકી ઘરે તો સવારે ચા ક્યારેક ક્યારેક મળે બપોરો કર્યાનું તો યાદેય નથી. હા સાંજે એક ટંક જમવાનું બનતું. અભાવ ને ભૂખ સતત વેઠેલી. ત્યારે હોસ્ટેલમાં એ બધી શાંતિ હતી.છતાં ફાવતુ નહોતું'

પણ ધીમે ધીમે વિશાલ અમારા બાલદોસ્તોનો હેવાયો થયો. શિક્ષણના મહત્વને સમજ્યો ને પછી તો શું ચોટી બાંધી બેસી ગયો ભણવા. એ કહે, 'તમે ડીમ્પલદીદી, વનીતાદીદી, બીજોલભાઈ, પ્રવિણભાઈ, જયભાઈ વિજાયભાઈ બધા એક જ વાત કરો, ભણો ભણ્યા વગર જીવન નથી.. અને બીજી બધી ચિંતા મારા માથે છોડી દો. બસ પછી તો શું દોડવું તો ને ઢાળ મળ્યો. મારા મોટાભાઈએ પણ મને પ્રોત્સાહીત કર્યો' 

હાલ વિશાલ અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ધો.12માં ભણે. એને ફોટોગ્રાફી, વિડીયોગ્રાફી ખુબ ગમે. પણ એમાં ઝાઝા પૈસા ન મળે તો એટલે નર્સીગનો કોર્સ કરીશ એવું એ કહે. . જો કે અમે કહ્યું, ફોટોગ્રાફી, વિડીયો ગ્રાફીમાંય ઘણા પૈસા મળે.. એટલે એ ફીલ્ડમાં આગળ વધવામાં વાંધો નથી..

ત્યારે વિશાલે કહ્યું, 'દીદી મને તમારી સાથે રાખો ને? વિડીયોગ્રાફી ને ફોટોગ્રાફી મને શીખવાડો હું આપણું કામ કરીશ...' 

એની આ વાત સાંભળીને રાજી જ થવાયું.. અમારી બીજી પેઢી તૈયાર થઈ રહી છે જે vssm ને આગળ સંભાળવાની છે..

અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા આ બધા બાળકોને કેળવવાનું એમનું ધ્યાન રાખવાનું અમારા ડીમ્પલબેન ખુબ ચીવટથી કરે ને એમને સાથ આપે વનીતા, બીજોલ, પ્રવિણ ટૂંકમાં આખી ટીમ... આવી સરસ ટીમ મળ્યાનો આનંદ છે..

વળી આ કાર્યો કરી શકાયે છીએ સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજનોની મદદના   લીધે.. તમારી સતત મળતી મદદ માટે આભારી છું.

 “Didi, please don’t take Urmiladidi and Kailashdidi from here!”

“Why?”

“We will not like without them. Can’t you let them be here?”

“But they have to study further, they will have to leave.”

“Please don’t do that!!”

Little Bharti and Kokila had been arguing with me for letting Urmila and Kailash stay at Kankar Hostel. VSSM has just began operating the Hostel at Kakar settlement it has built for the children of Vadi community.  The Vadi community continues to migrate for work as a result the education of their children is compromised as children do get enrolled but cannot continue with the school because they need to tag their parents. The hostel allows the parents to keep their children with us while they continuously  wander for work.

Urmila and Kailash have been studying with VSSM operated hostel at Ahmedabad. They finished their 12th grade recently.  Very soon they will be joining the Nursing College at Goraj near Baroda. Shri Piyushbhai (Jewelex Foundation) has helped us with their fees.

Since there was some time in between (the college begins in January) Dimpleben arranged for the girls to volunteer at the newly set up Kakar hostel.  During their tenure at Kakar hostel both the girls bonded so well with the little ones at Kakar that it was difficult to bid adieu now that their college begins. Children at Kakar learnt that Urmila-Kailash were to leave hence they started persuading me to let the duo stay at Kakar. Kokila and Bharti led the chorus. “Didi, we had so much fun with all of them that we will want to spend all or vacations with these children,” Kailash-Urmila tell me.

The children at VSSM operated hostels are raised to imbibe the ethos of the phrase Vasudhaiv Kutumbkam (the world is one family), the reason these children shower so much affection on each other.

Well, I could not obey Bharti and Kokila’s request but did promise Kailash and Urmila to bring them at Kakar during their vacations.

Such episodes make you believe that  world could definitely be a glorious place if each of us showered such affection on the other. 

'દીદી તમે ઊર્મીલાદીદી અને કૈલાશદીદીને અહીંયાથી લઈ નહીં જાવ ને?'

'કેમ?'

'અમને એમના વગર ના હોરવે.. તમે એમને અહીંયા જ રાખો ને?'

'પણ એ બેઉને તો આગળ ભણવાનું છે તો જવું તો પડશે..'

'ના એમ ના કરો...'

મારી સાથે ઊર્મીલા ને કૈલાશને ન લઈ જવા દલીલ કરી રહી હતી નાનકડી ટબુડિયો ભારતી અને કોકીલા..

બનાસકાંઠાના કાકરમાં અમે ફુલવાદી વસાહતમાં એમના બાળકો ભણી શકે તે માટે હોસ્ટેલ શરૃ કરી. મૂળ મા-બાપ કામ ધંધા માટે ઘણું વિચરણ કરે ને બાળકોને પણ સાથે લઈ જાય. એટલે બાળકોનું ભણવાનું બગડે તે હોસ્ટેલ હોય તો બાળકોને મુકીને જઈ શકે માટે.

ઊર્મીલા અને કોકિલા અમદાવાદમાં ચાલતી અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં રહીને ધો.12 ભણી. આ બેઉને નર્સીગ ભણવું હતું તે વડોદરાના ગોરજમાં આવેલી નર્સીગ કોલેજમાં એમને પ્રવેશ મળ્યો. બેઉની ફી ભરવામાં અમને આદરણીય પિયુષભાઈ જવેલેક્ષ ફાઉન્ડેશને મદદ કરી. 

આ બે દીકરીઓની કોલેજ જાન્યુઆરીથી શરૃ થવાની. તે બેઉને કાકરમાં શરૃ કરેલી અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં મહિનો સેવા આપવા જવાનું અમારા ડીમ્પલબેને ગોઠવ્યું. 

કૈલાશ અને ઊર્મીલા કાકર ગયા ને બાળકો ભેગા એવા હળી મળી ગયા કે હવે બેઉની કોલેજ શરૃ થવાનો ને કાકરથી વિદાય લેવાનો વખત થયો.. 

હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા બાળકોને આ ખબર પડી એટલે આ બેઉને નહીં લઈ જાવની ભલામણ શરૃ થઈ.

કોકીલા ને ભારતી એ માટે પહેલ કરી ને પછી હોસ્ટેલની બધી ટાબરે પણ ન લઈ જાવનું રટણ...

કૈલાશ ને ઊર્મીલાને પણ આ બાળકો સાથે મજા પડી એમણે કહ્યું, દીદી દરેક વેકેશનમાં હવે અમે આ બાળકો પાસે જ આવીશું. 

અમારા ત્યાં ભણતા બાળકોને અમે સમગ્ર વિશ્વ એક કુટુંબની ભાવના શીખવીએ.. એટલે જ આ બાળકો એકબીજા પ્રત્યે આટલું હેત રાખી શકે. 

પણ આવું હેત સૌ એકબીજા પર વર્ષાવે તો દુનિયા કેવી મજાની થઈ જાય નહીં?

ફોટોમાં કોકીલા અને ભારતી જે દીદીને ન લઈ જવા કહી રહી છે તે મારી પાછળ.. ને હોસ્ટેલના એ હોલની બહાર નીકળીને  તો બધા એકદમ ઘેરી વળીને ન લઈ જવાની વાત ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય...

Mittal Patel meets Meera and Chetan

Meera and Chetan are residents of Surendranagar’s Dudhrej, a town that has large settlements nomadic and de-notified communities. Most children of these communities do not go to school, reason being the highway that passes from between the school and settlement. There is a looming fear of accidents while crossing the highway. The parents resent sending their children to school. VSSM had appealed to the concerned authorities for sanctioning a school at the settlement.  Our team member, Harshadbhai remained persistent in following up the appeal. Consequently, we had school at up till 8th grade at the settlement.

When at the settlement recently, I happen to meet Meera and Chetan.  I am very fond of Madhu, Meera’s mother. Chetan’s father Kishanbhai is an expert flute player. He too is dear to us. We never had to tell these parents to educate their children.

“Didi, we have finished studies upto 8th grade, we do not have a high school here. I want to study further, take me with you please!” Chetan tells me. Meera too joins in. I have decided to bring both of them to our hostel in June 2022.

It has been our dream to help children like Meera and Chetan realise their dream. Our very dear and respected Shri Chandrakant Gogri has given us land In Pansar near Gandhinagar to build an institute to educate 1000 such children. Very soon we shall be commencing the construction of Vallabh Vidya Vihar, an all-inclusive enclave for educational and vocational training of children from marginalised communities of Gujarat.  It will help us live our pledge of providing life skills and raise responsible citizens of tomorrow.

મીરા અને ચેતન સુરેન્દ્રનગરના દૂધરેજમાં રહે. 

દૂધરેજમાં વિચરતી જાતિઓની વસતિ ઘણી. બાળકોય ઘણા પણ નિશાળમાં જવાનું ખાસ કરે નહીં. મૂળ ગામની નિશાળ ને વસાહતની વચમાં ધ્રાંગધ્રા હાઈવે આવે. તે મા-બાપને અકસ્માતનો ભય લાગ્યા કરે. 

અમે આ પરિવારો જ્યાં રહેતા ત્યાં જ નિશાળ બનાવી આપવા સરકારમાં રજૂઆત કરી. અમારો હર્ષદ એ માટે સતત મથે. આખરે નિશાળ થઈ. ધો.8 સુધી બાળકો ત્યાં ભણે..

હમણાં વસાહતમાં જવાનું થયું તે વેળા મીરા અને ચેતન મળ્યા. મીરાની મા મધુ મને પ્રિય ને ચેતનનો બાપ કિશન અચ્છો વાંસળી કલાકાર. એય પ્રિય. બાળકોને ભણાવજો એવું અમારે આ બેયના મા-બાપને કહેવું ન પડે.

ચેતને કહ્યું, દીદી આઠ ધો. પાસ થઈ ગયો હવે અહીંયા નિશાળ નથી મને તમારી સાથે આવવું છે તો મીરાએ પણ કહ્યું, મને પણ લઈ જાવ ને...

જૂન 2022માં બેઉને અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં લઈ આવવાનું નક્કી....

ગાંધીનગર પાસેના પાનસરમાં આવા 1000 થી વધુ બાળકોને રાખીને ભણાવી શકાય તે માટે અમારા ખુબ જ આદરણીય અને પ્રિય ચંદ્રકાન્તભાઈ ગોગરીએ જમીન લઈ આપી છે. આવનારા દિવસોમાં ત્યાં વલ્લભ વિદ્યા વિહાર ઊભુ થશે જ્યાં બાળકો વિવિધ વ્યવસાયલક્ષી તાલીમ સાથે શિક્ષણ મેળવશે ને દેશના અચ્છા નાગરિક બનશે... 

જીવનલક્ષી શિક્ષણ આપવાની અમારી નેમ...

“Didi, may we come in?”

5 students from our hostel who now pursue Engineering Diploma came to see me in my office. 

All these students have been studying with VSSM’s hostels from when it functioned at Dodiya, Surendranagar and Radhanpur in Patan. And when the hostel at Ahmedabad was up and running, these boarders along with others also moved to Ahmedabad. 

The community these students belonged, marries off their children early, the responsibility to earn living falls on their shoulders early hence, it is pertinent for the children to begin earning early in life. This was the reason VSSM’s Dimpleben decided to enrol them in Diploma in Engineering program at Ganapat University. Sachin and Mahesh pursued Diploma in Automobile Engineering, Rohit and Raveen did Diploma in Electrical Engineering while Jeevan enrolled in ITI Mechanical program. All of them are in the second year of their program. Initially, it was challenging to comprehend the studies in English, but our Education team members Vanita, Bijol led by Dimpleben, provided the support and encouragement they required to carry on. Eventually, their continued efforts paid off as the students settled well with the curriculum. 

“We have come to seek your blessings as we appear for standard 12th exam as external students.” All five spoke together. 

“Our blessings are always with you, will you be taking up a job on finishing the Diploma or?”

“We wish to enrol for the degree program.” quick came their collective response. 

“Will your families allow? And marriage…?”

“Didi, I am married!” one of them spoke before I could finish my sentence. “But we have told my family not to bring the wife home until I finish my studies.”

“I am engaged,” said another. “We get married when our elder sister or brother is getting married. This way our families are spared from double expenses. But do not worry, I will first finish my studies.”

“Are you all firm on your decision?”

“Absolutely.”

“After seeing us doing good, other students from our village also want to come and study here.”

“That is wonderful. But if the boys will study and the girls aren’t allowed to, the balance will get skewed. Ensure that girls of your community are also encouraged to study.”

Everyone affirmed. 

“I appreciate you want to pursue further education, but what will you do with a degree in Arts?”

“Didi, we want to study as much as we can. It is good that we study, right?”

And I am glad the children from such marginalised communities are not hungry for receiving education. After talking to me, all of them requested a picture together. 

We are grateful to all of you for enabling us to support the education of these children. Your assistance has certainly provided them with a better tomorrow.

'દીદી આવીએ...' અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ધો.10 ભણીને હવે ડીપ્લોમાં એન્જીન્યરીંગ ભણી રહેલા પાંચ વિદ્યાર્થીઓ મારી ઓફીસમાં આવ્યા..

આમ તો આ પાંચેય ટાબર હતા ત્યારથી અમારી હોસ્ટેલ જે પહેલાં સુરેન્દ્રનગરના ડોળિયામાં અને પાટણના #રાધનપુરમાં ચાલતી એમાં ભણતા. એ પછી અમદાવાદમાં સદવિચાર પરિવારના કેમ્પસમાં હોસ્ટેલ તબદીલ કરી ને આ બાળકોની સાથે અન્ય બાળકો પણ અમદાવાદ આવ્યા.

આ પાંચેય જે સમાજમાંથી આવે એમાં લગ્ન વહેલાં થઈ જાય ને પરિવારની જવાબદારી પણ વહેલાં આવે. આવામાં બાળકો ઝડપથી પગભર થાય તે જરૃરી. 

એટલે જ ધો.10 પાસ કર્યા પછી પાંચેયને #ગણપત_યુનિવર્સીટીમાં ચાલતા ડિપ્લોમાં કોર્સ જેમાં સચીન અને મહેશને ઓટોમોબાઈલ, રોહીત અને રવીને ઈલેક્ટ્રીકલમાં તો જીવણને આ.ટી.આઈ.મીકેનીકલમાં પ્રવેશ અપાવ્યો. 

એક વર્ષ આ પાંચેયે પૂર્ણ કર્યું હવે બીજા વર્ષમાં આવ્યા. પહેલાં અંગ્રેજીમાં ભણવાનું થોડું કપરુ લાગતું. પણ અમારી ટીમના ડિમ્પલબેન, વનીતા, બીજોલ સતત તેમને જુસ્સો પુરો પાડે. એમના સતત પ્રયત્નોથી જ આ બાળકો ત્યાં ટક્યા ને હવે તો ફાવી ગયું. 

'ધો.12ની પરિક્ષા એક્સટર્નલ તરીકે આપવા આવ્યા છીએ દીદી.. આશિર્વાદ આપો' એવું પાંચેય કહ્યું.. 'આશિર્વાદ તો હંમેશાં.. પણ ડિપ્લોમા પૂર્ણ કર્યા પછી નોકરીએ લાગી જશો કે?'

'અમારી ઈચ્છા ડિગ્રી કરવાની છે..' 'ઘરવાળા કરવા દેશે.. લગ્ન...'

હજુ વાક્ય પૂર્ણ થાય એ પહેલાં જ પાંચેમાંથી એકે કહ્યું, 'મારા થઈ ગયા દીદી.. પણ મે ઘરવાળાને કહી દીધું કે, ભણવાનું ન પતે ત્યાં સુધી એને તેડી લાવવાની નહીં.. '

તો બીજાએ કહ્યું, 'મારી સગાઈ થઈ ગઈ દીદી.. અમારામાં મોટાભાઈ કે બહેનનું કરે ભેગા ભેગું નાનાનુંયે ગોઠવી દે... પણ ચિંતા ન કરો ભણવાનું નહીં બગાડીએ...'

'મક્કમ છો?''એકદમ દીદી...'

'અમને જોઈને હવે આપણી હોસ્ટેલમાં અમારા ગામથી બીજા છોકરાં પણ ભણવા આવવાના છે... '

'બહુ સરસ.. પણ બધા છોકરાં ભણી જશે ને દીકરીઓ નહીં ભણે તો બેલેન્સ બગડી જશે માટે દીકરીઓને પણ ભણવા આવવા પ્રોત્સાહીત કરજો... 'બધાએ એક સૂરે હા કહી...

'ડીગ્રી કરવી છે તો ધો.12 આર્ટસની ડીગ્રી લઈને શું કરશો?' 

'દીદી જેટલું ભણાય એટલું ભણવાનું.. ભણીએ એ તો સારુ કહેવાય ને?'

ચાલો ભણતરની હોંશ થઈ એનો રાજીપો... એ પછી પાંચેય પરિક્ષા આપવા ગયા.. એ પહેલાં દીદી એક ફોટો.. જે પાડ્યો ને અહીંયા વહેંચ્યો... 

આ બાળકોના ભણતરમાં શરૃઆતથી આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન અમારા ચંદ્રકાન્તભાઈ ગોગરી મદદ કરે.. સાથે અન્ય પ્રિયજનો પણ ખરા આપ સૌ પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર.. એમની મદદથી બાળકો ઉજ્જવળ ભવિષ્યને પામશે.
